Why Won't Obama Visit North Dakota?
National Journal ^ | August 25, 2013 | Amy Harder

Posted on 08/26/2013 6:46:46 PM PDT by Hojczyk

DICKINSON, N.D.—North Dakota is like an overachieving child who attracts the attention of everyone—except Dad.

The oil boom taking over western North Dakota and transforming America's energy landscape has prompted visits from people around the world—Germany, Turkey, Japan, Dubai, and elsewhere—to see what they can learn and how they can benefit.

President Obama, however, has not visited the state since moving into the White House (although he did drop in twice during the 2008 presidential campaign).

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., has a goal to change that, and she asked Obama earlier this year if he would visit.

"He said he wouldn't come in the winter," Heitkamp told National Journal while driving outside of Dickinson, a town of about 20,000 people on the edge of the oil patch. "That's as much of a commitment—I think it's really important for him to take a look," said Heitkamp, changing her thought mid-sentence.

North Dakota is at the heart of America's oil and natural gas boom. The state, thanks to two deep underground shale-rock formations called Bakken and Three Forks, produced more than 800,000 barrels of oil a day in June, roughly 10 percent of the country's overall daily oil production and an all-time record for the state. North Dakota has surpassed both California and Alaska to become the second-highest oil-producing state in the country, behind Texas.

"He's got an incredibly busy travel schedule, and it's not something we've spoken about," Jewell said. "The president relies on me and other members of his Cabinet to be his eyes and ears on the ground where development is taking place."

Politicians don’t visit a state unless they can carry it. It is very simply a matter of using money for good effect.

They are better off going to a swing state.

It’s economics. All politicians do it.

Why Won't Obama Visit North Dakota?

Right, then, colour Me confused; is that a complaint of some sort or a proud proclamation of where they stand on boasting rights?

Nothing to do with Obama, but they ruined it when the made separate states out of the Dakota territory. If they had just made the territory one state, they’d not only have one of the biggest states in the union, they’d have the one with best name. You never hear anybody say they want to visit North Dakota. But if it was just Dakota, a lot more people would go just by the sound of the name. Just my worthless opinion.

Obama will only be the 12th sitting President to ever visit North Dakota. President Bush visited North Dakota in 2005 during his second term. Obama is visiting in the second term too. I guess second term Presidents visit North Dakota it seems.

These maps are deceiving. They should show the vote by county population. I suspect the blue counties are home to Fargo, Bismarck and Indian lands. With your vote spread only 60,000 votes and urban populations growing due to oil and gas, ND - as a state - will be voting liberal soon. It’s happening in conservative Texas today. Who woulda thunk?

Here in WA, Willard won the majority of the counties. But all he needed were the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Spokane. The rest of our votes collectively could not overcome that.

We must win over the cities en toto and to hell chasing after this race or that race

Please, please, please keep him away from my state. The majority of North Dakotans don’t want him here. Send him to Minnesota instead.

Between campaigning, vacations and golf, it's a wonder he has time to play basketball.

I think North Dakota is far, far better off NOT having obama and mooch visit. Presidential visits SUCK. His suck even worse.

By my calculations at 800000 barrels a day they are making $24 billion a year or more just on oil.

It’s staggering.

Well, he certainly doesn’t need to worry about freezing his nuts off, now does he?
