Senator Cruz may have to wait eight months to stop being Canadian

OTTAWA - U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who says he recently discovered he is likely a Canadian, must win security clearance from Canada's spy agency, fill out a four-page form and then wait up to eight months to sever his ties to America's northern neighbor.

Cruz, a Texas Republican who has fueled speculation that he may run for president in 2016, was born in Canada, which automatically makes him a citizen. On Monday he offered to renounce that citizenship. ...

People giving up Canadian citizenship must prove they are or will become a citizen of another country, do not live in Canada and are not a security threat. They must also explain in writing why they do not want to be a Canadian anymore.

A nonrefundable C$100 ($96) fee is payable in advance.

"It's very, very uncommon ... . I've been practicing 26 years and I don't think I've ever seen anybody renounce it," said Guidy Mamann, an immigration lawyer with Toronto law firm Mamann, Sandaluk & Kingwell.

I am betting the liberal senators are looking through the laws right now to see if this could be used to “un-seat” Ted Cruz from the senate....

There is really no need for him to renounce his Canadian citizenship. Canada decides for itself who it wishes to regard as a Canadian citizen. It is none of our business what they do. It is our business to pick a president and we should determine eligibility based upon our laws. In my opinion, Cruz is a natural born citizen because he was a U.S. citizen at birth. Whether Canada decides it wants to view him as a citizen is none of my business. Our choice of a president should be based upon our law and not the law of Canada.

Don’t quote me on this but I believe the law that makes you a Canadian citizen upon birth was not enacted until 1977.

I’m missing something. If he has American citizenship, why does he think its necessary to renounce his Canadian citizenship?

The last Canadian to renounce his citizenship was Conrad Black, who did so because the Prime Minister told the Queen that it was illegal for a Canadian to accept an appointment to the House of Lords (it never was).

To all- please ping me to Canadian topics.

Canada Ping!

Funny.

It took the same amount of time for the RCMP to process my security clearance to submit to the US Citizenship office back in canada, as a prerequisite for a green card.

It’s Ok Ted, as you probably know we sell the Shiner right next to the Molson here in Texas. I’m in the fan club either way.

1947, actually. Prior to this there were no Canadian citizens, we were all British Subjects. IIRC In 1977 the law was changed so that we are no longer British Subjects.

After Peter Jennings took the oath to become a US citizen, he bragged to friends that he ALSO retained his Canadian citizenship. I’m sure he took the oath simply to vote against GW Bush.

A Reuters article.

This is all just setting the stage for the GOP primaries.

The DNC & MSM know how fickle conservatives are with their nominee.

if Cruz is leading the primary polling, it will be used to divide conservative support, allowing someone like Christie to walk away with the nomination.

They did it to us last year, but you can already see the divisions starting.
