Posted on 08/24/2013 6:25:11 AM PDT by Innovative
The Obama administration had a grand strategy in the Middle East. It was well intentioned, carefully crafted and consistently pursued.
Unfortunately, it failed.
The plan was simple but elegant: The U.S. would work with moderate Islamist groups like Turkey's AK Party and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood to make the Middle East more democratic.
President Obama (whom I voted for in 2008) and his team hoped that the success of the new grand strategy would demonstrate once and for all that liberal Democrats were capable stewards of American foreign policy.
... it appears that the White House made five big miscalculations about the Middle East. It misread the political maturity and capability of the Islamist groups it supported; ....

The author is still characterizing the Muslim Brotherhood as "moderate"... but is recognizing the resurgence of terrorism as direct result of Obama's policies.
But he is still under the impression that it was just naivite on Obama's part... rather than a deliberate strategy.
The phrase "moderate Islam" is an oxymoron.
Yup, when they claim the MB is moderate they have completely jumped the shark....Obma’s entire presidential legacy now hangs with Obamacare since his foreign policy is in tatters, his economic recovery is weaker than GWB’s recession, the explosive increase in national debt, lawless behavior by the executive branch among other things to deny property rights to bondholders.
Jimmy Carter is feeling a bit better about his legacy these days since he can no longer be looked at as one of the worst Presidents in our nation’s history.
Reminds me of a meme I saw.
The oceans are salty because of the tears of misunderstood sharks who just want to cuddle.
Nothing the Obama gang does is by accident. They know the result that will occur. It’s the minions that don’t. Obamacare will fail because it was designed to fail. Obama’s economic recovery plans will fail because they are designed to fail. Same goes for education, energy, etc... As will all I mentioned, his Middle East diplomacy was also designed to fail.
All the failures are from the point of view of what is good for the USA. If you look from the point of as an enemy of the USA, Obama has been brilliantly successful.
Obama has convinced a large segment of the population to become dependent on the government for basic needs. He has convinced the people to destroy the best healthcare system in the world. He has weakened out stature in the world with out adversaries and alienated our allies. He has convinced people to abandoned our energy wealth and stay dependent on terrorist nations for our oil. Education has been replaced by communist indoctrination. From the point of view that Obama is an enemy with the mission of destroying the US, he has been successful.
>> President Obama (whom I voted for in 2008)
stop. I think I’ve seen what I need to see.
First ignorant miscalculation: there are no moderate Islamists. No moderate Muslims. Read the Koran. Moderate is not in there. Jihad is in there. There is no moderate Jihad. All Christians and Jews have an explicit death sentence. How can that be moderate. Read it!
Walter Russell Mead is personally an idiot.
The drooling nose picking kind.
In our briefings from S2 in the mid 1980s the Muslim Brotherhood was at the very top of the Egyptian terrorist lists. They were machine gunning bus loads of tourists and bombing hotels. They were never a moderate anything.
author is delusional.
Arif Alikhan, assistant secretary of Homeland Security for policy development;
Mohammed Elibiary, a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council;
Rashad Hussain, the U.S. special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference;
Salam al-Marayati, co-founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC);
Imam Mohamed Magid, president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA);
Eboo Patel, a member of President Obamas Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships.
Everyday this berserk jerk has his filthy hands on the levers of OUR govt, is another attack against Western Civilization. Islam is all about hatred and triumphalism. Only God knows what Obomba and his fanatical appointees are plotting against Chrisian America behind closed doors.
THIS IS OBABO ON EGYPT TODAY: As the savage Muslim Brotherhood burned down 63 Egyptian churches and paraded nuns through the streets to humiliate them, Obama took to the microphone from a golf course in exclusive Martha's Vineyard where he was vacationing, to clarify America's perspective. Here we reexamine his "inspiring" words:
"America cannot determine the future of Egypt. That's a task for the Egyptian people. We don't take sides with any particular party or political figure. I know it's tempting inside of Egypt to blame the United States or the West or some other outside actor for what's gone wrong."
