Religion is the godless spiritual philosophy or ideology that attempts to replace Almighty God and ETERNAL REALITY based on the fallen perception of an unregenerate man (John 3:3-7, Rom. 8:5-8, 1 Cor. 2:14). A man or peoples "religion" will NOT acknowledge the ETERNAL RIGHTNESS of the Person of Almighty God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and Their Saving propitiation found in the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:19-21, Rom. 1:18-32, 10:2-4).
Religion is the godless spiritual philosophy or ideology that attempts to replace Almighty God and ETERNAL REALITY based on the fallen perception of an unregenerate man.
A man's "religion" seeks to answer the basic needs of the human heart, which is the longing to fill an ETERNAL void that exists in the absence of a right relationship to its ETERNAL Creator in SPIRIT and TRUTH (Eccl 3:11, John 4:24). This godless spiritual ideology (i.e., religion) is prevalent throughout the multitudinous cultures and various societies of Adam's fallen race (Rom. 1:18-32). All human history attests to this fact throughout the last 4,200 years since the scattering of people over all the earth after the Tower of Babel that mankind would rather hold on to their fallen "spiritual" religious ideologies of godlessness than to adhere to the ETERNAL RIGHTEOUSNESS and ETERNAL REALITY of time and ETERNITY (John 3:19-21, Rom. 1:18-32, 10:2-4).
As humanity develops and out-works these ideologies and philosophies in time, the ETERNAL spiritual absolutes (truths) and natural (moral) laws of Almighty God never change, nor will they ever. That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation (Hebrews 6; 18a). For I am the LORD, I change not (Malachi 3:6a). My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips (Psalm 89:34). Almighty God and His Word can be totally relied upon.
For about 4,200 years since the Tower of Babel dispersion humanity has been out-working their godless, unrighteous spiritual ideologies and philosophies and have been reaping the horrific consequences ever since. .
In Romans 1:18-32 Almighty God tells us what happened after Babel and what were the end results thereof. Humanity had willingly chosen the abandonment of TRUTH and REALITY for a godless delusion and a lie. These offspring of Noah's sons had replaced and exchanged the RIGHTEOUSNESS of Almighty God with unrighteousness. For about 4,200 years since the Tower of Babel dispersion humanity has been out-working their godless, unrighteous spiritual ideologies and philosophies and have been reaping the horrific consequences ever since (Rom. 1:18-32). The consequences and end results of a godless existence are vanity and ETERNAL damnation (Eccl. 1:14; Rom. 3:23, Rev. 20:11-15). The REALITY of this life is that Almighty God sent His Son (John 3:16-17; Rom. 8:3-4) to redeem man and restore a right relationship between man and Himself (John 3:3-7, 16-17, 1 John 2:2, 4:10). That is ETERNAL REALITY and not some man made "religious" statement.
Almighty God's Word states;
God is a Spirit; and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6).
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth (John 17:17).
Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever (Psalm 119:160).
Do you know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? To know Him is to know REALITY. To know Him is to know Truth. May you be sure that your "ideology" and "REALITY" is rooted in the absolute REALITY of Almighty God and His never-changing Word. Your whole ETERNITY depends on it.
The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
Religion is what man invented to try to justify why he allowed himself to become alienated from his Creator.
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
My Pastor always says that the great thing about Christianity is that it is reality, not a religion. Obviously not everyone follows the same Pastor, but I always loved that saying.
“Religion is the godless spiritual philosophy or ideology that attempts to replace Almighty God and ETERNAL REALITY based on the fallen perception of an unregenerate man”.
religion: the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods.
English words have definitions and one cannot redefine them just to fit their whims. That’s why we have dictionaries, so we have a common understanding of the meaning and use of words.
The Scriptures and the dictionary often differ as Scriptures teach the truth of God in Christ Jesus. Is.44 teaches;
1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:
2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.
5 One shall say, I am the LORD’S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.
6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.
8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.
9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?
You beat me to it. :)
Wow, that's one of the most stupid things I've heard in a long time. The Bible is written in a language, the dictionary contains definitions for that language.
I will grant that there is linguistic drift, such that words can have their meanings change over time (ex. 'meek', which means something totally different today than when the King James bible was translated) but such is not the dictionary and the scripture differing so much as the languages differing (as the same could be said of any sufficiently drifted language items).
You are redefining the word, “religion”, into something not meant by the word.
Religion is the term to describe an individual or a group’s belief system. A Christian’s belief system is based on the idea of one triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And that God became man in His Son, who lived, suffered, died, and resurrected from the dead. That acceptance of Jesus as one’s Savior is the only way to eternal salvation (forgiveness of sin and reconciliation with God) to enter Heaven.
Other religious belief systems are also theistic, some polytheistic, some atheistic, etc.
I’ve heard the statement that Christianity is not a “religion”, but a “relationship” (with God through Christ). I understand that sentiment, but that is not the meaning of the word “religion”.
I do believe that Christianity’s view that we can actually have a personal relationship with God is a part of Christianity’s religious belief system. And, that aspect makes Christianity unique from other religions, but that doesn’t mean that Christianity is not a religion.
The Christian view is that all other religions are based on faulty or partial truth - that full truth is found in Jesus Christ alone. Christianity is an exclusive religion in that it teaches that only through Christ is there salvation and reconciliation with God. Some people do not like that and think it’s arrogant to believe that one has the only truth, but many other religions also believe that their religious beliefs are the only correct ones as well.
Ironically, those who believe that it is “wrong” to believe that one’s religious view is the only correct one are also believing that they are “correct” in their view that there isn’t only one correct truth and everyone else who disagrees with them is “wrong”.
Anyway, defining the word “religion” as a general ungodly act or thing is imparting a meaning that goes beyond its definition.
“English words have definitions and one cannot redefine them just to fit their whims. Thats why we have dictionaries, so we have a common understanding of the meaning and use of words.”
Biblical words have meanings and one cannot redefine them just to fit their whims. Thats why we have concordances, so we have a common understanding of the original meaning and use of the Greek and Hebrew words from God.
The English language is a very limited language and is constantly changing. God’s words never change. The old testament was originally written in Hebrew. The meaning of the Hebrew words is what is important, not the English (lost in translation) language. The new testament was written (inspired by God) by contemporaries of Jesus. The language of the day was Greek, one of, if not the most descriptive languages of all time. We don’t need to know Greek and Hebrew, but key English words should be checked in a concordance to be sure what the original meaning is.
It is the best we can do, it is the least we can do.
The post was in English about an English word and it’s meaning in the English language not Hebrew or Greek. It is therefore the use and meaning of an English word that is the point as the correct English definition is given.
“The Scriptures and the dictionary often differ as Scriptures teach the truth of God in Christ Jesus.”
Dictionaries are not produced to teach Scriptural truth but common language usage. If we don’t speak Hebrew or Greek we’ll have to use the language we do know, English in this case, and it’s meanings held in common.
The Scriptures in English by definition follow the English language as reflected in English dictionaries therefore your statement is pointless.
