WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) released the following statement on President Obamas comments concerning violence in Egypt:
President Obamas detached and abstract statement yesterday on deteriorating conditions in Egypt is only the most recent manifestation of this Administration's failed policy in that country. As there can no longer be any reasonable doubt that what occurred in July was a military coup, the first step is to send an unequivocal message that the United States is a nation of laws and suspend aid to Egypt.
The United States has invested billions in Egypt since the Camp David peace accords, and should have significant influence with its government. President Obama, however, has squandered this leverage. In 2010, the Obama administration failed to pressure Hosni Mubarak to make an orderly transition to a more democratic system of government. Then it failed to extract any concessions from Mohammad Morsis Muslim Brotherhood regime in return for the additional billion dollars in aid it inexplicably pledged. As Morsis rule became increasingly dictatorial, this administration failed to support those calling for more inclusive and tolerant leadership.
When a military coup occurred, it failed to follow current U.S. law and suspend aid to Egypt, something that could have been done to encourage the new government to move swiftly toward democratic reforms. Not illogically, the Egyptian military took this as permission to act with impunity against the Muslim Brotherhood, which in turn is provoking violence and committing savage crimes against Coptic Christians.
The one sentiment uniting these disparate groupsas President Obama noted in his remarksis to blame the United States, the country that continues to pour taxpayer dollars into Egypt. The situation demands recognition that our country's current aid system is utterly and irretrievably broken. Not only are we giving arms and money to people who hate us around the worldin Egypt, we are managing to give arms and money in a way that makes our former friends hate us. It must stop now.
When and if the United States does resume aid to Egypt, it should be clearly targeted at producing a result that is in the best interests of the United States, which would be a secular, inclusive and stable administration that supports Camp David and will be able to maintain the Suez Canal.
But the President concluded his remarks, tellingly, with, 'We don't take sides with any particular party or political figure.' That was his policy in 2009 when he failed to vigorously support the Green Revolution in Iran. It was his policy in 2011 when he failed to swiftly call for the removal of the Syrian dictator Bashir al-Assad when there was a unified, peaceful and secular opposition to him. And it has been the basis of the Obama Administrations failed policy in Egypt, which, by refusing to use our leverage to advance U.S. interests and priorities, has contributed to that countrys descent into chaos.

Tell it to the House.
Cruz notes that all our billions have gone for nought since the Egyptian people’s hatred of the United States is at an all time high.
A good leader can take a stand. Ted Cruz did this. Mr. Obama doesn’t.
Conservatives can flap their gums about Obama not Obeying the law but if we aren’t consistent about it, we’re nothing but hypocrites. The same can be said about all the whining about all the money our government blows. We either mean it or we don’t.
And Cruz also says we can resume aid in the future in support of the goals of the United States.
I’m not following Cruz here.
Someone Egyptian, educated, on the ground and understanding why the coup was necessary drew a parallel with what would be do if Obama were to suspend the Bill of Rights in the USA and impose Sharia Law? What would we do? Would we support our military in removing Obama from the White House if this action was the only option?
Somehow Cruz is missing the real picture here. Suspend aid all you want Senator but do it for the right reasons, not some tale about rule of law and such nonsense. Moris was a deceiver that was leading the Egyptian people to Sharia Law and the people there did not want that period.
No need Senator for you to chime in now.
The Shiites have killed 650 and wounded 3000 Sunnis WITH THE WEAPONS WE GAVE THAT ARMY COMMITTING THE ATROCITIES AND WAR CRIMES!!
Cruz mentions a few paragraphs in that suspending aid to the new regime encourages a more swift acceptance of democracy, therefore eliminating a need for future billions.
I have no idea who to ping - this is beyong revolting! Cruz should know better! Is every single person in DC in the pay of Mozlems? Is all they read/watch mainstream propaganda? Are they all in cahoots with the Mozlem Brotherhood?
Is there one single elected official who cares to know the truth of what’s happened and happening in Egypt?
