'A big hoax': Experts say North Korea showing off missiles that can't fly

PYONGYANG, North Korea -- Missiles paraded through the streets of Pyongyang in recent displays of North Korean military might -- said to be capable of hitting targets throughout Asia and even in the U.S. -- are incapable of flight and are almost certainly nothing more than fakes, according to U.S. government experts and independent analysts.

"My opinion is that it's a big hoax," Markus Schiller, an aerospace engineer in Munich and former RAND Corp. military analyst, said of the intercontinental and medium-range missiles displayed in the North Korean capital in April 2012 and again two weeks ago.

U.S. government experts, having reviewed unclassified images from the most recent parade on July 27, including high-resolution photos provided by NBC News, agreed. “Our assessment is that what we are looking at is most likely simulators used for training purposes,” according to a statement to NBC News.

A photo montage from a July 26, 2013, military parade in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang shows a purported Hwasong-13 intercontinental ballistic missile, with the area where retro rockets should be mounted highlighted, along with close-ups showing that forward nozzles on the rocket bodies of two individual missiles were placed in different positions.

Our leader is too busy campaigning ..
He never got to the third lesson on leadership
As he failed lesson # two : "Do what you say , and say what you do !
Lesson #2 still has restraining orders on it , and we can't even determine what his grades were !

Meh. I wasn't looking to be led so I'm not too worked up over that.

You wouldn’t expect them to put their real missiles on display would you? Those are top secret. Designed by Kim Jong Un himself! (He also designs smart phones.)

but wouldn't they be internal??? maneuvering thrusters i understand, but to me, retro-rockets are to retard/slow movement in a given direction

sounds like maybe somebody got their words mixed up

Why let them know that we know? We should make them think we think they’re genuine.

This is an old tactic. I remember from the Penkovsky papers (1960’s) that most missiles parading thru Red Square every year were actually hollow.

They may be different, but that’s because that’s
where the blueprint was folded. Shouldn’t make any
difference in flight. Well ok, maybe a little but
not much.

Missed orbit by that much...

Short for “retrograde”. Used for slowing down and steering.

i understand what it means, and i understand maneuvering thrusters, but why would it need to "slow down"???

I had to laugh, just the other day, when my 9 year old son very emphatically told me that North Korea fails at everything. I don’t know where he heard this or came up with it, but it was out of the blue and he said it so matter of factly.

Rivets? Rivets? It’s a piece of culvert pipe. And white wall tires-—gotta be the same ones the Russians used back in the 1960’s.

ICBMs don’t obtain a normal space orbit, they use retro-rockets to “deorbit” to reach their target.

Meaning, they go into space but don’t orbit like a satellite, they come back down. You would have to use all kinds of thrusters to pinpoint where you wanted it to come down at.

i thought the whole point of being a ballistic missile was it went up and then came down in a ballistic arc... i'm no rocket scientist, but i never thought you needed retro rockets to slow one down

i still learn something new everyday, thx
