Radioactive water overruns Fukushima barrier - TEPCO
rt.com ^ | August 10th 2013 | not stated

Posted on 08/10/2013 9:22:02 AM PDT by Mr Radical

Contaminated groundwater accumulating under the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant has risen 60cm above the protective barrier, and is now freely leaking into the Pacific Ocean, the plant’s operator TEPCO has admitted. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which is responsible for decommissioning the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, on Saturday said the protective barriers that were installed to prevent the flow of toxic water into the ocean are no longer coping with the groundwater levels, Itar-Tass reports.

The contaminated groundwater, which mixes with radioactive leaks seeping out of the plant, has already risen to 60cm above the barriers – the fact which TEPCO calls a major cause of the massive daily leak of toxic substances.

Earlier on Friday, the company announced it started pumping out contaminated groundwater from under Fukushima, and managed to pump out 13 tons of water in six hours on Friday. TEPCO also said it plans to boost the pumped-out amount to some 100 tons a day with the help of a special system, which will be completed by mid-August. This will be enough to seal off most of the ongoing ocean contamination, according to TEPCO’s estimates.

However, Japan’s Ministry of Industry has recently estimated that some 300 tons of contaminated groundwater have been flowing into the ocean daily ever since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the disaster.

TEPCO also promised it will urgently reinforce the protective shields to keep radioactive leaks at bay. The company has repeatedly complained it is running out of space and has had to resort to pumping water into hastily-built tanks of questionable reliability, as more than 20,000 tons of water with high levels of radioactive substances has accumulated in the plant’s drainage system.

Water samples recently taken at an underground passage below the Fukushima nuclear plant showed extreme levels of radiation comparable to those taken immediately after the March 2011 catastrophe. The tested water, which had been mixing with ground water and flowing into the ocean, contained 2.35 billion Becquerels of cesium per liter – some 16 million times above the limit.

The news from Fukushima gets worse every day - this is building to be the biggest environmental disaster in modern times and the Japanese seem to be running out of ideas? Time for an international oversight and response?

the International community should have been helping from the get -go - the contamination is already in the fields/animals in California - they are keeping a lid on it -

“16 million times above the limit” - that ‘s pretty concentrated! If they stopped it today, California would still be washed by it for up to another year.

If you think tuna was iffy with it’s mercury levels - what about now? I no longer eat tuna - ro, knowingly, any fish from the Pacific.

But what about the produce/meats in your supermarkets?

Truly more and more urgent to eat local/organic/home grown.
Much of the fancy bottled water is tap water from Los Angeles. Bad enough in itself, but now?

When I do buy bottled water, I only buy SPRING water - and ti has to be so labeled - and it’s much cheaper to boot. But I thank God for my own sweet well water - and living in the state furthest from California

I'm not worried about it. I'm much more likely to die at the hands of a future ex-wife than be affected by radiation in Japan.

Everybody dies of something. Spending a lot of time worrying about dodging all the bullets detracts from the quality of life. ;)

And the predicted health effects have not materialized.

So, you'd have no worries living next to the plant.

You ask: “Is this radioactive water headed towards California?”

SHAME ON FREEPERS

It’s bad enough the Obama says no problem - quintensential obama - or that the MSM is obeying by spinking it and our poliricians are silent - but when even Freepers rely on being spoonfed too rather than do any independent research - it’s truly disheartening.

Is this radioactive water headed towards California?

The ocean bound contaminates begin arriving within the next year. The truth is we are in uncharted territory. We have never dumped this much nuclear contamination into an ocean before. If it just continues doing what it has the past two years, some predict the affects on the west coast US will be just a little greater then all those above ground nuclear tests. However it is impossible to accurately predict what will happen because we do not know.

There are three pathways for radiation to the US west coast.

Particles traveling from the atmosphere in Japan to the US. Those were significant in the first few weeks of the accident, but have tapered off the past two years.

Particles in the ocean that make it into the food chain and accumulate in the animals we eat through bio-accumulation. We have no way to predict the actual concentrations or how dangerous they will be.

The other pathway is contaminated coastal waters along the US will release contaminated particles into the atmosphere near the coast. These particles can be breathed into our lungs. Someone who actually analyzed radiation from a nuclear plant operating along the coast of Japan, found that was the biggest source increasing cancer risks to coastal residents.

The above applies if the situation does not worsen. The odds of it worsening are very significant. They have recently resorted to asphalting the areas they can to keep rainwater out of the ground. The entire complex was built over an aquifer. Very serious concerns that the impervious glass walls built along the coast will cause water levels to rise. They have begun to pump it out a couple of days ago. They plan in two years to construct a frozen barrier wall underground on the inland side of the site that prevents the hundreds of tons of groundwater from flowing into the ground under the plant. The problem is no one has ever built a frozen underground barrier as large as they require.

And we should all say prayers for the workers still working at Fukushima. Many of them have already reached exposure levels that qualify them for Leukemia compensation. In other words, they are just about guaranteed to eventually get the disease.

Thanks so much. I appreciate your research and your links.

I looked online repeatedly but found it difficult to find radiation levels for my community in eastern WA.

Yes. That is so. Nuclear explosions are designed to convert mass into energy. E=MC2. What Fukushima has been dumping into the ocean is radioactive mass.

The sum of those nuclear blasts did not put as much radioactive material into the ocean and atmosphere as Fukushima.
Bombs are highly efficient in converting matter into energy - hence the astonishing heat/light/sound display of nuclear explosions.
Fukushima had a few small explosions, nothing on the order of the blasts you show. Less nuclear material was converted into energy - more nuke material flowing into the air, land and ocean.

Many thanks for the links and info.
Kinda been here before: it rained heavily on England and Scotland in the 36 hours after Chernobyl and deposited a lot of material; at the time, livestock and crops had to be destroyed in mountain areas of Scotland and Northern England; not aware of any evidence of long term effects here in England.

And the real big problem is all that mass in the Spent Fuel pools and common spent fuel storage area. The worse case right now is the ground becomes unstable due to liquefaction and the buildings start collapsing from the numerous after shocks they are still having. Then the cooling stops and all that mass catches fire. The site already sunk about 5 to 6 feet from the big quake. And they have admitted the ground water problems. The Japanese themselves have more or less admitted all this recently after winning the last elections. They are slowly letting the truth out now.
