Shoppers go by 'honor system' at Wayne store that should have been locked

WAYNE - A group of young men dubbed "honest shoppers" have come forward after they walked into a Wayne store that was supposed to be closed, took what they needed and left money for their purchases.

Management at Buddy's Small Lots on Route 23 got a call from police that there had been a break-in at the store, but upon arrival, nothing was missing. The lock on the door had malfunctioned and the lights were still on, so the store looked open for business. Surveillance footage shows a group of bewildered shoppers entering the store and calling out for a clerk. After figuring out what they owed, they left the exact amount for the speaker cable and batteries they bought.

"Not only did they leave money on the counter, they counted out the change," store operations manager Marci Lederman says.

The four men are William Paterson University football players and have since been praised for their honesty. Kell'e Gallimore says he's surprised how quickly word has spread about the players' decision to act appropriately. "It was only…a cord for four dollars," he says. "I didn't think it was going to blow up to be this big."

Gallimore's partner-in-no-crime Thomas James wants others to learn from their choice. "All people are not thieves. You can't judge people by the way they look."

Buddy's manager came to the university to personally thank the players and give them a $50 shopping spree. Lederman believes they are role models.

The security issue has since been fixed at Buddy's Small Lots.

Thank goodness we live in a country where it is illegal to teach “Thou shalt not steal” and “Thou shalt not kill” in government schools or we’d have a lot more of this nonsense.

Um.. My thoughts would be the clerk is dead, injured or kidnapped and I would call the police, but these guys are praised because they didn)’t steal?

“let me guess...this was a group of bored AA youth”

Why does it matter?

I wondered if they counted the sales tax as well... they will surely hang if not.

The Manager hugs them, congratulates them, she can’t believe it! Because these guys look like trouble.

Get rid of the dread locks. Attempt to make yourself look less intimidating. These seem like good, honest guys, but I wouldn’t trust anyone coming in my direction that looks like that. At the end one of them says, “you shouldn’t judge people by how they look.” I disagree. You can and should judge people by how they look. Could save your life. Especially if you’re a “wood”.

You can bet I watch for golfers when I'm on a course. If I'm mistaken they will never know. If I'm a target there will be role reversal. One must be mindful of ones surroundings.

Thankfully I live in an area where small-time gardeners still put out tomatoes and corn and honey with a jar to put money in.

It is refreshing to see some people still trust others

At the end one of them says, “you shouldn’t judge people by how they look.”

I saw that and wondered why he said that. Is he saying that he thinks he looks like someone who wouldn't pay for his stuff? I make a good effort to present myself as someone who can be trusted.

Thank goodness we live in a country where it is illegal to teach “Thou shalt not steal” and “Thou shalt not kill” "Thou shalt not murder" in government schools or we’d have a lot more of this nonsense.

Check your bible for an asterisk next to the word kill. If your bible is of any quality, it should have the aforesaid asterisk.

Did not David slay (cause to become room temperature) Goliath?

A person KILLS his/her enemy. A person murders his/her wife, etc.
