Obama: Vladimir Putin is stuck in the Cold War
The Washington Examiner ^ | August 9, 2013 | Joel Gehrke

Russian President Vladimir Putin tends to think of the U.S.-Russia relationship in Cold War terms, according to President Obama, adding that the two leaders have a good personal relationship despite Putin’s bad body language when they’re together.

Obama said Putin has increased tensions between the United States and Russia since he returned to the presidency. “We saw more rhetoric on the Russian side that was anti-american [and] played into the old stereotypes about the Cold War,” Obama told reporters during a press conference.

“I’ve encouraged Mr. Putin to think forward as opposed to backward on those issues, with mixed success,” he said.

Obama knocked Putin about the Cold War during his interview with NBC’s Jay Leno on Monday.

“Well, he headed up the KGB,” Obama recalled while joking about dealing with Putin.

Obama added that he and Putin have a good personal relationship, notwithstanding that “he’s got that kind of slouch, looking like the bored kid in the back of the classroom” when they meet.

Interesting Barry. Tell us, when exactly was Putin head of the KGB? We are being lead by an idiot who makes an ass of himself every time he speaks.

Todays Gems, the Russian Olympic team won’t be competitive unless the athletes include homosexuals, that this issue is worth cancelling a summit for, and that Putin was a slouchy lazy looking bored student.

Way to go zippy.

No kidding. Ex cold-war submariner here. I recall a time when the US President loved Jesus, suspected Moslems were up to no good, believed marriage was between men and women, and thought America was an exceptional Christian nation.

Total role reversal between President Putin and “pResident” Obama.

Ah, yes. The essence of polished diplomacy and statesmanship: ridiculing another international leader with whom you either a.) hope to do business or b.) may have to do business...on a sensitive subject.

Only "The Smartest President In History" could get away with such indulgent and irresponsible behavior.

George W. Bush simply wasn't smart enough to pull a stunt like this...

Putin never "headed up" the KGB, he was a lieutenant colonel. That was one of the funny things about that remark by Obastard. But you are closer to the mark than Obastard, because he did run a large part of the KGB.

‘’Putin recognizes Obama for the vile, incompetent fool that he is’’.<< It isn’t only that. It’s because Obama is(ostensibly) black. Russians are some of the most virulently racist people on Earth. Growing up in the old Soviet Union Putin never had any contact with blacks, there weren’t any to interact with. What most Russians saw of blacks was video propaganda culled from US sources . Seeing blacks ransack stores during any one number of riots and cherry-picked scenes other blacks being set upon by the dogs and fire hoses of Democrats(ironically) like Eugene “Bull’’ O’Connor. To Russians you’re either ‘’Russian’’(white) or you’re not.

AFAIK, in 1977-1984 he was a counter-intelligence agent working in Leningrad to catch CIA operatives. In 1985-1989 he held some low position at KGB station in Dresden, Germany (probably as important for a Soviets as a CIA station in some remote Mexican or Canadian town). After German reunification in 1989 he had a desk job in Moscow KGB office but resigned in 1991, a day the old KGB officers started their communist coup against Gorbachev government.

There were about 20,000 African students studying in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. It is very likely that Putin as an officer of KGB did in fact have contact with the Africans, and might have even taken part in some “education” programs for them. As for the supposed “virulent racism” of the Russians, the 20th century idea of “racism” may be a Soviet invention (Leon Trotsky is often credited) in its ideological war with the West, it is itself fiction like global warming. While considered a bigger crime than murder in this country and a sin bigger than any against the 10 Commandments, it does not exist, except in people’s brainwashed Kumbaya minds. Look up “ethnocentrism”. All peoples in all countries in the entire history of human culture have been wary of strangers, outsiders, regardless of their skin shade. Enough of this “racism” nonsense.

Yes, communist propaganda contributed a lot to shift racism from cultural to political category.

It was another good tool in class warfare.

The contrast between Russia and the West is not as great as it was 20 years ago. The Russians are traveling abroad more, and there are a lot more western goods here. I'd say that 10 years ago it was still easy to identify a Westerner on the street by the clothes they wore. It's not really possible today.

I live in the south of Russia, not too far from Sochi. It's one of the wealthier regions. It's difficult to tell that there are economic problems, as there are construction projects everywhere you look.

I've never felt threatened because I was an American, and most of the time there is excitement when people discover that I'm from the USA. I can walk the streets at night without fear. I couldn't do the same back in the US.

What has surprised me the most is the similarity of attitudes between Russians and Americans. Most people are just trying to make it through life, and make their children's lives better than their own, etc. The average person doesn't sit around and dream of world domination...