THIS WAS OBABO ON EGYPT IN 2009:
Obama figured he was working his magic, sucking-up bigtime in a speech in Cairo----where he apologized for America's historical role in the Middle East. Obama calculatedly set the stage for the Egyptian president's overthrow by the mob.
When the worst-case scenario happened, when Obama's personal choice---Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Morsi, was elected president----Obama sap-happily sent his secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, to Cairo to personally kiss-up to Morsi---(perhaps at that time hatching their plans to destroy Westen civilization in compliance w/ Muslim Brotherhood dictates?).
Obama had calculatedly added a treacherous, ill-advised component to US foreign policy----sucking up to the very people who want to kill Americans and destroy American churches.
Obama was prostrate in obeisance before Muslim leaders---portraying teeming Muslim majorities in Egypt as "victims" of Western colonialism and Cold War policies, then stupidly promoted democracy among conflicting cultures w/ thousands of years of religious and territorial factionalism.
"The relationship between Islam and the West includes centuries of coexistence and cooperation, but also conflict and religious wars," Obama said in the June 2009 speech in Cairo. "More recently, tension has been fed by colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies, without regard to their own aspirations."
Fast forward to 2013: in the past 4-5 days, in a sustained volley of hate-fueled violence, the savage Muslim Brotherhood torched Egyptian churches, Christian homes and businesses. Obama ignored the bloodbath and spent the crisis dining out, golfing, power-partying, and vacationing in exclusive Marthas Vineyard on the taxpayers' dime.
The only way that democracy is going to work in the middle east is to have it imposed from outside (Japan after WWII) or the model that Saudi Arabia (I know, I’m surprised too) has started following. The Saudis are allowing voting in local elections and they say they will gradually allow votes in more important elections. I’m sure they do not intend elections for the executive leadership of the country but democracy has a way of expanding itself.
“If you look from the point of as an enemy of the USA, Obama has been brilliantly successful.”
Actually, Mead misses the first and fundamental misconception of the President. He states:
“The plan was simple but elegant: The U.S. would work with moderate Islamist groups like Turkey’s AK Party and Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood to make the Middle East more democratic.”
The mistake in the article is the word “moderate.” Or perhaps not a mistake. Much of Obama’s foreign policy seems to be based on the idea that it would be a good idea for the middle east to be ruled by hardcore Islamist dictators, so long as they have the figleaf of one election—kind of the Allende/Chavez model. The author continues:
“With the advantages of hindsight, it appears that the White House made five big miscalculations about the Middle East. It misread the political maturity and capability of the Islamist groups it supported . . . “
The problem was not political maturity or capability. The MB has been quite capable at all things important to it—seizing power and imposing an Islamic State. It should have worked—they had Obama on their side with the threat (now underway) to cut off military aid to the generals. But it turned out Egypt has a large secular middle class who don’t want their kids to grow up with silly beards and burkhas, bless them, they took to the streets.
So long as the left continues to delude themselves that groups like MB are “moderate” and competent rulers, the disintegration of the ME will continue.
With exception of the dependent class and Marxists, who would openly admit that they voted for Obama? There goes any credibility this writer purports to have.
I think the point is that he voted for Obama because of idealistic reasons, and even he is starting to see the disaster that resulted from Obama’s policies, though he is still partially in denial.
“The only way that democracy is going to work in the middle east is to have it imposed from outside (Japan after WWII) or the model that Saudi Arabia (I know, Im surprised too) has started following.”
I’m not sure it works anywhere in dar al Islam. In the Western world, democracy emerged from an attack on the divine right of kings. A theocracy and a community based on individual empowerment are fundamentally incompatible.
A democracy is particularly problematic amongst Muslims, who regularly vote for insane people to lead and oppress them. Once elected, the jackboot never leaves voluntarily.
You lost me there. Is the author clueless?
Obama is succeeding. The author doesn’t understand the agenda.
what I’m curious about is how the dems will react when a conservative is elected and he cites obammy’s precedents to flout laws??
