Current new vehicles have all sorts of microprocessors with sensors collecting data and sharing same on data busses every millisecond.
Having a data logging module storing the data as it flows around is not big deal technologically.

Auto black boxes, a greedy plaintiff trial lawyers dream for doubling his take home income. Seize on one or two lines of data to blame the accident on the other driver, not his client’s drunk/ cell phone texting, across the white line driving at the moment of the crash.
