Posted on 08/26/2013 9:00:32 PM PDT by Errant
Syria is guilty of war crimes. According to the U.S., Israel and other Western nations, it was Syrian President Bashar al-Assed who was behind the chemical attack that left hundreds dead last week.
No matter, however. The die has been cast. There is a strong possibility that the Allies will respond, in force, in very short order.
The only possibility to avoid conflict at this point is that Russia, which has made its support of Syria’s government known, will somehow convince the west it is not in our interests (perhaps by threatening a full-scale confrontation, otherwise nothing else is going to work).
Thus, let us assume that the United States, Britain, et. al. initiate a missile strike on targets in Syria in coming days.
What will Assad do in response?
According to a report by Steve Watson at Prison Planet, he’ll immediately direct his military to strike targets in Israel, just like Saddam Hussein did in the first Gulf War.
But this time, the Israelis may not show the restraint they did in 1991.
It could be a game changer for the middle east… and the world:
A senior Syrian official has warned that Israel will come under fire should the United states pursue any military aggression against the Assad regime.
As reported by the Israeli news site Ynet, Halef al-Muftah, a leading member of the Syrian Baath national council, and a former aide to the Syrian media minister said today that the Syrian government has strategic weapons aimed at Israel.
Making the comments on an American Arabic radio station, Muftah added that Damascus views Israel as being behind the aggression and therefore will be retaliated against should the US strike Syria.
The official also stated that the Syrian government would not be beholden to threats from the US, and added If the US or Israel err through aggression and exploit the chemical issue, the region will go up in endless flames, affecting not only the areas security, but the worlds.
In the last 24 hours President Assad suggested in an interview on Russian television that he will not back down.
“Failure awaits the United States as in all previous wars it has unleashed, starting with Vietnam and up to the present day,” he told the pro-Kremlin Izvestia newspaper in an interview which the Russian daily said was conducted in Damascus.
There is a strong possibility that any military action taken by the U.S. and its allies will be met with a military response. And if this report is accurate, it means that those Russian supplied weapons that have never been seen in the middle east before will likely be used to strike U.S. naval targets, as well as the heart of Israel.
The game changer – the biggest variable in all of this – will be what Israel does in response.
In 1991, the Israelis did not respond to Saddam Hussein’s targeting of Jerusalem with SCUD missiles. By doing so, the alliance against Iraq, which ironically also included Syria, remained in tact.
Had the Israelis engaged Iraqi targets, it would have broken the alliance and possibly led to widespread confrontation in the middle east twenty years ago.
This time, however, is a different story. And Israel, which in May made the unilateral decision to destroy a Syrian weapons facility, may well return fire.
If they do, then the centuries-old conflict between the Arabs and Jews could potentially go into full swing, especially if Syria were to do something crazy like fire chemical or bio weapons, something Israelis now expect as they are distributing gas masks to their populace.
In response, we could well see a nuclear contingency plan initiated by the Israelis.
Folks, this has all the makings of the start of a World War.
One misstep here and this could very quickly spread throughout the middle east and beyond – a warning that Russia gave the U.S. just a few months ago.
There doesn’t need to be.
Armies are mobilizing, just as they did following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June of 1914.
By December of 1914 over a million people were dead and war lines spanning hundreds of miles were drawn across Europe.
It can happen fast. And this time it just might.
“Well, in that case, what the hell are we waiting for?” - Obama
Here is obama’s chance to get rid of that annoying little country once and for all.
. . . And I’m sure the historical significance of a gas attack on Israel will be lost on the obamites
They should strike Saudi Arabia instead.
They and Iran are the main outside players stirring up this civil war
It is called a two-fer.
"Our enemies are killing each other. QUICK...SOMEBODY STOP THEM!"
Don’t worry about Isreal.
Israel could take the US.
They are God’s people- we are not.
That would suit B. Hussein Obama just fine.
Here is what I know........
Syria will attack Israel and Israel will be defended by God Almighty......
it will not end well for Syria.