“Moderate Islamist” = Out of ammo.
And perhaps the job of the Author is to misdirect as part of the lefts plan to destroy and remake ‘Amerika into their image.
And, crucially, Saudi Arabia and several other gulf states are backing the Egyptian military and sending far more money than the total of US military aid.
Its really not democracy at all we should be promoting. We don't live in one (a democracy).
Its Liberty we should be supporting.
One generally flows from the other.
Do you actually need to read past this sentence?
Moderate Islamist Groups? Muslim Brotherhood?
Is he kidding or just stupid?
The stated goal of the Muslim Brotherhood is to create a Worldwide Caliphate and impose Shiriah Law on every living human being. This is "moderate"?
My best YouTube link for learning the truth about the Muslim Brotherhood:
There was a whole lot of getting the cart before the horse that died from Hillary beating it with her values of Democracy stick.
A few points to remember before engaging in future fiascoes: Islam is like old dynamite. Play with it at your own risk, and don’t feel betrayed when it blows up in your face.
Moderate is an overused, meaningless word, especially when used for wishful thinking, like applying it to Islam.
Democracy is mob rule. If you want good values out of it. You have to start by teaching those values to the mob. Good luck teaching values that have their roots in Christendom to Muslims.
The author is either a complete idiot or enemy agent. To characterize the Muslimbros as somehow “moderate” is like claiming their western mentors ,the national socialist party of Germany , were only “moderates”. The authors world view is insane. Or just plain stupid. Either way its amazing the editors of the Wall Street journal didn’t catch it.
Simple plans that pay no attention to truth and details always fail. The devil is in the details. Because ideology is supreme, Obama pays no attention to details or reality. His plans are based on how he wants the world to be, not how the world actually is.
Oh, he's still one of the worst presidents, but has been bumped to the No. 2 position by the "Fairy Prince", BHO.
With the exception of the quote above I agree 100% with your analysis. But I believe that it is Obama's support for the Muslim Brotherhood that is the driving force behind his Egyptian and Middle Eastern foreign policy. The common denominator is "Support the Muslim Brotherhood". Assume that and you can predict his actions perfectly.
He’s making excuses. He is not awakening to anything. He is and will remain in denial because his head is up his *ss.
or it doesn't, like in the case of pre-nazi germany.
Part of the problem is using the left's terminology. The founders of this country did not want democracy, they wanted Freedom and Liberty.
No,understating the threat of radical islam was not to “calm the public” but to win relection.
If the Muslim Brotherhood is moderate why did they assasinate Egyptian President Anwar Sadat?
Good point. Joseph Goebbels was a very wily mentor to these folks. You notice how many time the LEFT uses his name in relation to conservatives? They are obsessed with Nazi propaganda—but not for the reason they say.
The Left in the U.S. has never supported moderates - anywhere. They don’t even support moderates in this country - why would they do it in the ME?
Did Obama even once denounce Morsi’s increasing stranglehold on the government of Egypt? No, because he approved of it. Was he concerned that Morsi was not moderate? No!
The author is quite delusional about his pal and fellow traveler Obama. But it makes the Left feel better that somehow they are moderates and freedom lovers are extremists.
Obama, and the Clintons before him, had a clear plan for dealing with Islam. Let them form a Caliphate with strong institutions to control the small-scale bombers and rabble-rousers. Of course, this mega Islamic state would have nuclear weapons, but their “rational” leaders like Morsi would be “contained” with mutual assured destruction, just like we did with the Soviet Union for several decades.
I'm sure you are referring to a Middle East Only Caliphate. Take a look at the Muslim Brotherhood goals and you find that the Caliphate they are after includes you, me and every other human being on earth. They want us all to enjoy the emancipating joy of Shariah Law.
There are moderates and their strength is responsible for the downfall of the MB in Egypt.
