Reid says Obamacare just a step toward eventual single-payer system
Las Vegas Sun ^ | Sat, Aug 10, 2013 | Karoun Demirjian

In just about seven weeks, people will be able to start buying Obamacare-approved insurance plans through the new health care exchanges.

But already, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is predicting those plans, and the whole system of distributing them, will eventually be moot.

Reid said he thinks the country has to “work our way past” insurance-based health care during a Friday night appearance on Vegas PBS’ program “Nevada Week in Review.”

“What we’ve done with Obamacare is have a step in the right direction, but we’re far from having something that’s going to work forever,” Reid said.

When then asked by panelist Steve Sebelius whether he meant ultimately the country would have to have a health care system that abandoned insurance as the means of accessing it, Reid said: “Yes, yes. Absolutely, yes.”

The idea of introducing a single-payer national health care system to the United States, or even just a public option, sent lawmakers into a tizzy back in 2009, when Reid was negotiating the health care bill.

“We had a real good run at the public option … don’t think we didn’t have a tremendous number of people who wanted a single-payer system,” Reid said on the PBS program...

Reid confirms what a bunch of here on FR have been saying since day one.

The bastards in Wash DC must first be subjected to the nightmare that is called nobamacare.

Then they will welcome "single-payer" with open arms.

Then they will learn the true evil of nobama's plan.

The IRS says the lowest insurance package for a family of four will be $20,000. Dividing $20,000 insurance cost by the number of working hours in a year (2,080) gives you an hourly cost of 9.61 just for the insurance. A minimum wage employee makes 7.79/hr * 2080 hrs= $16,203 dollars. That’s less than the cost of the insurance they’d buy for a family of four. Us taxpayers are supposed to make up the difference with subsidies. This is pure insanity.

Cost of heart surgery:

USA: ~$150,000
India:~$2,500

India has a better rate of survival 30 days out - about twice as good.

My concern is that we are institutionalizing a non-sustainable system that continues to be built on crony capitalism.

A 6 week vacation in india with a surgery over there would be cheaper then $150k. But it won’t be an option if i ever suffer a heart attack due the limited time toget there. :-(

I have yet to see anyone discuss what effect this will have on those people who make their living in the healthcare insurance business.

I suppose they would just be filed under collateral damage.

This administration is 10 times lower than whale shit on the bottom of the ocean.

My gold plated Cadillac insurance cost ~20k with eye care and dental (pre tax).
At a recent meeting on the new benefits they brought an attorney! On the more interesting questions they would check with the attorney then mumble.

My 6k $ top of the line hearing aids were mostly paid for. The new plan 1500$ per ear.

0bama care provides a large plastic funnel and a thick book or rules on how not use it.

Oh! But the new plan pays for a sex change if I want one!!

Such a deal!!!

What the intention is/was...Just like Medicare....

As soon as you start working, they will be taking an insurance premium for healthcare....a percentage of your salary.

Of course, the usual welfare "bums" will pay nothing. In fact, they'll probably receive more benefits than someone who is paying....just like they do now.

Don’t worry. This is also going to get them to their so far unstated goal of a Guaranteed National Income. All production in the hands of the central planners and all equally miserly benefits doled out to those who go along.

The distinctions between workers and clients is socially unjust. We’ll all get to labor for the government and in return, the government will provide for those needs that they deem worthy at rates they decide. This is going to accelerate the practices seen in failing states and in the urban ghettos of everyone having an off the books gig to provide extra, non-taxable income. Those with no skills will simply exist on kibble in their high rise 250 sq foot cell with communal kitchen and bath.

Eventually, this will have to include the government workers themselves, but that is so far in the future, no one will even notice until it hits them broadside.

The fix is in on single payor; the fix is in on amnesty for tens of millions of illegals . . . and the GOP is complicit in it all. I really think it’s time for the tea party, libertarians and other conservatives to abandon the GOP, and stop propping up the charade of a two-party system by remaining in the GOP.

In fact, I think it was back in 2007 that Obama did an interview with NPR and stated the single payer option - socialized medicine - was goal that could be reached within ten years at the latest by way of Obamcare.

So far his plan to seize total control over one-sixth of the economy is pretty much on schedule!

