Jerusalem, shared ‘security blanket,’ key to Israeli-Palestinian peace
Catholic News Service ^ | August 14, 2013 | Judith Sudilovsky

JERUSALEM (CNS) — Coveted as a spiritual and political capital by both Israelis and Palestinians, the status of the city of Jerusalem has stood out as one of the pivotal topics in their ongoing peace negotiations.

snip

“Jerusalem is very critical to the negotiations,” said Bernard Sabella, associate professor of sociology at Bethlehem University and a member of the Palestinian parliament. “U.N. resolutions and even the United States recognize East Jerusalem as occupied territory. We are going to have to find a solution set-up which is acceptable to both parties.

Rabbi Rosen said that although there are some fringe Jewish extremists who want to exert control over the Temple Mount, the vast majority of rabbinical authorities continue to maintain that Jews are not in a position to rebuild the temple.

“What Jews want is recognition from the Muslim world that this is our holy site, too, and more than that, that it became their holy site because it was our holy site,” he said.

The Vatican continues to believe that the special status of Jerusalem must be guaranteed and internationally recognized in order to ensure the protection of its historic and religious character. It maintains its position that any agreement on the sovereignty of Jerusalem once reached should then also “ensure freedom of religion and of conscience for all; equality before the law of the three monotheistic religions and their institutions and faithful; respect for the identity and sacred character of the city, its universal religious significance and its cultural heritage; freedom of access to the shrines and worship within them; and respect for the Status Quo,” the long-standing agreement regulating the legal and financial status of key Christian sites and access to them.

Rabbi David Rosen mentions in this YouTube video the "mutual respect" Pope Francis has for the Jews (too):

"Rabbi David Rosen "Live From..." Jerusalem on Pope Francis I" - (YouTube video - 2:32 mins)
Published on Mar 14, 2013

"Rabbi David Rosen, AJC's International Director of Interreligious Affairs, spoke from Jerusalem outside Notre Dame de Zion Church about Pope Francis I and his historically-strong relationship with the Jewish people. "We anticipate a close relationship with Pope Francis, as, together with our Catholic partners, we continue to advance Catholic-Jewish relations. Pope Francis has demonstrated his profound solidarity with the Jewish community in Argentina in both times of sorrow and joy. We look forward to continued close collaboration with the Catholic Church under his leadership as we have been privileged to enjoy with his predecessors." said Rabbi Rosen."

I fail to see how sharing the bed with an axe murderer gives anyone security.

Zechariah 12:3

3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

The problem is the ax murderer is already in the bed and is bigger than you...

Even the toughest kid on the block can only beat off the bigger guy for so long...

I suspect the old guard looks at the youngsters coming up and may have concluded it they don't get something done now the youngsters will lose it all..

Palestinians do not want peace. There is no pressure on Palestinians to accept peace. There is every incentive, foreign aid and such, for them to not want peace.

The only reason the dog-in-the-manger Palisimians (spelling intentional) care about Jerusalem is because it’s holy to Jews.

Coveted as a spiritual and political capital by both Israelis and Palestinians, the status of the city of Jerusalem has stood out as one of the pivotal topics in their ongoing peace negotiations.

The Vatican is using the false-a-stinians to get their foot in the door for what they have always coveted.

Israel should not confuse the nice Christians that come to Israel with ROME . Christians haven't changed , they never persecuted Jews . And the Jesuits which the pope is one haven't changed , they were formed to destroy those nice Christians and would think of doing nothing different to the Jews and that includes using the false-a-stinians to do it.

The Vatican (Rome) has always wanted to steal Jerusalem and plenty of Jews have died in the past because of their covetousness of this city which does not belong to them.

It is a halfway idea for Israel to surrender its sovereignty over Jerusalem (or as Jews describe it in their liturgy, “Jerusalem the holy city”) to Christian interlopers regardless of their denomination.

Nice try.

Some of the older capitulating Israelis in the labor party and a few other fringe groups feel that way but the younger more vibrant and confident Israelis do not.

You are right. The key to the article is in its very first word, the sin of covetousness exemplified by this shameful attempt to steal Jerusalem from the sovereign state of Israel by the Vatican. For shame!

The current Forbes has a long article that provides the actual method for resolving the problems between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The common interest is money.

Cisco, microsoft, dell and HP are uniting young people on both sides into ventures that require agreements while money is being made. They have the talent and are making the money

The union is real, not pie in the sky

Ie, the Vatican wants Jerusalem taken from Israel and internationalized. After all, the church is the “new Israel.”

Catholics are NOT Christians .
Christians follow Jesus and the scriptures and believe in the God of Abraham , Issac and Jacob (who is not the same as the allah of the muslims).
Catholics follow a man called the pope and worship a piece of bread that they call Jesus and follow man made tradition and insist that the God of Abraham , Issac and Jacob is the same as the allah of the muslims.Catholics will tell you that it doesn't matter what the bible says you have to follow the pope.

“Catholics are NOT Christians .”

Oh cut it out with that crap. Not only do your comments on this thread make no sense, you are an anti-Catholic bigot to boot. There would be no Bible for you to claim if the Caatholic Church had not put it together. And it always amazes me how the Protestant religions can jump into the religious soup in the 14-1500’s and suddenly claim the Bible and Christianity as their own when they hadn’t even been around for the first 1500 years of Christianity’s existence. What gaul. What hubris. What a crock.
