As a child, L.A. Archbishop Jose Horacio Gomez traveled back and forth across the border from his home in Monterrey, Mexico, to his uncle's in San Antonio, Texas. He made the trip so often that he hardly distinguished between Mexico and the United States. "It was easy to cross in those times," said Gomez, now 61, who became a citizen in his mid-40s. "I guess my first impression was that people could live in both countries at the same time."
When he talks about the border, he slips into the Spanish slang of his childhood. He uses migra for U.S. immigration officials and mica for the old-style border-crossing cards he needed to visit his American cousins in Texas.
"I'm an immigrant myself," he said, squinting behind his rimless glasses as he smiles.
Gomez's two-year tenure as the leader of the nation's largest archdiocese has been marked by a decidedly quieter and more cautious style than that of his predecessor, Cardinal Roger Mahony, who was quick to chime in on hot-button issues such as illegal immigration and workers' rights.
But in recent weeks, as debate over the most comprehensive immigration reform bill in a generation reaches a head, Gomez is taking a firm and public stand. He has released a book that touches on his experiences as an immigrant and in an impassioned sermon he affirmed his support for the immigration reform bill, which would create a 13-year path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living in the country without legal status

I need to be understanding and compassionate if an illegal is using stolen SSN that belongs to me as the Archbishop explained be understanding and compassionate or if an illegal is driving without a license or insurance hits my car resulting in damage of 5k..I need to be understanding and compassionate.. And while he worked in the Houston diocese in the early 1990s, a fellow priest told him about how la migra pulled over a van full of people on their way to Mass and deported most of them to Mexico.
From his standpoint shouldn't he be saying how illegals must follow our laws and this includes having drivers license/insurance before they get behind the wheel of car ?
These are the priests Jesus warned about in the bible. They have no understanding at all. Encouraging people to break the law is something he will answer for on the other side.
Does this mean Zuckerberg puts money in the “collection plate”????
I doubt it but anything is possible in this world.
When the Catholic Irish immigrated to our country and the Catholic Italians, Poles etc. etc. they were despised as inferior people by the dominant Protestants, there was hostility.
So I understand the perspective of the Roman Catholic Church in an historical context.
But I’m not on the side of the bigotry or violence of the past.
I am on the side of obeying the immigration laws that have been widely disobeyed.
The next time you cross over STAY THERE.
Help you people who have become a permanent underclass.
Maybe while he’s at it, he can try to understand why his country (Mexico) is such a Shiite-hole that people are desperate to leave.
“I’m trying to ... explain to people so they can understand why they came here without papers and broke the law,” he said. “There is a reason for that, and we have to be understanding and compassionate and find a solution.”
I robbed a bank because I needed the money. I was looking for a better life. It’s why I broke the law. Please be understanding.
A fact-based (vs. emotional, touchy-feely) counter-argument in regard to illegal immigration is presented by Fr. Patrick Bascio in his book: "On The Immorality of Illegal Immigration: A Priest Poses an Alternative Christian View"
Archbishop Gomez says, "We are talking about fathers who, without warning, won't be coming home for dinner tonight," he said.
So what? Military families experience constant separation also. People make the choice to serve knowing that separation is part of the deal. Why does Archbishop Gomez believe that people who make the choice to break our laws for self-serving reasons somehow have a right to special treatment to prevent family separation?
And where is his sense of justice for those affected adversely by illegal immigration?
And just try as an American to illegally cross into Mexico, set up a household, start working and try sending your kids to Mexican public schools and sign up for all that great welfare state benefits.
Sir, you are a knave and a fool.
The reason is they are lawbreakers! Not surprised to read a priest will embrace evil. He doesn't take the Word of God, seriously, nor Our Constitution.
Tell him to go back home too, we do not need to be understanding, or how about this, we understand why they are here, now understand me, go the F home we do not want you here, UNDERSTAND
The Archbishop wants more people in the pews. Simple as that. They wouldn’t be supporting it if most of the illegals were Muslims.
Archbishop Gomez followed the law and became a naturalized citizen. Perhaps you didn’t know that. I would assume that he is encouraging everyone to become a citizen thr RIGHT way!

**I am on the side of obeying the immigration laws**
Just what Archbishop Gomez did!
I am on the side of obeying the immigration laws

I find amnesty for those who have broken the law to be the wrong policy and I will not support that by openly doing it or by making their children citizens through backdoor means.
Yes, justice. The fact that he is a citizen doesn't negate his apparent disregard for the harm inflicted on his fellow Americans by illegals. Having lived near the border, I've seen the results first hand. One needs only to look at what has happened to California to see the outcome for the rest of the country if what he is advocating becomes law. And let's face it - he and his fellow prelates who advocate for such nationally destructive policies are, practically speaking, insulated from the fallout by virtue of their exalted positions.
Archbishop Gomez: "Do we really believe that America is one nation under God, made up from every other people?" he wrote. "Or is America instead a nation that is essentially white, Anglo-Saxon, and Protestant, but permits the presence of peoples of other races, colors, and religions?"
His above-quoted commentary carries an anti-white, racist tone, and implies that the source of opposition to amnesty is "white, Anglo-Saxon Protestants" who desire to exclude people of "other races, colors, and religions" (which is, of course, demonstrably NOT the case).
We are one nation under God; we are also a nation with a right to a secure border (for obvious reasons) and an immigration system that operates in our national interest.
Pope Benedict XVI:
At the same time, states have the right to regulate migration flows and to defend their own frontiers, always guaranteeing the respect due to the dignity of each and every human person."
For Archbishop Gomez to falsely imply that racism is at the root of opposition to amnesty is morally wrong. His comments are divisive, unworthy of someone in his position, and display his obvious bias in regard to this issue.
Latinos, legal and illegal, VOTE. And they vote overwhelmingly (70-80%) for pro-abortion politicians.
Archbishop Gomez is therefore tirelessly working to solidify a pro-abortion voting bloc in the U.S.
You believe this? Snort.
um what?
We don’t need immigration deform if these foreign invaders applied the legal and existing way as hundreds of thousands do every year.
An anti-American, anti-biblical racist...
