Ohio Man Orders Empty Gun Safe, Finds 300 Pounds of Pot Inside 8:35AM Saturday August 17, 2013

e 8:35AM Saturday August 17, 2013 )

(SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio) --An Ohio man expected the gun safe he ordered online to be empty, police said.

But instead, he found $425,000-worth of tightly wrapped marijuana bricks inside.

“I’ve been in law enforcement for 47 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Shelby County, Ohio, Sheriff John L. Lenhart said. ”It’s quite effective if you think about it: wrapped airtight to withstand high temperatures. Drug-sniffing dogs probably couldn’t smell it.”

It turned out the gun safes were manufactured by Champion Safe Co. in Nogales, Mexico, packaged by local inmates and shipped north, police said.

“Someplace between Mexico and the warehouse in Northern Ohio, the drugs got mixed up and put in the wrong safe and got delivered to the wrong person,” Lenhart said.

Police hope to question a driver for Conway Inc., the truck company they said Champion hired to move the 25 to 30 gun safes to a warehouse in Ohio for local distribution. But they have not been able to find the driver, officials said.

“Not only are we looking for him,” Lenhart said, “but the bad guys are, too.”

That could be a problem for whoever screwed up the shipment, police said, but not for the anonymous northern Ohio man who, in early June, found 10 bales of pot tightly bound inside the safe he had ordered for $1,700. Police believe the man who got the 1,000-pound, 6-foot-tall safe had nothing to do with the drug shipment and was only expecting to find an empty space where he could store 24 long rifles and a dozen shotguns.

No thanks. If the dealers tracked it to your house your entire family would be at risk.

A glaring example of one reason behind the big push to allow Mexican trucks to drive into the US and deliver directly to US distribution facilities.

? You really thought they needed, or need, an excuse? All they have to do is decide whether or not you said something online that was unflattering to LEOs, the force, wiener-holder or the anointed won, etc. and your name will anonymously be leaked and added to the terrorista and/or no-fly list.

What an excuse to don those Jackbooted ninja outfits and masks so as to safely SS-Stormtrooper-ize your home and kill some pet dogs. Or possibly a hissy cat.

I hope he gets his gun safe back. How many years will it sit in the evidence room collecting dust before a cop decides it’d look nice in his man cave?

Oh, he’ll get it back if he satisfactorily answers the question of exactly why he needs 24 long guns and a dozen shotguns! /sarcasm;)

In all seriousness, you do know that when the original “assassins” existed back in time in the middle east, tortoises were commonly carried as one of their tools to stealthily enter homes, yes?

You’re kidding ? - I’ve read massive amounts of history but never came upon that one. Gonna have to do some research, sounds interesting....

Yar. Dead serious. That, a candle, and a bag of sand were stock-in-trade.

And even back then, although they did not know it as such, they followed closely the famed Gibbs' Rule #9.

Youre torturing me. You’ve got to refer some more specific reading material to me. Read many books on the Ottomans, Turks, Muslim Spain, North African history, loads of WW1 but have not run across “G Rule 9, sneaky turtles, or candles in bags of sand. “

Sounds like you’ve got some interesting sources? Or you could just explain the above and forgo me heading blindly in doing web searches using words like “covert turtles” or Candles and bags of sand”

I will search for “G Rule 9” but you could sure spare a curious old man some time by pointing me in the right direction.

Ah, I found and do follow G Rule 9 ! However I use my blade mostly for cleaning my nails these days. Nice set of rules for future reference though

I do have access to a turtle, sand and candles. Ready for my covert mission but need a hint how to utilize these formadible tools.

You need the tortoise to carry the candle. One would light the candle then put a couple of drops of the candle drippings on the tortoise to hold it in place, then point it towards the direction you wanted it to go, generally down a hallway.

The tortoise would make its way through the domicile and if no one came out to investigate then one could proceed further and begin exploring the area(s). Light coatings of sand were tossed out to either side as one progressed so as to provide a simple audible warning if someone began walking on the floor towards the investigating party. Some would use twigs or other lightweight items, but I consider twigs and leaves to be too much noisier setting out to warrent their useage.

One could then search then use the tortoise-candle on the way out to avoid stepping on the sand (you DID leave a safe path out, right?) and leave with no one the wiser

Thanks for your time.

“I would’ve quietly disposed of the stuff and NEVER told anyone.

I ain’t telling the gub’ment I was buying a gun safe and I certainly would never want it in their records that 300lbs of weed had been shipped to my house.”

And in that situation what if the DEA happened to be tracking the shipment that ended up at your house? You might still be behind bars fighting your arrest.

Did you ever get around to attempting the candle-on-a-tortoise technique I mentioned here? *grin*

Nostalgia bump...

Thx for the nostalga bump and hope your hallways have been safe from intruders.

I’m so harmless I’ve not yet had need for the good info you provided but my dog did find a turtle about 3 weeks ago in one of our apple orchards of all places.

Now we have had a problem with the homeless invading our property but have been able to find them w out turtle help.
Anyway we released the turtle can-dle-less near our lower pond but haven’t seen since.
Had dinner with the wealthy neighbor last week and he shared he purchased a bunch of turtles for his ponds, matching the description of the one I (actually my dogs) found.
Remembering your turtle lesson I inquired why he had bought the turltes.

He likes them was his excuse but we now have him on our watch list mainly though because he has excellent wine at his house.

Would send a picture of the cute little turlte we found but don’t know how to add to this format.

So have you been doing any covert operations lately?

Not I. *grin* The most I have been up to is being adopted by some of the neighborhood cats who after I started feeding one decided that I should share with more than one.

They don’t look like they are starving, but you should hear them in the afternoon when I come out for their semi-regular daily feedings.

Now I worry about them being stuck outdoors overnights, since it is already dropping down to the teens with the days not much warmer. Been thinking of putting together an apartment-style “doghouse” for them but don’t know what the landlord would say.

I know, technically it would be a ‘cathouse’ but I wanted to avoid the term for obvious reasons. *smile*

Sounds like cat #1 is a community organizer and the others just simple Felinecrats. That you are doing your care giving with your own money as directed by you is commendable however the landlords point of view could go either way.. but he may have a soft spot for cathouses.
Good luck on your project. Be sure to check w your local building dept so they can collect some fees and oversee your technical skills
