An inmate who escaped from an Iowa prison was shot dead by 71-year-old homeowner on Tuesday after a four-hour hostage ordeal, according to local media reports.
The escaped convict, Rodney Long, had eluded officers trying to track him down for four days before he broke into the Bedford home of Jerome Mauderly, a retired prison guard, and his wife Carolyn Mauderly at about 10:15 p.m. on Monday night, according to the Daily Iowegian.
Long disabled the phones in the Mauderlys' small one-story home in a rural area next to cornfields, and was suspected of trying to gather supplies to help in his escape, the Des Moines Register reported.
But after four hours as a hostage Jerome Mauderly had had enough and retrieved his shotgun, police said.

Gee, seems they had a blast.
All’s well that ends well...
Burn in hell...buh bye....
Where did the escapee get his gun? Not at a gun show, I’ll bet.
This is the story that should be followed up on. The man was dangerous and I’m glad he’s dead, forever.
The .38 in the cookie jar or bread bin was the death of him..
Probably making the guy a sandwitch.. Lead & meatloaf on rye..
I just like the sound of that statement, especially the shotgun part, hope it was a pump 12 gauge.
AND think of the tax savings!..this is a GOOD goood GOOD turn of events we all love happy endings....woo and hoo...already..no more 3 hots and a cot on the taxpayer’s dime criminal..or should i say LATE criminal..
Of all the hostages he could have taken, he picked a retired prison guard.
And he picked a man too old for a fist fight. Never take an old man hostage!
If this were the United Kingdom, the homeowner would have been arrested. Given this occurred in the United States, I’m surprised he wasn’t shot...
Where did the escapee get his gun? Not at a gun show, Ill bet.
Suddenly, the national leftist extremist "news" media are too busy to wonder. It's time to "move on" to some Hollywood tart's latest misadventures or some Marxist politician's snide, simpering accusations or some poor, pitiful, helpless illegal alien's needless suffering at the hands of the Republicans.
Well that narrows it down a bit....
I don’t think the last paragraph in the story (in the link) could possibly be more confusing. Keep up those high journalistic standards, NBC.
Another very good reason not to have all your guns in a safe locked up away from the ammo.
Yes. The last two paragraphs belong way up near the top of the article.
It's one of those, "Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention... " stories.
He escaped Friday and stole the gun from a home over the weekend.
This happened very close to where I live. I work in the town (Clarinda) where he escaped. People were quite frightened, particularly after he shot the officer. I was fairly certain that he would likely not make it and it may well be at the hands of a citizen. Most people in rural Iowa are armed. I don’t know these folks personally but I hear that he not only was a prison guard but an accomplished hunter. We all need to pray for them. I’m sure it was a horrific ordeal.
One should never be more than 10 feet from a gun. Locked up in a safe or in a back room does you no good if and when the BG’s kick in the front door.
