Push to defund ObamaCare big test for DeMint at Heritage and rest of Republicans
FOX News ^ | Aug 24, 2013 | By Joseph Weber

South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint unexpectedly quit Congress this winter, saying essentially that he could better advance the conservative cause as president of the Heritage Foundation think tank than in Congress.

Roughly eight months later, DeMint has no doubt pressed Congress, and House Republicans in particular, to take a conservative stance on such issues as the Farm Bill and President Obama’s health care law.

Heritage and DeMint won at least a partial victory on the recent Farm Bill vote, getting the House to split funding for food stamps from the rest of the bill but saying more reform is needed on the billions being spent on crop subsidies and other programs. And votes of sequestration, the debt limit and immigration are also on the near horizon.

But DeMint’s biggest challenges to date appears to lie in the weeks ahead when Congress returns in two weeks to vote on a temporary spending bill, which DeMint hopes will not include money for ObamaCare.

“We know that ObamaCare is unfair,” DeMint has said repeatedly over the past few months, as dismantling the law has emerged as a primary focus. “It’s unaffordable, unworkable and very unpopular. And this might be our last chance to stop it. … This is an urgent matter.”

Democrats and Republicans will try to agree before Oct. 1 on the temporary spending bill that funds federal agencies, with the possibility of a government shutdown should the sides fail to reach a deal.

DeMint is trying to put the specter of a shutdown on Obama, saying the president will be to blame should he insist on keeping his “flawed law” on the negotiating table.

Others in the Tea Party movement such as Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul have said the GOP -- by controlling one-third of government with the...

I second that...God bless Jim DeMint and Heritage, and all those who are fighting for the Constitution. They need our prayers...group prayer does work.

If DeMint and the Repubs are serious about stopping ObamaCare, they better screaming about the new “30 hour full time week”, the 40% excise tax, the $2,000/employee penalty vs the $10-$15,000 insurance cost/employee, the unsecured database, the 16,000 IRS agents enforcing ObamaCare....

The list goes on. All I here is defund, but not why we need to defund. ObamaCare is target rich. DeMint et. al need to start bombing away. They ain't.

The Left doesn't have to wonder if their party will push ever harder for complete despotism.

OTOH, we are left to wonder if our nominal party will stand and fight against a law that is strangling our economy, stomping on freedom and is opposed by a majority of the people.

Is it reasonable to think the GOP will do what it has failed to do since the New Deal?

I want to win, not just fight battles. There are a lot of political veterans who think a government shutdown is the wrong approach. I’m not ready to denounce everyone of them simply because they don’t agree with the approach taken. The goal is smaller government.

I understand your conflicts, but if we don't take a serious stand, we're lost. Getting "concessions" from Dims is akin to working out a deal where thugs can rape your wife and oldest daughter if they only leave your youngest daughter alone.

Don't buy into the government shutdown meme. Obama and the Dims would be the ones shutting down the government if the House turns in a budget that takes care of necessities while withholding ObamaCare funding.

All the concessions/betrayals by the Republicans over the last few decades is what got government so bloated that it is a force for the People to fear - if we don't draw a line and refuse to back up any more. Civility and "concessions" will not do anything but allow the tyranny to continue. Those who oppose being rock solid are aiding and abetting the enemy.

HOORAY Jim DeMint! DEFUND/DISMANTLE socialist collectives, foreign and domestic.

Above all, if you wish to be strong, begin by rooting out every particle of socialism that may have crept into your legislation. This will be no light task. The Law - Bastiat
