An Ohio firearms instructor who accidentally shot one of his students this month also shot a 14-year-old girl in 1977.
According to the Columbus Dispatch, Terry Dunlap was a Pickerington Police Department auxiliary officer in 1977 when he accidentally shot a then-14-year-old Cathy Hessler in her right leg during a Halloween hayride.
Oh no, hes done it again, Hessler, now Cathy Schmelzer, 50, told the paper after she heard of the latest shooting. I said, Youve got to be kidding me! she said, according to the Dispatch.

But I thought people might miss the sarcasm and inundate me with posts telling me that he would NEVER be allowed to teach such a class ever again.
Apparently, second (and third?) chances are offered to some people.

I always told my students I've never had a negligent discharge, and fully intend never to do so. I gave them my word if they didn't just memorize and learn, but live the four rules, they'll never cause a firearms safety problem.
I believe that's the norm, not the exception.
Chaney was not responsible. The person hit with the pellets came in the field late unannounced and downfield of the party hunting birds over dogs. He was behind foliage and not wearing orange. The leader of this shooting party should have established better ground rules.
General rule of thumb. If the muzzle is not pointed at something you do not wish destroyed, then no one gets hurt.
I have seen a few accidental discharges. As the muzzles were always pointed in a safe direction there was no possibility of injury