I seriously feel like I’m going to be sick. Rand Paul sides with MB and AQ yesterday, now Cruz jumped on the bandwagon.
My only question is:
Are these weasel politicians just incredibly ill informed and blind stupid? (In which case they should resign.)
Or are they actively, knowingly choosing the WRONG SIDE in Egypt? The Mozlem Brotherhood/Al Qaeda side? (In which case they should resign.)
Is there one single honest and intelligent person in deecee left? ONE????? With the courage to speak the truth and act on it?
It seems not.
He’s taking the Mozlem Brotherhood Al Qaeda side. He’s siding with the bad guys.
Stupidity? Money? At this point I could give a rip.
Anyone who goes out of their way to side with MB is worse than a fool.
The ones committing atrocities are the MB. The military has shown incredible restraint.
A better approach would be for Obama to declare that a coup has occurred, and to ask the Congress to pass a law permitting aid notwithstanding. That would the non-lawless way to handle the situation.
The Muslim Brotherhood got into office by lying about its agenda and with a strong organization that took advantage of the US’s demand that elections be held before other political organizations were ready. It is a good thing, and consistent with traditional American values, that the military took over and is fighting the Muslim Brotherhood.
It was not a military coup. The people demanded that the military step in.
A military coup means the military runs the government. They didn’t and aren’t.
It might have made some sense if Congress had acted when Obama staged his ILLEGAL war against Kaddafi, or when he pushed hard to INSTALL the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
I agree that we should gradually back out of aid to Egypt, but not in response to a popular removal of the Muslim Brotherhood from power after they broke and suspended the laws of Egypt and conspired in church burnings and murders of Coptic Christians.
Sorry, but I’m not really a big fan of Cruz’s. He’s picked up the conservative baton that Marco Rubio dropped. And he’s better than Rubio. But I don’t think either one of them is ready for prime time.
I am not going to agree with either Rand or Paul here, and that fact is just annoying me to no end.
Is everyone so much in love with the Islamists and with terrorism that they all turn into political whores?
An obvious Military coup? We should shut the heck up right now, about our “obvious military coup”.
I am listening to Egyptian TV and it is not obvious to them - they want the OBVIOUS terrorism to stop killing their country. How do we know more about the Egyptian system than the Egyptians do?
WHO is the power behind this love and enabling of Islam in our world?
Can no one stand up and speak the truth in our country anymore?
I can’t agree with either Cruz OR Rand Paul. :)
Cruz is on the wrong side, again. This guy is a Rino.
Then he and others should go write a new law more suitable to our national interests IMHO. We should actually have the moral courage,to not just stand by some law for the law’s sake...but to write foreign policy laws for our national security’s sake. Our national security interests are in keeping the Suez Canal open, Egyptian peace with Israel and a stable regime. Morsi and the MB were doing none of those things....And in fact had threatened all of the above.
We should be coming out full throttle in support of the Egyptian military to restore order and crush the MB. What is wrong with just coming out in support of crushing a murderous, fascist ideology like the MB?
I love Cruz and Rand Paul, but this kind of rhetoric will only serve to give Obama cover in his feckless and dangerous foreign policy IMHO.
You make a good point about the lack of protection of the Christians, but you are way off base on the rest. You are comparing apples and oranges by equating the Muslim Brotherhood with the Tea Party for the sake of a hypothetical domestic argument? The Muslim Brotherhood and AQ are our enemies..PERIOD..and we should support any regime that would crush them. The left and Obama are in bed with the MB!! How is that even comparable to those of us who advocate crushing them?
Sorry. That is just not true. The democratically elected government was overthrown in an absolute Coup d’ eTat by the military on a pretense of something I can’t figure out and during the Morsi backed demonstrations to stop the coup, The Military started shooting THOUSANDS OF DEMONSTRATORS ( killing 700)!! This is exactly what Mubarak was murdered for doing. This is why Saddam Hussein was executed (for killing his own people). Where is the outrage? Where is Hillary when we need her ( this falls on her as a result horrible complicity in removing our friend Mubarak, to begin with. But lets don’t just avert our gaze from the atrocities against humanity now being meted out by the Egyptian military against their own people. What a disaster.

