Expert: Syria’s Supersonic Yakhont and Iskandar Missiles Deterring US Naval Attack

“The supersonic and long-range anti-ship Yakhont missiles of the Syrian army and the Lebanese Hezbollah (resistance movement) are serious deterrents to a US naval attack by its warships in the Mediterranean Sea,” Dr. Mostafa Zahra, a military analyst and strategic studies expert, told FNA on Monday.

He said that Syria’s Iskandar high-precision ballistic missiles and its anti-ship Scud missiles will also target the US warships in case of a US naval invasion of Syria, reminding that the American military vessels are not equipped with any weapons system to intercept or divert the Syrian anti-ship missiles.

The P-800 Oniks, also known in export markets as Yakhont (in English means ruby or sapphire), is a Russian/Soviet supersonic anti-ship cruise missile developed by NPO Mashinostroyeniya as a ramjet version of P-80 Zubr. The missile has a range of 300 kilometers.

Development of Yakhont missiles officially started in 1983, and by 2001 allowed the launch of the missile from land, sea, air and submarines. The missile has the NATO reporting codename SS-N-26. It is reportedly a replacement for the P-270 Moskit, but possibly also for the P-700 Granit.

Earlier on Sunday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the United States against the ‘extremely dangerous consequences’ of military action against Syria.

Lavrov made the remarks during a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday.

"Sergei Lavrov drew attention to the extremely dangerous consequences of a possible new military intervention for the whole Middle East and North Africa region," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It added that Moscow was "deeply alarmed" by Washington’s statement about its readiness to intervene in Syria.

Foreign Minister Lavrov urged restraint during the conversation with John Kerry, the statement said.

If the ship were to park outside the range of the missiles and completely level Damascus, wouldn’t that be the end of it?

Would kill lots more than the gas attack.

Well, there's so much that he doesn't know, like that one of our ships could glaze over a small country.

Your post assumes that the USN will approach within the Syrian missile envelope, which they will not.

Also, if anyone unleashes the canned sunshine, all bets are off. The American public would demand full-scale retaliation, and Oshitbag would piss himself and cry.

I think it’s the British that are most likely to be hit.
Syria can rain down missiles on their base in Cyprus.

US hits Syria, Syria hits the base in Cyprus and Tel Aviv.
If Tel Aviv is hit with chems they nuke Damascus.
Russian subs then might strike our naval assets with Sunburns loaded with 200kt loads.

This is all way beyond the abilities of a mental midget like Obama...he won’t make proper decisions.

If this evolves into WW3 Russia has more throw weight than we do. they also have a civilian defense plan and we don’t.

First use of a nuke and the world changes. Most likely will begin with an Israeli counter attack.

In a WW3 situation carriers and the like mean very little to the outcome...they are all obsolete in a major conflict.
All that counts is mobile missile launchers, subs and civil preparedness.

EMP attack on our mainland would be one of the first things to happen.

I wish Ronald Reagan were in the white house instead of the Marxist Muslim brotherhood fool.

We have no carriers in theater so my guess is we will use B-1 bombers from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and B-2 from the states along with ships outside 500 miles. We will need to get tankers and support aircraft in place but that should b done tonight I suspect. If we do anything else it is purposeful to have losses in my view.

Today they said the objective is not regime change, so other than making the bully 0bama look like a tough guy, WTF is the objective?

To "punish" Assad for allegedly killing 'innocent' Syrian civilians, who, so I understand, were living in a staunchly pro-assad neighborhood of strategic importance to the "rebels", by killing more 'innocent' Syrian civilians, who are probably staunchly pro-Assad, who live in areas of strategic importance to the "rebels".

In this case, my enemy's enemy is still my enemy, so the best thing to do is sit back out of the way, relax, pop open a brewski, and fire up the popcorn popper.

It won’t be one ship, they will fire at everything. Loss of too many American lives for nothing.

This administration has so much unnecessary blood on its hands, it’s sad. These are our sons dying for tyrants for no real reason—except corporate profit!

Now we will be Al-Qaeda’s air force, fighting for the group that took responsibility for 9/11. I think our government is confused, or just a bunch of liars.

All this cheering on of war by chicken hawks like Sean Hannity...

Did you happen to catch Tuesday's O'Reilly Factor? O'Reilly said that America simply must strike Syria.

Then Col's Hunt and Peters came on and strongly disagreed with O'Reilly. The colonels were so firm and logical that I wouldn't be surprised if O'Reilly cans them both.

"Syria retaliates by sinking most of our ships. Obama only learned about it when he read the newspapers after his golf outing."

obama: Not to worry. We still have ships left and there's the Coast Guard.

It’s not trusted. However, they seem to get tips and agenda points from the east, Russia and China. If we do get into it with the east, I am sure the Ponzi Scheme that is Saudi Arabia will be wiped off the map

The 9K720 Iskander/ SS-26 Stone is a Russian mobile theater ballistic missile. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9K720_Iskander

. The Russians sold these to Syria just as they sold them the Bastion defense system and the Yakhont missiles.

The Tomahawk cruise missile has a range of 800 to 1550 miles. As long as our ships stay outside the range of the P-800, they are in no danger.

I didn't see that, but I am not surprised. There are some on the right (O'Reilly, Hannity, etc) that blow with a lot of bluster on military issues, but know next to nothing about them. Furthermore, they have never known the burden of military command, and what it means to lead people in harms way.

Was it Lt Col Ralph Peters (ret) on the show?

He is a good man....from his toes to his scalp.

Were such a thing to happen, it would likely be done by a select group of semi-anonymous insiders, as a “rogue” operation, leaving no trail behind. As is often the case, they would be doing so for their own reasons as well as to bias the outcome of the big picture.

I can imagine such an operation with 3-5 people, both Americans and some reliable Syrians. They would need the following information (all supposition, I have no insider information):

1) Location of the target on a given day and time, with intel from the NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) which is “open source” in the intelligence community. They could probably get “actuals” on distance, direction of travel and speed. Maybe even a satellite visual.

2) Location of stored weapons and a plan of how to steal them, transport to their firing point, set up and operate them. Also some distraction, like a car bomb, set off elsewhere.

3) Escape and evasion from Syrian response.

Yes, it was Lt Col Ralph Peters. He often appears on the show along with Col. Hunt. Sometimes they are the only adults on the show.

As an example of how clearly Peters thinks, here's part of Tuesday's conversation. I'm paraphrasing because I don't remember the exact words.

O'Reilly: We've got to support the rebels. It's like during World War II. We supported Stalin over Hitler because Hitler was worse.

Peters: No Bill, you're wrong. It's more like as if Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan got into a fight while they were both fighting us. Would we have come to the aid of either one of them? Of course not.

O'Reilly had no answer to that, so he just scowled and moved on to another topic.
