The owner of a shop in Zurich where US talk show host Oprah Winfrey says she encountered racism has called the incident a "misunderstanding".
Winfrey, one of the world's richest women, claimed an assistant refused to serve her in an upmarket handbag shop.
She was apparently told one of the bags on display was "too expensive" for her.
Shop owner Trudie Gotz told the BBC that Winfrey was "absolutely allowed" to look at the $35,000 (£22,500) bag, which was kept behind a screen.
"My salesperson wanted to give her the handbag in her hand. But she didn't want to take the bag," claimed Gotz.
She said her assistant had worked in the Trois Pommes store "for a few years and takes care of the most spoilt customers from all over the world", adding, "she is really a correct sales person".
Winfrey, who stars in Lee Daniels' new film The Butler, visited Zurich last month to attend singer Tina Turner's wedding. Her programme The Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Switzerland.
Speaking to US TV show Entertainment Tonight, she said: "I go into a store and I say to the woman, 'Excuse me, may I see the bag right above your head?' and she says to me, 'No. It's too expensive.'"

She used to go thru these fat/thin cycles and pimp various diet deals.
I guess now she’s just gonna be Blowprah all the time....
‘Winfrey, one of the world’s richest women ‘
What did they say about Palin? Something about lipstick on a ...?
The problem is seeing everything as racist, and not admitting that the problems lie within themselves.
I see The Oprah has now gone over to the Michelle Obama diet. In no time at all, Oprah’s booty call will expand to U.S. Standard Rail Gage of 4 feet, 8.5 inches! What a porker.
She’s become such a bore. This is her second complaint about “racism” in Europe. Maybe she needs to stay home the next time she takes a vacation.
something tells me a store that sells $35K handbags probably has security camera’s all over the place...would love to see a video of the sales person handing her the bag...
When I heard the cow compare Saint Skittles to Emmett Till, she needed to be slapped upside her head.
Hey, I’ve had it happen to me and I’m white (and I wouldn’t pay that much for a handbag if I could afford it.)
“Maybe she needs to stay home the next time she takes a vacation.”
Nope—she needs to move to africa where she can plant permanent “roots”.
This woman is so concerned about the poor. Yet she considers buying a $35,000 handbag. Like Jesse Jackson Jr.’s $45,000 rolex. These frauds spend more lavishly than anyone with common sense and yet get away with portraying themselves as humanitarians. She also limits she stays at her home in California in order to avoid taxes.
It was not racism. The salesperson obviously didn’t recognize Oprah. Oprah should be aware that for 999 out of 1,000 customers (if not more), $35,000 would be more than they’d want to pay for a hand bag. The clerk have said the same thing to a white customer.
Maybe Oprah looked hungry and they were afraid she was going to eat it.
The clearest sign that someone is a racist is when they claim everything bad that happens to them is the result of race.
Yep, the billionaire has renewed her victim card.
I’m not sure I believe Oprah’s version of the event. I figure she just wants to get her name in the news to promote “The Butler”.
It seems so fashionable to claim racism these days.. Homophobia seems to be taking a back seat to it...
But I guess Oprah took that to a whole new level.
Hey oprah, go to Africa and walk down the street of any major city at midnight. You probably will not encounter any racism, but you will wish to God that was the least of your worries.
And don’t get her started on how hard it is to get good help these days.
In 1994 I stopped in at an expensive, local men’s store to buy my husband a tie and some dress gloves. I was well dressed and well groomed, having just come from work — suit, heels, etc.
The manager of the shop followed me out after I did not find what I wanted, and I caught him peeking out the window to see what kind of car I was driving. Too bad. It was just a top of the line 1994 Chrysler — the prettiest car I’ve ever owned and spiffy for its day. But it wasn’t a BMW, or a Mercedes.
If Oprah read the foregoing, do you think that she’d holler “racism”? What if she knew that I am of Swedish and English descent — blonde and blue eyed? What would she holler then?
I subscribe to Forbes magazine, it's full of ads for watches @ $100K and upward. Most don't even list the prices, you have to go to their web sites to find that out and if you need to know what the price is, you probably can't afford it anyway.
Even if I were a multi gazillionaire I wouldn't pay that much for a watch.
And “millions of lynchings.”
Dress gloves? You mean like dressy gloves you were outside to keep your hands warm?
Oh yes, critics already calling her performance Oscar-worthy. Okra will do everything in her power to promote herself and racism is just so easy.
The past couple weeks have been an Oprah blitz. She’s only after the publicity.
How many third world schools could she build for the cost of that purse? I don’t believe in buying a purse for more than how much money will be put in it. Last purse I bought was at a yard sale for $2. Great purse with lots of zippered pockets. Has lasted for years. Well spent $2 and I was able to pay the electric bill.
Dress gloves for my husband to wear with an overcoat to the symphony as opposed to work gloves donned to change a tire in the snow.
It’s so hard to be victimized when you are a billionaire.
Right - her wealth was never mentioned during the last presidential election but Romney’s measly 250 million was brought up time and time again.
If she’s looking at a $35,000 purse (which would far exceed any personal effects purchases while on vacation), I wonder how much he wedding gift for Tina Turner cost.
