Kim Jong Un Praises North Korean Smart Phone By Katherine Connell August 14, 2013 3:41 PM

North Korea claims to have domestically manufactured a smart phone, a device called the Arirang, which appears to use a version of Android as its operating system.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency released photos of Kim Jong Un touring a facility where the phones are supposedly made. (Notice that nothing resembling manufacturing is going on in the photos.)

According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un praised the “high pixels” of the phone’s camera function and predicted that the “hand phone” would “instill national pride and self-respect” in the North Korean people. Though the manufacture of the phones began “a few days ago,” according to the report, Kim Jong Un believes they are in “high demand.”

Martyn Williams, the editor of a website on North Korean technology, says the phones were likely produced in China and shipped to the factory.

Cell phones were introduced into North Korea in 2008 thanks to a partnership with the Egyptian telecom firm Orascom, but subscribers are limited to making domestic calls. Presumably anyone purchasing an “Arirang” would be prohibited from using it to surf the worldwide web.

No matter where these 3rd world sh**holes are around the globe, the citizens always seem to have cell phones and cigarettes.

What kind of apps are on a North Korean smartphone?

Daily “Dear Leader” worship instructions?

Directions to the nearest labor camp?

Guide to the tastiest tree bark?

LOL

You know I just realized something. In every picture of Kim what’s his face is in.. his flunkies are also in.. and in every one they are taking meticulous notes.

Hmmm sounds it’s high time for an Obama photoshop job!

Cell phones require a lot less new infrastructure, in 3rd world countries, than land lines would. The 3rd world is going directly from no phones, to cell phones — skipping an expensive step in the technology.

Tobacco would be as cheap as any other weed, if it weren’t for all the taxes. They are simply priced to what the local markets can bear.

I'm guessing Lil’ Kim just had one of the dozen Chinese megaplants that churn smartphones out, crank out a few cases with slightly altered software and labeling. Then he has a photo-op “inspecting” the new phones. Notice in the first pick, you don't see an assembly line, just a bunch of people in clean rooms suits (without masks) sitting at computers. (Why would you need a clean room suit to write software code?!?). In the next pic, we see him sitting at a table with a bunch of powered down equipment behind him, but still nothing resembling an assembly line.

I bet they're great phones.

Except they only work one way. You get calls from the central party office (and you will answer when it rings, Comrade). You listen and then you obey.

Don't bother talking. There's no microphone.

I hear the DNC is waiting for version 1.2 to come out before they get on board.

The US version of this phone will include an anti-racism chip which will prevent all forms of racism from being transmitted.

That's what communists do, and they really believe the West falls for it (but we all laugh at them). I remember a news article in the early 1980's, where the Soviets were touting their manufacturing prowess in creating a home-grown PC and software, at a trade show in Moscow. The machine looked suspiciously like an Apple II. A western journalist typed a couple commands, and the screen display showed a listing of the monitor ROM (operating system) that displayed the Apple copyrights. Yup, a complete copy and the Soviets were too dumb to alter it before showing it to the world.