Nuclear weapons and Israel
Assad should know that obama doesn’t support Israel but he will use Israel as an excuse to destroy America.
Went and filled up my tank early this evening. I’ve got a feeling gas prices may go through the roof.
Barack Insane 0bama wants Al Qaeda to run Syria, just as he wanted the Muslim Brotherhood to run Egypt. How is this d!ckwad still in office? The SEALs need to pay a visit to the White House!
I wish we were privy to the overall plan. Some parts don’t make sense for now. I’m thinking world caliphate and a guaranteed promotion for Hussein is in the works.
They are likely one of, if not the, main conspirators.
Brilliant idea there, Ferret Face. Damascus is within artillery range of the Golan. The Israelis could shell all morning and then go home for lunch.
[I’m kidding, of course. The Israelis will do far worse than a little shelling.]
“Ferret Face” referred to Assad and not you, of course.
You might start quoting this section of the Book of Isaiah.
This message came to me concerning Damascus: Look, Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted. Sheep will graze in the streets and lie down unafraid. There will be no one to chase them away. The fortified cities of Israel will also be destroyed, and the power of Damascus will end. The few left in Aram will share the fate of Israels departed glory, says the Lord Almighty.
Considering that Damascus is one of the oldest, continually inhabited cities on the planet (dates back to 9600 BC) it is difficult to imagine the city not existing.
I think this is the preamble to the chapter where Damascus, just to name one, lays in radioactive ruin.
The Jews? Have thought up and completed tools for defense that no one else has even contemplated. Iran? Thinking they are smart ~using outdated Jewish nuclear technology from 80 years ago?
Poor misguided fools have no idea! They are threatening the worlds smartest people.
Why do you think Obama wants the Islamo-Nazi Muzzy Bros. to run the Mid-East? To destroy Israel!
Israel had nuclear technology in 1933??? Wow!
Likely Iran as well. I expect Israel to take heavy casualties. We may pay a heavy price for not coming to her aid. The Lord will come to Israel's aid in the final battle, when the remaining nations attack her yet again, IMO.
I personally hope this is just a minor event, and the Biblical battles many, many years in the future...
One can hope!
Do not these rumblings appear to constitute precursors to Armageddon?
From a post in 2002 (old news, even back then). Israel’s enemies should back off and settle down for more important reasons, though.
U.S. Air Force: Israel has 400 nukes, building naval force
Second, the Syrians know quite well that if we do anything, it's going to be a very limited strike that allows 0bama to claim "nobody crosses my red line." Some harmless thing will be worked out with Putin and the Syrians will be told when it's coming, how big it's going to be, and for just how long they have to hunker down. [Dictators all over the world, will, of course, be laughing up their sleeves at "the man with a spine of steelTM."]
Third, the Syrians also know that whatever they do to Israel is going to have far worse consequences for them than our "firing a $2 million missile to hit a camel in the butt in an empty $10 tent." They can huff-and-puff all they want but they have serious problems which will not be improved by having the Israelis to deal with.
This is stupid fear-mongering and that's all.
One thing about Damascus being situated in that valley with the surrounding high hills, it makes a particularly good target for a nuke, for a number of reasons.
Most people also missed old public news about Israel’s projects with several other powerful and advanced allies. Bad boys around the world would be making a big mistake by messing with Israel.
Then what are we gathering forces in the area for? It took GWB 10 years to get the UN's permission to attack Iraq. I've seen other reports mentioning a 7 day timeline. This isn't a scare tactic, IMO. It's not letting a crisis go to waste.
That said, I hope we don't attack.
The Syrians won’t attack Israel. They know what the response will be. Israel took out their nuclear facility in 2007 without suffering any response.
We don't need the UN to sanction a response. Clinton bypassed the UN when the NATO coalition launched an air war against Serbia. I expect a symbolic attack against some air fields and some command and control installations. We will do it with support from the UK and France, who are the ones pushing for a military response. More leading from behind.
