Notre Dame University announced Thursday it will begin admitting illegal immigrants to the school and will provide them with financial aid, saying the move will "strengthen" the student body.
The university had never had an official ban on illegal immigrants but Inside Higher Ed reported the school treated them as international students and required them to have student visas — which effectively served as a bar.
"We will strengthen our incoming class and give deserving young people the chance for a Notre Dame education," Don Bishop, associate vice president for undergraduate enrollment, said in a statement announcing the policy.
The university also said it "is committed to meeting the full demonstrated financial need for all admitted students." Illegal immigrants are not eligible for federal student aid, but the university's announcement signals that Notre Dame would make up the difference between the cost and what the student and his or her family can afford.

No, they cannot. Being a private institution doesn't give you the privelege or power to aid and abet law-breakers.

The catechism of the Catholic Church states that no one living in Zny country should violate sovereignty for the sake of misguided charity or the host country will suffer financially and ultimately be unable to provide for it’s own citizens as well as the noncitizen ii grants

I was there to see Ronald Reagan speak at the 1981 commencement and in March of 1988. Since my graduation 25 years ago, I see how they have evolved away from both Catholic tradition and sound judgement. Of late, they have never ceased to disappoint.

Is this the same way that illegal immigrants have "strengthened" the US southwest by turning what were once normal communities into dirty third world barrios and colonias? I think I'll pass on Notre Dame's version of the strength through joy program.

my very bright daughter who is a junior at a top 50 catholic school and has a GPA of 3.9 will not even be considering notre dame.
there are some very nice small catholic colleges that are true to church teachings charge less tuition, and provide a better education.
Soon even the prestige associated with the name “Notre Dame” will fade and be meaningless...
They’re listening to the bishops, always a big mistake. Or trying to be first in line when 0bama’s new “ratings” kick in.
That may be logical so far as it goes, but what about the impact of the policy on students who are citizens or legal immigrants with proper student visas? The cost of educating the illegal immigrants will fall involuntarily on the former while the latter will continue to have to bear considerable time and cost burdens to maintain their legal status in the U.S. Meanwhile, the good Jesuit fathers will be throwing their shoulders out patting themselves on the back for so beigh so good and committed to social justice. Again, illegal immigrants are benefiting from having committed a serious crime: unlawfully entering a foreign country. This is wrong is so many ways and it grieves me terribly that my church not only condones this illegal behavior but actively and sanctimoniously encourages it.
I have a professing catholic friend that is a professor at Notre Dame supports marriage equality. She should be fired.
