The man who brought The Beatles to America and sparked the 'British Invasion' has died.
Music promoter Sid Bernstein has passed away today, aged 95.
Bernstein got the Fab Four their gig at Carnegie Hall in New York after their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 and Bernstein also booked them at Shea Stadium.
Sam Leach, who promoted the Beatles in the UK, paid tribute to Bernstein.
He said: "He was like my equivalent in America.
He brought the Beatles to America and he was very proud of the part he played in their amazing story.
Sid has left a great legacy. We were good friends and he was a really great guy.
"He was the nicest guy in showbiz and he was not like the ruthless promoters you get nowadays. He loved what he did and he was very genuine. He was the best promoter in New York."
Bernstein also organised concerts for Frank Sinatra, Lenny Kravitz and Jimi Hendrix.
More of a Stones man?
I saw a tv piece a few years back about the influence the Beatles had in breaking up the Soviet Empire . . . seriously, that was the thesis of the documentary that the kids in the Soviet Union were listening to the Beatles through underground clubs and the black market, and that was the impetus for the people’s demand for more freedom. I don’t buy it but it was interesting.
That sure is a stretch.
As to another post about Hendrix being controlled by the mob, I dont think the mob held any sway over Jimi but they probably had manager Mike Jeffries by the gonads. Jeffrey died under mysterious circumstances not long after Jimis death, along with Jimis whacked out girlfriend Devon wilson.
Elvis actually Served in Uniform after he got his Draft Notice. Franky Conived his way out of serving(4-F for a “Punctured” Eardrum).
Even more than that a Kinks (the band that should be heaped with almost every praise given the Beatles) man.
Hey, USNV, if every “performer” “BRAINLESS BROADS (go) NUTS over” died, there wouldn’t be any performers.
I can attest to that. I was a kid back in the USSR.
Shea stadium is history now too, plowed over.
It was built in mid 1960s for the World Fair in Flushing NY.
I have seen quite a few idiotic notions on the Internet. Yours belongs in the Hall of Fame.
Suffolk Downs? With The Ronettes? A dime to ride the Blue Line to see them? Where was I??? Why wasn't *I* there??
I’ll never understand why TIME or APPLE Records or whomever has rights has never put together the definitive long form multipart documentary of the Beatles. It would earn tons of money, old clips, concert video etc.
I’ve seen a handful of Beatles documentaries but never a really comprehensive one - can’t believe it’s never been done.
Didn’t Steven Tyler say Aerosmith was funded with mob money?
Mad at the Beatles for not serving in the U.S. Military then?
From what I have seen they didn’t serve in Her Majesty’s Military either. Please correct me if I am wrong?
No they did not. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?
Ray Davies wrote some great songs but didn’t know a lot of chords.
But were they *required* to serve? My understand is that Britain had a draft that was similar to ours but they repealed it long ago.I was subject to the draft and,as a result,I served...reluctantly.Many in this country who weren't subject to a draft have served and they are to be commended. If the Beatles somehow "dodged" their draft then that's noteworthy.Otherwise, maybe not.