For instance, Usama Bin Ladin was the well educated son of a still powerful construction group operating in western Saudi Arabia. His family was not radical and can be defined as moderate. They disowned him and kicked him out in the cold. They are an example of the many large and solid business families in Saudi Arabia who are definitely not radical and must be considered moderate. They are in the process of transforming the oil economy into one of manufacturing aand trade.
The Military, the military, the military....... All we hear about is the Egyptian military. The military works in tandem with a secular, ie moderate business leadership that controls the economy. The MB damaged the economy so the military was tasked with returning the country to the status quo favorable to business.
Although Qatar was dissed and has some radical elements, it is part of the Gulf Cooperation Council. They collectively are the strong economic force in the region. They need Egypt to shore up their western flank. They are accomplishing that goal. Ditto Syria. They will eventually prevail. The author refers to Saudi Arabia but means the GCC. The Saudi endeavor is in fact the totality of the GCC.
The moderates can not have the radical wackos in control because it is bad for business. Business trumps radical Islam
That is to say, business trumps radical Islam
wait.. hang on a sec...
there was an actual “strategy” involved here?
You mean, they had a plan?
I thought they were running around like blind mice trying to play off whatever was happening at the moment without any real sense
You say they are what they pretend to be. I say they are not.
They begat Usama bin Laden and countless other Islamic radicals. Nineteen of the twenty 9/11 bombers were Saudis. Much of the terror funding comes from the Saudis. Billionaire Saudi Prince Khalid al-Mansour got the otherwise unqualifed Barack Hussein Ubama into Harvard Law school.
They are the breeding ground of the vipers, and it's just a short journey. Islam is a conquest cult. Muhammad was a mass-murdering thief who encouraged his followers to engage mass-murdering theft.
That is the myth but simply no true.
Your take seems far more mythical... almost like it was paid for by the Saudis. How much are they paying you?
At 2% to 5%, they begin to proselytize other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups, often with major recruiting from the jails and among street gangs.
From 5% on, they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. For example, they will push for the introduction of halal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims They will increase pressure on supermarket chains to feature halal on their shelves along with threats for failure to comply. At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves (within their ghettos) under Sharia, the Islamic Law. The ultimate goal of Islamists is to establish Sharia law over the entire world.
When Muslims approach 10% of the population, they tend to increase lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions. In Paris, we are already seeing car-burnings. Any non-Muslim action offends Islam, and results in uprisings and threats, such as in Amsterdam , with opposition to Mohammed cartoons and films about Islam.
After reaching 20%, nations can expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad militia formations, sporadic killings, and the burnings of Christian churches and Jewish synagogues.
At 40%, nations experience widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks, and ongoing militia warfare.
From 60%, nations experience unfettered persecution of non-believers of all other religions (including non-conforming Muslims), sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon, and Jizya, the tax placed on infidels.
After 80%, expect daily intimidation and violent jihad, some State-run ethnic cleansing, and even some genocide, as these nations drive out the infidels, and move toward 100% Muslim, such as has been experienced and in some ways is on-going in Bangladesh Muslim 83%, Egypt Muslim 90%, Gaza Muslim 98.7%, Indonesia Muslim 86.1%, Iran Muslim 98%, Iraq Muslim 97%, Jordan Muslim 92%
100% will usher in the peace of Dar-es-Salaam the Islamic House of Peace. Here theres supposed to be peace, because everybody is a Muslim, the Madrasses are the only schools, and the Koran is the only word, such as in: Afghanistan Muslim 100%, Saudi Arabia Muslim 100%, Somalia Muslim 100%, Yemen ---Muslim 100%.
“The common denominator is “Support the Muslim Brotherhood”.”
That doesn’t explain his support of the regime in Iran when the huge protests hit the street.
1. Interfering in Iran is just way to big a deal for Obama. Too high risk. Way too high risk.
2. Despite the Sunni - Shia differences the Muslim Brotherhood is working to get cozy with Iran. If the Muslim Brotherhood wants to do so I don't expect Obama to interfere.
The U.S. would work with moderate Islamist groups like Turkey's AK Party and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood to make the Middle East more democratic.
