DETROIT (WWJ) – A local photographer is crying foul over an image that appears on a new set of public safety vehicles unveiled by the city.

Mayor Dave Bing handed over the keys to 15 new squad cars and 10 ambulances during a presentation downtown on Thursday.

Meantime, Bobby Alcott claims that a photo of the Detroit skyline featured on the vehicles is his under copyright — and that the Downtown Detroit Partnership did not purchase the image.

“I’m not trying to be mean about it. I’m not trying to be a jerk,” Bobby Alcott told WWJ Newsradio 950. ”I’m just saying it’s my property.

Property rights?? Detroit is controlled by Democrats. Everything belongs to them, not you. “You didn’t build that.”

He doesn’t have to sue Detroit. He sues the ad agency and graphic artist who stole the image. Image theft is rampant and should be stopped, just like the theft of any other property. Lawsuits are a good way to let it be known that no, you just can’t swipe a copyrighted image and make a profit from it anymore than you can publish someone else’s book under your own name and collect money for it.

Man, they find a way to screw *EVERYTHING* up. They can’t even buy new squad cars without violating the law.

This seems like a non-issue.

Evidently “his” photo was used in the mock-up ahead of time.

None of his work was used actual production.

See the article, about paragraph 5.

I have to spend 1000’s to protect my trademarks and am never compensated. This new America is filled with thieves and liars and a handshake means nothing anymore.

“Alcott later conceded the image on the cars was not his — they were only on the photo on the mock-up that was displayed before the cars went public.”

Never mind...

If the photo is his he has a point but he needs to provide the photo and prove his copywrite.

I think it's a dumb graphic to use on a police car. I prefer simple colors and an accurate label.

if he wanted to sue...he would win!

Actually he doesn't have much of a case. He admits that the photo used on the produced cars isn't his. The photo he claims is his was used on mock ups.

He should take them to small claims court and get his $1500 and go away.

Then there are the self-admitted facts:

A spokesperson for the Downtown Detroit Partnership denies they stole the image. And Alcott later conceded the image on the cars was not his — they were only on the photo on the mock-up that was displayed before the cars went public.

Actually they should thank the Detroit business community and leave it at that.