And if Tina got remarried, will she stop using the last name of the ex-husband (now deceased) who she claimed was so violent (yet gave her free reign to do to his name in her film however she wanted)?
Time to stop playing the “Turner” card.
The movie, ‘42’ was ostensibly about racism. It was supposed to raise awareness of how the civil rights struggle is the same as homosexual struggles
Don’t know how Mr. Robinson would see it. He’s passed on. His estate handlers probably thought it is fine.
Movie was terrible. Fell flat
This is the same?
The best they can do is shop at a $30g handbag store for publicity?
Joan Rivers pointed out a celeb sporting a crocodile handbag on fashion police. $25,000 or something. Joan’s witty daughter commented, ‘geeze, for $25g she could get a live crocodile and train it to carry her stuff’
I went into a local Belks one special sales weekend intending to buy a bag..
the saleswoman in the bag dept told me I would be more comfortable visiting a cheap stall out in the mall...
I was dressed in Jeans TShirt and sneakers...my usual everyday uniform..
I started to laugh at her as I had ample money and credit cards in my old bag and then decided to get indignant and “offended” and told her in my best well bred, well educated, highly toffed, upper class British accented voice that her manager needed to know she was running good customers with money to spend off and that I would never allow “her kind” to serve me and left her standing there with her stupid mouth opened...
I didnt know I was suppose to call Oprah...
HELP !! Oprah !!!
“I guess now shes just gonna be Blowprah all the time....”
I have heard that she was stopped recently somewhere by the TSA for carrying 50 # of “crack!”
“Hey, Ive had it happen to me and Im white (and I wouldnt pay that much for a handbag if I could afford it.)”
Its happened to this white guy at the dollar store! ;-)
“This woman is so concerned about the poor. Yet she considers buying a $35,000 handbag. Like Jesse Jackson Jr.s $45,000 rolex. These frauds spend more lavishly than anyone with common sense and yet get away with portraying themselves as humanitarians.”
Hmm, keep in mind that it is a matter of perspective. I wouldn’t consider Oprah’s purchase of a $35K handbak as any more extravagant than my purchasing a $10 wallet. I’d be that the percentage of net worth is about the same. I’m sure that plenty of “commoners” make a living off the “extravagancies” of the wealthy.
“She also limits she stays at her home in California in order to avoid taxes.”
Here is where you hit the real problem. Hypocricy is much different than extravagency....
BTW From there I went to the Belks in Chattanooga as I had bought a special charity card for the sale at my church and didnt want to waste it..
I found a great Ann Klein bag...
Surely you know about this in Minnesota!
I also subscribe to Forbes. It’s amazing some of the phone calls I’ve gotten selling bizarrely expensive stuff. I think that a high percentage of their subscribers have a net worth of millions of dollars - not me. They were disappointed... :-)
As for magazines, I was amazed at the selection in my attorney’s office lobby... I never knew they existed - ads for vacations on private islands, etc. How the other half lives!
Maybe it happened the way she says, maybe it didn't.
Are her ratings hurting? Is she trying to pump up her cred/image, maybe to promote her upcoming project?
We do real racism that we can relate to here in flyover country, black on black, black on white, even the GuvCo sanctioned and approved stuff, but not the fluffy high dollar, Life of the Rich and Famous "racism" she is offended by.
We do better ignoring and forgiving such trespasses against us, rather than intensely focusing on "it" and making it a life's priority or even an obsession.
Good lord, lady, you're a rich, fabulously successful and famous black woman in/from America! But...you're not exactly sin-free either, girl.
Be thankful and teach gratitude and forgiveness instead of your race hating the trespasser.
The race focused, race hatred examples are making things WORSE for all of us when they become the way we see each other.
That’s why I rarely go to the Symphony here in Florida. It’s just too darn hot for the get up.
When you have a CHIP ON YOUR SHOULDER, like many blacks, you take any slight as RACISM. Even when it was not even close. Two people are waiting for a cab. One black one white. The cab can only pick up one person. The cab picks the white, the black thinks it was racism. Total BS
Two things about class.
Money doesn’t buy it.
It doesn’t rub off.
i do not mind if wealthy people want to spend their money on what i consider frivolous... to me it does not take away from their giving... if they only spend on thenselves and are not generous with the needy, that is their right, but it is greedy... certainly lacking in charity—the greatest of all... rich or poor or in between, we are called to be charitable... i think she is... i could be wrong... i do not know the ins and outs of her life... so i don’t think i can judge her unbiasedly.... to me it is smart to avoid taxes when you can... although i understand she can come across as hypocritical...
Remember when the media would attack a celebrity for spending $35,000 on a PURSE?
Since they aren’t attacking Oprah for such frivolous spending, can it be said they are RACIST?
very true... but it does seem that FReepers for the most part are not open to racism existing at all... like there is no legitimate claim... it does exist, on every side... against all 3 races... all over the world...
She has a movie coming out, just like Jim Carrey last month and every liberal Hollywood freak before. They want attention, free press, it’s a pattern. If there is a script they are interested in, they go off the rails with some liberal public outburst, hoping for attention from a Hollywood God.
Home won't help. How about Zimbabwe or Kenya. Can't be any racism there.
