A U.S. human rights group on Monday delivered a petition with more than 100,000 signatures urging that this years Nobel Peace Prize go to Pfc. Bradley Manning, who was convicted on espionage charges last month for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks.
Norman Solomon, the co-founder of RootsAction, delivered the petition in Oslo, Norway, on Monday to the research director of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the Nobel Prizes.
Solomon said that Manning should receive the prize for exposing government secrecy and wrongdoing in the Iraq War. He argued that the Nobel committees selection of Manning for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize would make up for giving the award to President Obama in 2009.
The office of the Nobel Committee is under a war cloud of its own making, Solomon wrote in a post on the groups website Monday. Now, the Nobel Committee and its Peace Prize are in dire need of rehabilitation. In truth, the Nobel Peace Prize needs Bradley Manning much more than the other way around.
Manning faces up to 90 years in prison after being convicted of five counts of espionage in a military court-martial last month, although he was acquitted of the most serious charge, aiding the enemy.
Asle Toje, the Norwegian Nobel Committee's research director, said Monday that the Nobel Peace Prize is not a popularity contest.
A large number of signatures will neither help nor hinder his [Manning's] candidacy," Toje said, according to Reuters.
"It will be reviewed on its merit, based on the principles laid out in the will of Alfred Nobel. It's not unprecedented that we receive a large volume of supporting material for a candidate ... but these do not influence the committee."
Manning was nominated for this years prize by Nobel Peace laureate Mairead Corrigan-Maguire, who won the prize in 1977 for her peace efforts in Northern Ireland.
I can think of no one more deserving, she wrote inan op-ed in The Guardian explaining her nomination. His incredible disclosure of secret documents to Wikileaks helped end the Iraq War, and may have helped prevent further conflicts elsewhere.
This years Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in October.
I would say to Mairead Corrigan-Maguire it's more likely Manning caused a lot of Afghan and Iraqi people helping the U.S. Military to be murdered.
Considering how meaningless and radical Left the Nobel Committee is now, I can see this happening.
Agreed...Obama did nothing and got it, at least Manning will be going to Leavenworth, hopefully for a long time to get it.
Has Manning not been sentenced yet? I haven’t kept up.
Now has as much nobility and value as what one gets out of a box of Cracker Jacks.
His incredible disclosure of secret documents to Wikileaks helped end the Iraq War.
It did? Which one?
No, he hasn’t been sentenced yet. The judge just cut the number of years he can be sentenced to 90 years, hopefully that’s what he’ll get.
Eli or Peyton?...............or Archie?................
I'm cool wit' dat.
Well if Obozo got one just for showing up and voting ‘present’ then these guys EACH deserve one...................
The Nobel is already a joke. This article isn’t worth a single sheet of toilet paper, nor is the Nobel committee.
I’m calling BS! How many Superbowls has he ever won! ONE, that’s it. Even the Brazilian super model’s boy toy has THREE of gosh sake.
... on terms favorable to al-Queda. Maybe Tokyo Rose deserves one, too.
Sure he’s going to do well with the addition of Welker this year and Denver might even win the Super Bowl ... but the Nobel for Peyton Manning? That’s a little premature.
“Group petitions for Manning to receive Nobel Peace Prize”
Typical example of how the Nobel prize has been dumbed down. Any nomination that puts one of the Mannings ahead of Joe Montana is a farce.
Yeh, hell ya, give it to em. Completely destroy any credibility Nobel has left for its prize.
So I think Manning would fit right in with them.