*snicker* Let’s hope that Boy Assad doesn’t get a practical lesson in analytical geometry.
Yes he gets 2 for one. He bombs Syria and they take care of Israel for him.
Them Jews is smart! ;^)
Since you're reading the tea leaves of various "reports," consider this: the state run media outlets are reporting that "0bama didn't EXACTLY say the use of chemical weapons would be a bright red line." If the 0ne's state controlled media is issuing equivocations to allow wiggle room, including referencing statements that military action should "only come as a result of international cooperation" that sounds a lot to me like he's preparing to do pretty much nothing while pretending he's tough.
Attacking Israel would be self-destructive act for Assad
..pending U.N. “investigation” of the alleged Assad chem attack. Would the cannibal-rebels use chem against one of their own districts to cause U.S./Britain to take out Assad for them? YES!!
You didn't see me write that we did. 0bama is looking for a way to back off from his non-ultimatum ultimatum. The Security Council, is, I think, the likeliest excuse.
Clinton bypassed the UN when the NATO coalition launched an air war against Serbia.
After several months of European equivocation and demands by various European powers that we "lead."
I expect a symbolic attack against some air fields and some command and control installations.
As I think I wrote -- if anything -- yes, something symbolic. And Putin (which also means the Syrians) will be fully informed.
We will do it with support from the UK and France, who are the ones pushing for a military response.
Actually, I believe the Geneva convention requires an attack by all signatories in this case. But, I seem to recall the French saying that "one more refusal" to allow inspections in Iraq would have "the most serious consequences." I believe what the French had in mind was, in the event, less than serious.
More leading from behind.
I agree we should not be saying the things we're saying if we aren't going to do the things we say. But this war has no good outcome for us, so I'm not sure why we're saying anything at all.
In an earlier case you cited, we were maneuvered into "doing something" by a very concerted PR campaign [financed, interestingly, by the Saudis] which claimed ethnic cleansing, genocide, terroristic rape campaigns, and all manner of atrocities were being perpetrated by the Serbs. Most of the postmortem reports found both sides had committed similar atrocities, of similar degree, on similar scales. Again, a pointless intervention which had no good outcome for us, nor for Europe.
US will make legal case for striking Syria without UN approval
Sources tell ‘Post’ the United States is preparing justification for use of force against Syria with allies, which will circumvent Russia, China vows to block military intervention; military action possible in coming days.
But John Kerry seemed so sure...
"Nevertheless, the defense community, always aware that normal rules of logic dont always apply in the Middle East, is quietly factoring in the possibility of retribution attacks."
I think Assad's final option, and Iran's goal, is to unite both sides against Israel. In the end, it will be disastrous for all, maybe fatal for Damascus.
Warplanes and military transporters have begun arriving at Britain’s Akrotiri airbase on Cyprus, less than 100 miles from the Syrian coast, in a sign of increasing preparations for a military strike against the Assad regime in Syria.
“Two commercial pilots who regularly fly from Larnaca on Monday told the Guardian that they had seen C-130 transport planes from their cockpit windows as well as small formations of fighter jets on their radar screens, which they believe had flown from Europe.
Residents near the British airfield, a sovereign base since 1960, also say activity there has been much higher than normal over the past 48 hours.”
Don't give 0bama credit when he's only carrying out the plans of his handlers. He won't back off unless told to do so. Fear of complications by the group running the show, or exposure of their plans, is the only thing that will prevent an attack now.
Saudi Arabia is the main conspirator behind the downfall of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
Just so I understand the situation.
Syria used WMD’s (Chemical Weapons) that it got from Iraq (even though the Democrats and Media said Bush lied that Iraq had WND’s).
Obama says that Syria crossed a Red Line by using WMD’s (that it got from Iraq, but Obama said Iraq didn’t have WMD’s and “Bush’s War” was a War of choice even though Saddam used those same Chemical Weapons on his own people, like Assad just did with Saddam’s WMD’S).
I’m so confused. Sorry for the run on sentences.
