Heavy smoke is pouring from the Queensboro bridge in New York City.

A truck fire on the Queensboro Bridge has shut down traffic in both directions.
FDNY was called to the lower level of the bridge at 11:08 a.m. for an all-hands, vehicle fire, fire officials told the Daily News.

Ah, yes I remember the Queensboro. Years ago when I had a delivery business I HATED having to cross that bridge. Driving on the approach roads on either side of it is a big time PITA. OTOH, This bridge was an amazing engineering feat when it was constructed in the early 1900’s.
And then there is that voice

The Pulaski Skyway connecting Newark & Jersey City is similar; won all kinds of awards when it was built (when few people had cars), but now is just a disaster. I was stuck in traffic on it years ago; there was a car on fire in the right lane, people squeezing past in the left, and no shoulder. They have exit ramps from the fast lane as well.
A mess.

Upgrades and expansions are called for throughout the region, but too many people are reflexively anti-infrastructure.
I think taxpayers don’t mind if there is a purpose and the cost is shared by all; if the infrastructure of a welfare hive or an illegal enclave is crumbling, taxpayers feel no responsibility towards addressing it (and I agree - they already feed, house, clothe, and school the inhabitants).
Here in NJ most residents feel no urgency about addressing the shore because they can’t relate to places that have a six-month fiscal year that results in pizza costing $5 per slice. Some of the beaches futher north along the shore haven’t seen am American taxpayer in years.
