The sheltered existence of hundreds of desert tortoises will come to a sad and tragic end in early 2014.
A lack of funds at The Desert Tortoise Conservation Center, located outside Las Vegas, Nevada, will cause the sanctuary to close its doors and euthanize about half of its 1,400 tortoise residents, reports the Associated Press.
The facility was created in 1990 when the overdevelopmentnamely McMansions, solar plants, and strip mallsof the turtles' native habitats caused the critters to be put on the endangered species list.
The center previously upheld a $1 million annual budget, mostly fueled by "raking in funds from fees imposed on real estate developers who chose to build on the tortoises' habitats," reports the AP. But the housing market collapse in 2008 caused that fund pipeline to dry up. And, as a result, The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) simply can't allocate any more money for another year.

Sounds like the abortion argument.
“If we can’t keep them, they must be killed.”
That’s a lot of tortoise soup .... I guess Harry Reid can have a few of his fellow lawyers and crony capitalists over for supper.
Why euthanize them — start turning them loose — and then go find a real job.
For those unaware (most) the BLM claims that there is a disease spread by contact with the DTs. I once made a ranger blow a gasket asking him who these turtle touchers that searched endlessly running from one RARE (right) tortoise to another touching them inappropriately and giving them turtle herpes.
He was not amused. I laughed a lot. Many of us off roaders did.
THAT is why this favility exists. No joke.
Desert tortoises are an endangered species. I fail to see why they have to euthanize half of their stock. Why can’t they simply release them?
Trust us, we'll take care of you.
close its doors and euthanize about half of its 1,400 tortoise residents, reports the Associated Press.
They are desert tortoises, right? They can survive in the desert, right? Oh wait - I guess they are now dependent on gov’t handouts and can’t survive on their own anymore. Wonder how many of them are registered rats and voted for Dingy Harry?.
Tortoises live in small, well-defined ranges. Remove them from that range and release them somewhere else and they will spend the rest of their lives trying to find their way back to their home range. Letting these poor critters go is probably a death sentence, too.
It says something about half of them being sickly or old. This story is less than clear, but the only thing I can think of is they were injured or recovering at this place?
“I fail to see why they have to euthanize half of their stock. Why cant they simply release them?”
I think you missed the message. “If you don’t give us more funding, then we’ll kill the turtles.” It’s like saying, “If you don’t fund this (program, project, plan) then hundreds (thousands, millions) of CHILDREN will suffer and die.” (Not just die, but suffer and die.)
” mostly fueled by “raking in funds from fees imposed on real estate developers who chose to build on the tortoises’ habitats,”
So the solar farms are gone? Since these government approved rapists of the land, the solar and wind farms are still using the tortoises habitat let them pay for the facility. I find it incredible that the Eco Nazis go rabid over average Americans using the desert for recreation but it’s OK for “GREEN” businesses to rape the land and displace or destroy the wildlife.
Are the tortises nobama-minority and can’t survive on their own in the desert? DESERT tortises...DUH!
Once they are exposed to humans, they might get a bad disease.
Therefore they are ‘toxic’ and can’t go back into the wild.
Used to be a 20 THOUSAND dollar fine for picking one up.
Why cant they simply release them?
Could it be that they would be not endangered anymore and they could not be used as pawns by environmentalists?
You're next, America.
So there is NOWHERE in the vast unpopulated west to turn them loose?
Start killing the Ravens in the desert and the Desert Tortoise might stand a chance.
As it is now, the damnable Migratory Species Act protects the black bastards and they’re responsible for the wholesale slaughter of the tortoises in my neck of the woods.
Envirowhacko created conundrums...stupid.
They sound like self-righteous libs who believe the turtles can't survive without their care and good intentions.
Too used to government handouts to survive on their own.
Socialist Eco-cult melt down.
A familiar tragedy.
What will this mean for the end of food stamps?
Just a little preview of CommieCare. All these programs work the same way.
Someone in Ohio needs to contact Jack Hanna & show him this idiotic story.
Tortoises commonly carry salmonella, so it’s possible to transfer the disease from an infected animal to one that isn’t.
There was more to it. All of it having to do with power and money.
That particular dysfunction is easily cured, thus negating the need for million dollar dirt plots and the financial rape of businesses/land closure.
Oh, wait .... that would require effort.
They look almost just like Florida Gopher Tortoises which were nearly wiped out during the depression.
Tortoises make good pets. I had a pet Gopher tortoise when I was a small boy. It only took two or three days to train him to come out of his hole by placing green peas still in their shell right outside his entrance. After leaving the peas you blow in the hole and pat the ground then leave.
About the fourth time you stay, The tortoise will blow at you and try to make a weak looking attack then in a couple more days you can pick him up and play with him.
When you are tired of playing with him you put him back in his hole. He will then always come out when you blow and pat tho you need to always have some food for him.
I painted my initials on mine and many years later would still see him.
Just give the surplus away. They make good pets.

Soup? Soup is part of the entree. The article clearly said these are dessert tortoises.
Free turtle meat for food stamp recipients?
Back in the day, desert Turtles were pets of sorts. We had one “Touche” at our So Cal. Home in the mid to late 60’s. These suckers slow as they were could dig there way to freedom in no time, as did ours.
I had to take special training to deal with the possibility of meeting one of these things when I worked out at the Nevada Test Site. I knew guys who’d been there 20 years and had never seen one.
Is there anything the government can’t screw up? (No answer required)
I have a friend that has a bunch of them legally. She has 1/3 of an acre and it is almost all a turtle preserve. They are very cool. She had 6 or 7 but recently there were babies so no clue how many she has now.
When I am there I go feed them for her.
I feel a great disturbance in the Force.
Works great on kitchen sinks and countertops too!
There are thousands of tortoise caregivers who would be thrilled to have one. Putting them in the hands of private citizens, however, means the gov no longer has control. They MUST control all wildlife because humans are too destructive to care for animals. The sickness that is at the heart of massive, intrusive government is the real disease. Everyone and everything will suffer endlessly until the rape and plunder of government authority is ended.
