Lehigh County commissioners who wanted to reconsider a controversial affordable housing grant Wednesday were stymied by the home rule charter.
Five commissioners intended to force another vote on a $750,000 grant to Cumberland Gardens, an affordable housing complex in South Allentown. The county contribution is a small slice of the $16.8 million cost to renovate 70 units, which is the second of three improvement phases.
The project is controversial for its per-unit pricetag, which breaks down to $240,000 each. The original vote Aug. 14 was 5-4 in favor of the grant and followed a lengthy debate.

Corruption at its worst.
The majority of the money will be raised through the sale of $11 million in low-income housing tax credits to a private investor. The Allentown Housing Authority will contribute $3.3 million, and Allentown is kicking in $400,000 in affordable housing funds......
In exchange for its $750,000 contribution, the county would have a hold on six units for county mental health clients for the next 30 years......
Sound like a lot of special interests being bought off. At taxpayer expense.
Corruption is the lifeblood of incumbency. The only cure is term limits—and a firing squad.
and a firing squad.
I’m going with the firing squad.
Term limits are not needed for honest inhabitants of public office.
Those who are dishonest can be run out or voted out.
I observed the ruling class for over 30 years. Good hearted, sincere people are converted into career politicians the moment they realize what their prime directive is: RE-ELECTION. It gets to them all in varying degrees. Re-election means you cater to your contributors—the deal is made with the devil. Incumbency IS the primary source of corruption in our entire system. Only Cincinnatus and George Washington can save our country now.
Career politicians will say or do ANYTHING to get re-elected. Term limits is one of the critical pieces—see Mark Levin’s new book. There is only one party in Washington—The Re-Election Party, and it’s killing us.
Sale of tax credits? Huh??
