Not entirely the union's fault, although I'm not lettig them off as fault-free. To manage the program, Boeing brought in some Ford executives to manage the program. A friend of mine, a former CEO of a local firm, interviewed for a management position on the project. He didn't get it. He told them they were treating it as a "just in time" project when it should really be treated as a "six sigma" project. He was right.

Rename the plane to the nightmareliner.
I used to laugh when McDonnald brought it its 2 engine flying cigar and dubbed it the M-80. I don’t think planes should be named after fireworks but what do I know. So, perhaps in reverse fashion, this one is the nightmareliner.

"Boeing brought in some Ford executives to manage the program."
Going the other way seemed to work (Alan Mulally). An airliner is more complex and lower volume and you sell the prototypes. Building parts for it worldwide with more vendors than Boeing had managed previously is a recipe for trouble.

Some travel agent I used to employ called them the M-80, perhaps the term was interchangable? Yeah, the M-80 I had as a kid worked fine, right out of the box. Went to Mexico one time and found some M-240s and managed to get them over the border...they really worked fine, would actually nudge a buick from 25 feet!

Looks like we need to change the name from Dreamliner to Nightmareliner.

I don’t wanna sit in one of these planes. Just imagine a birdstrike into a engine during take off and the fire supression blows out the wrong engine. A nightmare. These birds should get grounded until they checked and fixed every 787 ever built.