A short overview what has happened in Egypt.
- Obama, took advantage of Egypt instability by helping push Mabarak out power.
- Egypt had a power vacuum that would be filled by the most organized group.
- Obama understood that the Muslim brotherhood would be that organization that would take power. Obama wanted them in power. Muslim Brotherhood goals are the destruction of Israel and to export International terrorism under the guise of Islam.
- The overwhelming Egyptian majority found that the Muslim Brotherhood were pushing them toward the hard ideology of Sharia law.
- The people revolted against the corrupt, Muslim Brotherhood government.
A short conclusion: the Muslim Brotherhood who were thrown out of power are a threat to Western Nations and Israel.
I would suspect that is because you seem to think that what has happened in Egypt is because of a violent Military overthrow of a legit government-ie a coup.
A military coup means the military runs the government. They didnt and arent.
The Egyptian military stepped in and ousted the Muslim Brotherhood because the Brotherhood focused solely on establishing an Islamic Fundamentalist dictatorship, consolidating their power and destroying their enemies.
Morsi totally ignored anything that had to do with actually running the country and rapidly ran Egypt, a poor country with little margin for mismanagement, into the ground.
By the time the Military took over, Egypt was broke and had their food reserves run down to less than two months before they were gone, at which time Egypt would have been at major risk for mass starvation.
The military took over and secured about 10 billion in funding from the Oil States to buy food and float the country to prevent the looming catastrophe of mass starvation.
Either we stand for the rule law or we don’t. Aid is the same situation and in this case, I’m predicting a brotherhood run government in the future and we will be the ones who funded it.
Just this morning I saw on the street interviews on the BBC. Aside from the academics, most of the interviewees said they supported ousting Morsi but didn’t support killing their “Muslim Brothers”. The ground will shift again and we would do well to stand somewhere else.
The only aid we should offer is safe haven for the Christians.
Before we agree with Cruz’s remark, we ought to ask ourselves how FDR should have reacted if the German army, after Hitler gained full power shortly after the Reichstag fire, had deposed him and the Nazis. Just look at the MB. Whether it “won” a so-called election or not, it’s still a totalitarian horror that’s the nearest thing to the Nazi party and needs to be mercilessly eliminated, just as the Nazis were. The Mahdi’s sin isn’t his present dithering; it’s that he initially supported and enabled the MB in it’s seizure of power.
Cruz has done a 180, so it’s not mere ignorance he changed his tune. I am totally sickened by his support of the MB. WTH????
Two paragraphs of the July 3 article are below, the whole article is worth reading. He’s done a 180. Threats? Bribes? I do not get it!!!!!!
Our Friend in Cairo
Why does President Barack Obama persist in supporting Mohamed Morsy and not the protesters?
BY TED CRUZ | JULY 3, 2013
On Sunday, June 30, millions of Egyptians turned out to protest President Mohamed Morsy and his Muslim Brotherhood-dominated regime. Fed up with his disastrous economic mismanagement and systematic disregard for constitutional freedoms, the Egyptian people took to the streets to demand his resignation. “Leave! Leave!” they chanted in what may have been the largest demonstration in the history of the Middle East — if not the world.
In what has to be one of the most stunning diplomatic failures in recent memory, the United States is — in both perception and reality — entrenched as the partner of a repressive, Islamist regime and the enemy of the secular, pro-democracy opposition.
[Hat tip to maggief for posting that on the Live Egypt thread this morning.]
Human Events article
"Egyptians enraged by U.S. outreach to Muslim Brotherhood"
I frankly don’t care what you suspect. We all are responsible for ourselves when we face our maker.
