The Florida Sheriffs Association is no longer neutral on the state's controversial "stand your ground" law.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, the new president of the association, announced Friday that members agreed earlier this week without opposition to support the law "as currently written."
"Our current judicial system is comprised of multiple checks and balances to ensure fair and equitable application of all laws, including stand your ground,'" Judd said in a prepared statement.
When the National Rifle Association-backed law was approved in 2005, the association remained neutral on the issue.
Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach Republican who supports "stand your ground" and whose subcommittee will hold a hearing on the law, called it enlightening that a group that "has traditionally been tepid" on the law now "recognizes its value."

They will make this into a racist thing because so many news outlets have erroneously called the Zimmerman trail a “Stand Your Ground Trial”.
If the memo had not gotten stuck in the printer, it would be out by now.
What a shame that the true racists have constantly tried to blend SYG into the GZ trial and acquittal. AFAIK, SYG was never mentioned during the trial. SYG had nothing to do with the altercation between Traydemark and George.
Sheriff Judd is an honorable servant to Polk County. He keeps our county safe and is a firm backer of the 2nd amendment. To be quite honest, we should do away with the Lakeland Police for (scandalicious) and put Grady in charge.
Some places are doing that for budgetary reasons.
There are 67 counties in Florida. Sounds like a winner.
At a local 912 meeting Sheriff Judd was the keynote speaker. During the question/answer period, I asked him about our county’s violent crime rate. (I was front row near center). He told me to my face that Florida is at a 30 year low on violent crime and Polk county is at a 40 year low, the second lowest since the started keeping stats. An armed society is a polite society.
Good news for Florida, and an example to Sheriffs in other states who maybe wavering.