In short, I like it here, and there are other foreigners who have come and decided to stay.

When growing up prior to becoming a KGB officer Vlad didn’t have blacks sitting next to him class. You can go on line and find a number of sites and videos showing Russians beating the crap put of people from Khazakstan, Vietnam, anyone number of people from Africa who have gone to universities in Russia. A good number of them are for the most part just thugs(’’hooligans’’) as they were called in the old USSR) who don’t want foreigners in their country because ‘they’re taking jobs from Russians’’ . Others are the private armies if you will of quite a number of Russians in their parliament(”Duma’) who call themselves ‘’sports clubs’’. And when these ‘’sport clubs ‘’ aren’t beating up the other guys ‘’sport clubs’’ they’re kicking the living day lights out of foreigners all over Moscow and other large cities. I’ve seen the videos and they’re tough to watch. Four or five big Russian guys, sometimes more, anywhere from eighteen to thirty five years old attacking foreigners on subways, in the street and filming it. Students from other countries are told to stay in their dorms for the most part and if they have to go out they’re advised not to go anywhere alone. I saw one video of three Russians punks waiting outside of a campus dormitory and grab a Hispanic looking guy and just start wailing away on the guy till he was pretty much begging for his life. They went through his pockets and got a hold of his identity card or visa of some kind and rip it up. One of the punks
is talking to his buddy who is filming the whole thing and he appears to be telling who will ever be watching the video that without that identity card the poor guy is basically screwed and has to go through a big hassle to get a new one. And the general attitude to all this from the Russians themselves is ‘’If they didn’t come here this wouldn’t happen to them’’.

Some smaller Russian cities like Voronezh has a significant black population made out of thousands of college and univercity dropouts who aren’t about to get back to their home nations. Most of them aren’t working making welfare queens, drug dealers and violent criminals.

I was in Russia in the mid-90s for a short visit. I thought one thing Americans and Russians had in common was a sense of humor. Russia was definitely a weird place at that time, but average Russians dealt with it with jokes.

I think we need to remember that a lot of Americans have Russian roots.

As to the racism, my friend who lived there said that Africans who came for military or educational reasons were commonly mocked and referred to as monkeys by the Russians. They were also very derisive of Chechens and Eskimos (whose Russian name I forget— maybe Chuckchis?).

Eskimo (or Chukcha in Russian) takes same place in Russian as a Pole in American folklore.
Russians has all the Polish jokes word by word but the Poles are replaced with Chukchas there.
As for blacks Russian racism is mostly cultural. They actually hate a concept of cultural diversity and for that reason detest people who doesn’t act (not look) like Russians themselves (it is not applied to Americans and Europeans who admired as rivals). If a minority dresses like Russian, speaks like Russian, eats like Russian one counts him as their own regardless his skin color.
You can actually see a number or Asian or Turkic Russians and the majority of population is race-blind towards them. Same about rare blacks living in smaller communities who contributes to society instead of pulling a race card. I think one of rural towns in Moscow region has an elected black mayor. He is not even a natural born Russian but somehow earned their respect.

I was born in 1950. During my entire adolescent and early adult life, Russia was the Cold War enemy. China was a murmur of a possible troublesome future but not much worry; Islam was the unknown ultimate danger to world peace - no one here had a clue it seems.

Today, my former America is the Russia of then. A complete reversal. The Politburo has become the US Senate, those Russian Dachas are now Washing DC/Virginia upscale homes/condos for them - some have places in the Bahamas, etc..

We have A dictator avidly aided by a rabidly loyal cadre of henchmen protects our Premier, with the help of American Pravda.

Beneath it all, unseen by entitlement Americans, American Pravda, and all politicians but the loyal elite to the Premier, lurks Islam - the final menace.

I too grew up during the Cold War and considered the USSR to be my enemy. When the USSR collapsed, I found myself with the opportunity to work in “that part of the world.”

It was a interesting time. Most of the people we associated during that time were the interpreters who worked with us on the project. After work, we’d sit around and talk about things, including the Cold War. Turns out that their fear was the the “bloodthirsty” Americans were just waiting for the right moment to drop the bomb on them. Just about everyone I met genuinely liked America and wanted to visit this “magical country.”

What kind of idiot is letting him say this stuff about the Russian president....he is a bored kid, he is stuck in the cold war....

Seriously, in diplomatic speech this is unprecedented and childish unless he was trashing some nasty little dictator of an insignificant country.

This will not get this childish US president Snowden, as a matter of fact it insures Russia helps Snowden but it might get him on war footing with Russia if he continues down this path....either way it will get him special ops. Russian retaliation, interference and games around the world.

Only a stupid idiot plays world politics this way.
