The Canadian military has been secretly test-driving a $620,000 stealth snowmobile in its quest to quietly whisk troops on clandestine operations in the Arctic.

The Canadian Press has learned that soldiers have taken the new hybrid-electric snowmobile prototype on trial runs to evaluate features such as speed, noise level, battery endurance and acceleration.

The Department of National Defence even has a nickname for its cutting-edge, covert tool: “Loki,” after the “mythological Norse shape-shifting god.”

I know it's a hybrid, but a battery's biggest enemy is cold.
Sargent Preston of the Yukon used a dogsled and team led by his faithful lead dog King, King of the Huskies!
Sponsored by Puffed Wheat, the only cereal shot from guns!
Anyone else remember that show? It's pretty old.

Because Li batteries work so well in sub zero (F/C) temperatures.

Limtited range of 100 yards to 1 mile, depending on temperature, snow depth, snow texture, rider weight, moon phase, incline and mood of the rider.

Rumor has it that they are stripped down Chevy Volts. Government Motors is modifying them as snowmobiles as they can’t be sold as automobiles.

I've been doing a little digging. We're talking 50-100 miles per engagement - or more, but it's still under development. I had a chat with the local conservative radio talk show host this afternoon. He'd heard about that and we had quite some time joking about it.

But we've also had discussion about things like the War of 1812. This is the anniversary of when a bunch of drunken Nova Scotians sailed on down to Washington DC and burned down much of Washington and a whole bunch of the White House. They ran out of rum, and not liking corn whisky, said to perdition with it all and sailed on back to where the spirits were more to their taste.
