The stated purpose for the Crusades was just: it was no more "offensive" than the Allies landing at Normandy was offensive. Islam had forcibly occupied and subjugated 2/3 of historic Christendom, and the Christian Emperor (in Constantinople) had appealed to the Pope (in Rome) to mobilize the West and come to their rescue.

Their purpose was to support fellow Christians and to secure the holy places from destruction.

The First Crusade --- the only one out of seven which was reasonably successful --- did push back the Islamic aggressors and secure the Holy Places.

However, the way the warfare was conducted was often horrible. Great saints to who preached crusades (e.g. St Bernard of Clairvaux, who promoted the Second Crusade) came to regret it as they saw the senseless massacres mount; during the Fourth Crusade, the whole shootin' match was excommunicated by the Pope. Twice, I believe.

So you could say I heartily believe in Crusades in theory. But not in practice.
