Arkansas private school: ‘Staff is armed and trained’

In the wake of Arkansas’s decision to prevent school districts from proactively arming their teachers, a private school is taking the exact opposite approach.

The pastor of Arkansas Christian Academy in Bryant, Ark., has decided to advertise the fact that at any time, between one and seven school staff members are carrying guns.

“I just felt like with what’s going on in many of the public sectors where there seems to be a lot of shootings we need to take the same stance that we do in church on Sunday for our kids Monday through Friday,” said Perry Black, pastor of the school, in a statement.

Staff members began receiving training and permits to carry weapons earlier this year, in response to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Now, a sign outside Christian Academy stands as a warning to any would-be shooter.

“Staff is armed and trained. Any attempt to harm children will be met with deadly force,” reads the sign.

Administrators of public schools in Clarksville, Ark., had a similar idea, and began training and arming staff members earlier this summer. State Attorney General Dustin McDaniel came out against the plan, however, and a state regulatory agency nixed it entirely last week.

Black’s decision to arm teachers was praised by Republican gubernatorial candidate Curtis Coleman.

“I admire the school’s administrator, Perry Black, for recognizing that every moment counts when a gun-toting criminal intent on taking innocent lives is on campus,” he said in a statement.

Protecting your students from criminals is racist, sexist, and homophobic.

Would’ve preferred the sign display a pistol rather than a scoped rifle, but hey...the message is OUTFRIGGIN’ STANDING!

We’re lucky enough to have a parent willing to help us out. I’m not sure which of the other teachers carry, which is a good thing. If we don’t know, neither does any potential thug.

Our principal is amazing. She (and yes it’s a she), met with all of us after Sandy Hook and we set this up. Told us so long as we had our permits we were permitted to carry on school grounds and that was all she wanted to know about it.

Wonderful! I hope more schools learn from your example.

I agree that not knowing who is carrying is a good thing.

God bless you all!

Very cool! GOD’s Blessings on your principal and your school district and, most importantly, blessings on your CHILDREN.

Today we sold an old spiral staircase to a family who sends their kids to this school and attend the church. They seemed surprised that I had heard about the sign outside of town. LOVELY people, I’m glad they’re protected!

When we first moved to Oklahoma City our eldest child was just starting 1st grade. We bought our house in the Putnam City school district for two reasons. One was academic, the schools had pretty good standard test scores, good facilities, etc. But a major factor was that the school district has its own uniformed and armed police force.