Reid says Obamacare just a step toward eventual single-payer system

That may be the intent, but I don't think it'll be the result. People will be less likely to accept single-payer, when they know it'll come from the same Congress who promised them wondrous things from Obamacare that turned out to be a crap sandwich instead. Particularly when the vast majority of people remember and liked the health care system they already had.

So, I believe Obamacare will make single-payer a harder sell than it otherwise would have been, and people will, instead, demand what they had before.

Step 1: Make insurance mandatory and non-compliance expensive.

Step 2: Make private insurance more expensive than government insurance.

Step 3: Tax private insurance out of existence.

Step 4: Enjoy controlling 1/6th of the US economy.

Step 7: Attack and control food, fuel, and travel. So far, so good. The TSA is right there.

When Reid openly admits the end game is a socialist, totalitarian state-hell, it means the left has won and we peasants have lost and been subjugated. The GOP is socialist-lite and elections are meaningless.

Conservatives and or Christians must live in the shadows, keep their heads down and pray that the spy eye of government does not find them. It took some eighty years for the USSR to fail, maybe some part of a third or fourth generation of my family will survive to see if this oppressive time will end.

Yes, it is. It is also taking from those that work to pay for those that don't. Socialism in its purest form....taking from the rich to give to those that aren't. That is the real insanity don't you think? Self reliance is eventually destroyed and that is Communism. Obama's dream of the single-payer system actually the Government/Dictator....and this will not make for better medicine or health.

I follow your logic, but -- like a lot of other things -- it will be impossible to go back (for the country as a whole). Whereas single payer will be the path of least resistance (actually the only foreseeable path).

I don’t think health insurance and health care costs are the result of crony capitalism. In this case, it is government interference in the market, pure and simple. Government mandating coverage for all kinds of things people don’t want or need, government programs that attempt to control prices (Medicare, Medicaid) while increasing demand, and government regulations and paperwork that increase the cost of health care while decreasing access and quality.

The only solution is to get government out of health insurance and health care and have providers and patients deal with each other directly. Everything else is doomed to fail.

“I don’t think health insurance and health care costs are the result of crony capitalism.”

There is a revolving door between the FDA and doctors and drug manufacturers and health insurers. They collude to get drugs approved, paid for, others denied, alternatives denied. Fish oil manufactured by a drug company - the only one - sells for about $169/bottle. You could buy the same thing at a health food store for less than $20, yet the real fish oil manufacturer cannot make the identical medical claim.

All government agencies work the same way.

I had dinner with an old friend the other night who is an Irish citizen (married to a US citizen and has lived here for 20+ years). She is generally apolitical, but about this topic she is literally beside herself, absolutely cannot conceive that people are "clamoring" for a national healthcare system. "People who think they want this, don't have the slightest idea of what they're asking for". A few years ago, I remember when her mother needed a stent and it took well over 18 months to schedule the surgery.... and her mother was only 56. More recently, her father (who is now in his early 70s) has had ungodly problems with his shoulder and arm after a lifetime spent as a fisherman, and doctors there won't do more than tell him "take aspirin". He's just "too old" for them to waste their time with.

I could not disagree with you more. Just take a look at the sheeple out there and consider their priorities! When the ACA begins to negatively impact their lives, they will blame their employers, the “evil corporations” for all things negative. The marxists in DC will print stories about the “evil corporations” being to concerned with profit so they are raising health care premiums. Or the “evil corporations” are dropping plans. Or the “evil corporations” are laying off workers.

We will see this over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Then we will see the media begin to talk about the need for the government to take it over completely to save the proletariet from the evil borgouis.

The seals will bark and clap and vote in the American Idol phone poll.

We just saw as much in November, so now it should be very predictable.

Toward the beginning of the year, a parade of Dems blamed Republicans for a myriad of disasters due to the sequester. Recently, Obama has made speech after speech about the "phony" scandals. The major media was complicit in both. But the majority of people didn't buy either one of them.

Like you, I'm certain that there will be people who'll blame employers and corporations for the problems of Obamacare. But similar to the others, I don't believe the majority will. And it's that majority that I think will stop single-payer.
