AR:Gun toting teachers' names must remain private

Are people safer if criminals know who is carrying concealed handguns? Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel seems to think so.

With school starting soon, he claims that if the Clarksville, Arkansas School District lets employees carry concealed handguns at school, their names must be made public. This is his second attempt to derail the school district’s proposal.

McDaniel’s demand to publicize the names will greatly limit the protection these employees can offer.

School shooters have a strategic advantage in that they determine when and where to attack.

The alternative of hiring uniformed armed guards is not only costly, with one armed guard costing more than the cost of training and equipping over 20 employees, but also relatively ineffective as they are usually the first victims shot (e.g., see here and here).

The benefit of letting some unknown teachers, staff and administrators carry concealed handgun is that the killers don't know who to attack first.

The benefit of letting some unknown teachers, staff and administrators carry concealed handgun is that the killers don't know who to attack first. Publicizing their names might intimidate employees and lead them to decide not to participate in the program.

McDaniel has already gone to some tortured extremes in fighting against the Clarksville School District's plan. As the state's attorney general, he is often asked to interpret the state's laws. In this case, he claims that while private businesses can hire armed guards, a public entity such as a school district doesn't have the same power.

However debatable that is, there are other parts of the law that clearly deal with government entities. For example, local government entities, such as school districts, can deputize individuals.

Allowing volunteer teachers to be armed will make schools safer. Mass shootings in schools increased at least fourfold after the gun free school zone act was passed:

His career as a so-called "public servant" needs to be cut short.

Didn’t Columbine have an actual guard? As I recall he’d been detailed to watch a remote site where students (horrors!) smoked. One problem with guards is that administrators don’t see a need for them and will therefore task them with non-guard related duties. Then the “guard” won’t be in a position to act when the time comes. Whereas, the teachers will be with the targets 90% of the time and in the ideal position to respond to threats.

Maybe the AG should use reverse psychology and demand that teachers who are not carrying ‘concealed’ weapons MUST post a ‘gun free zone’ sign on their doors.

That would help any potential shooter(s) to be directed to ‘safer’ rooms to enter.

[As for the AG, to quote Ron White, “You can’t fix stupid.”]

It makes one wonder whether the AG even knows what ‘concealed’ means.

Clarksville should call his bluff and release the names of every school employee. If all are officially authorized to carry weapons, the school district can comply with this petty dictator’s demands and still deter criminals.

Can’t allow one of our ideas to work flawlessly....

Besides, the lives that are lost in school shootings aren’t important people, the ruling class has security in their kid’s schools.

Simple solution, make getting your CCW and deputizing part of the job description and a requirement for employment. The simply publish the fact that EVERYONE is trained and authorized to carry a concealed firearm.

A pretty good idea, I doubt that the teachers union would allow it. Might work in some rural areas, though....
