PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is providing each of his patrol deputies with a semi-automatic AR-15 style rifle, and has ordered them to carry a weapon at all times, even when they're off duty.

Arpaio says "we live in a violent society," and he wants his officers to have "enough firepower to fight back."

I have yet to hear of Joe's Deputies blowing away innocent civilians on "Commando Raids"! His Deputies operate in a very precarious zone and DEFINETLY need to be prepared at all times!

God bless them all and keep them safe!!!

Very true, given that the ATF facilitates the arming of the drug gangs around here - and no, all of those guns didn't go to Mexico and some that did have come back into the US.

Almost makes me want to move to AZ and become a deputy for Joe. A free S&W AR. Great job perk. Free ammo too?

With the heavily armed Mexican drug cartel members traveling through Arizona through the Nogales, AZ border crossing or through the desert, this does not surprise me at all.

Two notes.

First of all, not too long ago was the story of an officer who got in a gunfight and had to shoot through his own front window. Though his PD issued full length AR-15s, it permitted POWs, and he just happened to have a much shorter variety of AR-15. He did not think he could have done so with a full length rifle.

Compressed length of a full sized rifle: 30.5”
Extended length: 33.75”

Use a measuring tape. That is way too far for typical front seat use, firing through a window.

That being said, S&W also makes an AR-15 that fires .22LR, which cost about a tenth the price of 5.56mm, the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22.

"Should have Osprey Defense piston kits installed on all of them!"

Why?

Please provide enough reliable data wherein a proper statistical analysis infers with high degree of confidence that such a change provides a statistical significant degree of improvement in cycling reliability, longevity and accuracy.

Anything less is inadequate for such a positive declaration.

For what it will be worth to you, I have built three ARs with piston kits. One with the Osprey, one with the Adams Arms, and one with the CMMG kit.

I have fired over 1000 rounds in all three, with zero malfunctions due to the system in the Osprey, more than dozen functional problems with the CMMG (the bolt carrier starts to drag, changing the recoil buffer-tube efficiency), and about ten problems with the Adams Arms (had to tune the recoil spring to make the thing function in an 11 inch barrel system; the weapon begins to drag the bolt carrier after thirty or forty rounds heating).

The Osprey is the only one that has functioned flawlessly ... I have yet to clean any of the three and only a tiny amount of carbon is showing up on the three bolts, none on the carriers. I used hi temp bearing grease to lube the bolts and carriers, and after coating them I rubbed off the excess and have yet to repeat on any of the three in ~1000 rounds. The Osprey is the only one which seems to be, for all intents and purposes, self-cleaning of the piston and cup.

The CMMG is getting noticeable carbon deposits on the spring assembly through which the piston shaft moves. The Adams Arms is getting a bit sticky on recoil/repositioning, indicating there is probably carbon building up in the gass exchange chamber which pushes the piston and rod.

For some reason, the kidney shape of the Osprey seems to be somehow cleaning itself of the carbon. I have fired all sorts of ammo through all three, depending upon what I can find for $.50 or less per round. I've fired approximately 500+ of Eastern bloc steel case through the three, more than 1000 IMI through the group, and the rest Lake City/Winchester or Federal through the three.

The only negative I have yet on the Osprey is that it gets hotter near the gas bleed portion than the other two. Possibly, the heat is why the carbon seems to be self-cleaning in the piston cup.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't like it. Arpaio’s men probably need this type of firepower since the feds won't do their duty and control the border. But after seeing the local goon squads overreacting in Boston a militarized local police force in the wrong hands should scare all of us. When Joe is gone who will be controlling these guys?

Some day we all might have to defend our rights in the streets and I want odds as close to what the founding fathers envisioned as possible.

“Some day we all might have to defend our rights in the streets ...”

I live in Florida but I go to Phoenix most years for BB Spring Training. If you drive around Phoenix, you’ll note that about 2/3 of the city includes some/many Hispanics. It’s anyone’s guess how many are legal or illegal but we DO know that violence is becoming more common among illegals with an increase in illegal guns and lots of drugs. Joe would be a fool to not be prepared to deal with the scum....thankfully, Joe is not a fool.

If you’re going to worry about a militarized police force, pay attention to the growth of TSA numbers, missions and capabilities. Remember Zero’s promise of a large militarized private force? It’s happening.

The police force in Boston I’m sure are a bunch of regular guys. When they were searching homes for that punk terrorist they resembled marines clearing Falluja.

When one or all of our constitutional rights are supreme court ruled out of existence whats to stop these regular guys from all over the country from becoming Boston thugs?

I’m just saying don’t further risk your rights for a perceived greater security. I fully supported the Patriot Act but now fear it might be the most dangerous legislation ever passed.

Local cops should not be in a position where they have the capability to turn these type weapons on you or me.

I’m with you. The motto “Protect and Serve” has become “Whatever it Takes” in today’s world. A lesson I have learned at my age is never give government more power than the Constitution allows, ever. Especially when the guy’s you like are in charge. Remember they will not stay there forever. All victories and defeats are temporary.
