It sounds like a way for the Muslim brotherhood to raise funds. I am certain that there are enough unscrupulous collectors out there who would play a lot of money for artifacts, and don’t care about provenance.

I don’t any museum was looted in the Watt’s riots and I know they weren’t in the Rodney King riots. Most of both riots were in predominantly black areas with the King riot being very much in K-Town {Koreatown].
Riots everywhere involve looting.
Someone upthread noted the riots in Baghdad involving looting antiquities.
Makes me ill to see relics of antiquity trashed like that. Obviously, there is no regard for their ancestral heritage.
I can also imagine that people in Cairo and surrounding are going hungry at this point. They’ve lost it all. What an absolute mess. Just so sad.
Are you thinking of 1965? As far as I know, no museums were looted in that disturbance, although rioters trashed the Willowbrook branch of the Los Angeles County Library.
Yeah, it’s easy to forget how it all breaks down under these circumstances. No trash pick up, no mail, often water, gasoline, electricity breakdown.

IIRC, the Alexandrine library has burned at least three times, each time at the hands of Muslim conquerors who declared the Koran to be the only book the world needed, and as noted, to erase evidence of earlier cultures.
