MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (AP) When a stray bullet pierced the top of Brendon Mackey's head, the 7-year-old was on his way to a July Fourth fireworks celebration with his dad and other family members. He died the next day in a Richmond hospital, a bullet lodged at the base of his skull, sparking a methodical, door-to-door search for a most elusive killer: celebratory gunfire.
How stupid! Should they look fora Middle Easterner, or an Hispanic? Those are the only people I know of who regularly shoot bullets into the air to fall who knows where!
For some cultures, gravity is a hard-to-comprehend scientific concept.

I know a couple of people who live in Midlothian, which is a suburb of Richmond. Richmond is like the Detroit of Virginia.

Helmets, folks, helmets for all......
Slow news day?
They never should have stopped teaching about gravity in grade school.
These people ever hear of blanks?
I would guess hispanics, but you know what I don’t get?
Firecrackers are cheaper that ammo, so why would you do it?
I’m glad that I’ve always lived some place more sensible.
I remember early in my marriage, my husband wanted to go hunting on opening day and had nobody to go with him. I sai that I’d go (I wa yong and dumb) and would take the baby. We set up the play pen in a clearing, spread a blanket and I sat reading a French novel that I had never finished in college with a fallen log to lean on.
It seemed forever before he came back. I cold hear gunshots all around. At one point, I heard the voices of some men, and I became a little nervous. I could hear them for a long time before I saw them hiking through the clearing on the other side. I realized that they had no idea that my daughter and I were there!
When my husband came back I asked if he’ shot anything. “There’s nothing out there.”
“What were all those shots” I asked.
“They’re just shooting at trees, it’s opening day,” he answerd.
“How far do those bullets travel?” I asked. I don’t remember the answer except that it alarmed me because I realized that the hunters surrounding us had no idea to expect that we’d be there. I realized that we were sitting ducks, despite our red clothes. The clearing in the woods was a very stupid place to be. I told him off, and he agreed. I’ve never gone out in the woods with him again.

ONE WORD!!!!!!!
JOE BIDEN.
He was demonstrating how to fire a shotgun into the air to ward off evil spirits and gang bangers and intruders and home invaders etc etc etc
when a municipality in Colorado suggested making a drone hunting license I thought to myself, that the best way to get people killed or injured would be to tell people it is ok to shoot rifles into the sky. I suppose there are locales in Colorado were this is not a problem, but in farm country and towns this can kill.
mythbusters I believe proved that if the bullet is straight up and down that the bullet probably can not kill, but almost any angle less than 90° can.
Gunny says: âOne of you stupid MFâs shoot in the air again, I will tear your head off and....â
At least Joe was not recommending slugs or 00 buck.
Or somebody from Detroit. I’ve read that on their “Devil’s Night”, the cops park under overpasses...
There is no such thing as gravity. The earth sucks. (old skydiving joke...and not all that funny)
Mythbusters are morons.
They should have a 630 grain bullet dropped on their head from a mile up.
Doof!!!
“These people ever hear of blanks?”
Won’t cycle the action.
I'm still a little squeamish about firing a gun.
But there are kids here. I would get over feeling squeamishness pretty quickly.
If I through fireworks and intruder doesn't flee or show signs of leaving, I would YELL - IDENTIFY YOURSELF. Then I would fire and maybe throw another firework!
The fireworks would give me a little time to get the gun out.
But the den, the kitchen, the breakfast room, the bookshelves, etc. would suffer greatly from fireworks!
That’s why they dictated that you had to shoot them down with shotguns.
I don’t suppose the perp in this case was firing a 50BMG. Then again lots more folks are getting these Barrett rifles of late
That’s fine for those little toy electric drones or thimbledrome planes I suppose

The two best references on the subject are “Hatcher’s Notebook”, (by Julian S. Hatcher, 3rd edition, June 1962, Stackpole Books, ISBN: 0811707954) which includes a chapter on bullets fired vertically, and an article titled “Terminal Velocity and Penetration Studies,” by Lucien C. Haag, which appeared in Vol 2, No. 1 of Wound Ballistics Review. This information is excerpted from both.
The Haag article used a ballistics computation program to calculate vertically fired bullet performance and came up with results comparable with Hatcher’s work. Using bullets ranging from the .22 rim fire to the 180gr .30 caliber spitzer in the .30-06 the time of flight (up & back) ranged from a low of 25 seconds for the .25ACP to a long of 77 seconds for the M193 ball. Maximum altitudes ranged from a low of 2288 feet for the .25ACP to a high of 10,103 feet for the 180gr .30-06. Terminal velocities ranged from 134 f/s for a tumbling .22 Short to a high of 323 f/s for the 180gr .30-06.
As a point of interest, a velocity of about between 180 and 360 f/s (±) is needed to penetrate skin. The wide range comes from the non-uniform strength of normal skin tissue. Projectile shape has no statistically significant effect on the penetration. However, one could still be seriously injured if struck by a falling bullet even if it doesn’t break the skin.
MUCH MORE at link.
Back when I lived in Nola I came out on New Year’s day and found a bad ding on the roof of my car from a falling bullet. It probably came from the St Bernard project or maybe Gentilly.
Mythbusters is garbage science and should be viewed for entertainment only.
Slow news day?
What goes up, must come down. It’s a difficult concept for some people to grasp.
That brings about a whole new set of dangers. Get on youtube and search ‘butt rocket’.
Nice mouth.
What goes up must come down.
Must be a slow news day for AP to suddenly run with this over a month old story.
Shooting celebratory bullets into the air has always struck me as one of the most brainless acts on this planet.
So does San Jose, CA.
Time to listen to Blood Sweat and Tears, “What goes up, must come down.”
Go to hell! /s
In Arizona they are extremely serious about celebratory gunfire. On those holidays they set up listening equipment to quickly triangulate the origin of the gunfire, and then there are cops all over the place, looking for the shooter, and with no sense of humor.
It is a felony in Arizona.
When you’re not allowed to fire your gun, shoot off your rifle.
Only orgasm a lot of young male Muzzies, who don’t have the opportunity to rape Western women, ever have.
No, Norfolk-Hampton Roads has that title.
Thanks for the /S.
It is stupid for people to fire indiscriminately into the air.
It is also a really, really tiny problem. From reading about these accidents, which are widely published, I believe one happens about every two years.
One preventable death every two years in a population of 300+ million. Careless use of 5 gallon buckets kills 60 times as many.
“Only orgasm a lot of young male Muzzies, who dont have the opportunity to rape Western women, ever have.”
There are lots of goats and dogs in the Muslim world.
A few years ago, cops arrested a woman who fired into the air to scare off thieves who were stealing her car. They have even arrested people who fired into the ground to threaten criminals. The actual criminals, they don’t care so much about.