“Im predicting a brotherhood run government in the future and we will be the ones who funded it.”
What are you even talking about? Obama already helped install the MB in Egypt...lol. They were running the country after Obama helped remove Mubarak for cryin out loud! Did you miss the biggest demonstration in world history by the people in Egypt to remove Morsi and MB from power a few weeks ago? The military did what the people asked..they removed MB from power.
??WHAT in the world? You asked me a question and I answered. You are awfully defensive.
If you think that conservatives are not answering you, and want to know what I would guess the reason is for that, I will tell you IMO, it is most likely because they have surmised you don’t understand the situation and it isn’t worth their time.
If you didn’t want my opinion, why would you ask me? If you believe that God is telling you to speak out and claim that what has happened in Egypt is a military coup- then you should obey. Most people are not going to agree with you, so handle it with some grace, ok?
And you never did answer the question.
You may go now. LOL
Whatever you think of the Muslim Brotherhood, it was an overthrow by the military which we subsidize of a democratically elected government. We shouldn’t send them one damn cent....it’s the law. Besides that, it turns US rhetoric of democracy into a deadly farcee.
If Obama suspended the Bill of Rights and imposed Sharia Law, it would be up to the HOR to impeach him. It's not a good parallel, because in Egypt Morsi was elected because the voters wanted a country more in line with Muslim law.
That's the problem with just handing people free elections for our own benefit. The results may not go our way.
What is disgusting is Cruz siding with 0bastard and the MB.
I’m not surprised Rand Paul did, like father/like son.
I do not see his statement as ‘supporting’ the MB. It is not time to go that far in sorting out his statements IMHO. I have read both articles and it appears to me, that while his stance is conflicting, it is not supporting the MB at all.
There are elements in the Egyptian military that probably concern some right now. That is all I can figure.
0bastard sent the MB 8 billion dollars. Egypt’s election that out Morsi as head was no cleaner than the 2012 that gave 0bastard a second term.
Tainted to the max. Election fraud, IRS going after conservative groups, etc.
Neither election was the least bit clean.
A Rino...that’s interesting. Rinos are the ones telling Cruz to be quiet. Cruz is any thing but a Rino. He is a thorn in the sides of the Rinos.
What amazes me is how many people on FR remain ignorant of what is actually going on in Egypt.
Too lazy to read the Live Egypt thread? Too many linked articles strain the brain?
The many signs held by anti-Morsi demonstrators over the weeks made it very clear it is 0bastard and his MB supporting regime they hate, NOT the American people.
So Cruz is outraged because the Egyptian people don’t want a US president giving $ and support to the MB.
What happened to Cruz? Threatened? Bribed? Or just gone native in deecee?
Our politicos in government are shortsighted and are being Dumb.
The efforts here of the Muslim Brotherhood again trying to take direct power in Egypt will fail.
If the United States continue in their course of actions and words could very well push the Egyptians towards China and Russia.
In the end, the U.S. will lose out in power and ‘sphere of influence’ with Egypt that has consequence as a whole for the Middle East.
Well, he’s not as outfront as Paul (who whined about the miltary tanks running over innocent people), but now he’s calling it a “coup” and he was calling it democratic uprising 6 weeks ago. He’s really changed his tune.
I’m sorry, I have to disagree with Ted.
We shouldn’t have been giving them as much aid in the first place, and certainly shouldn’t have given Egypt a bunch of F16’s as the MB gained power and started to show their colors.
From my point of view, the MB was a political coup; this is a counter-coup, or in the language of the State Department, a “reset.”
I don't know as of yet. Haven't given it a good look yet.
IMHO that is one of 0bastard’s handlers goals. If they couldn’t get the MB to remain in power (best plan), then at least Putin would gain influence, which he obviously is, in Egypt.
Sort of like “If we (MB/jihadis) can’t have Egypt, then might as well have Russia influence it”.
Anything to reduce the influence of the US. Sort of a fall back plan.
