FLINT, MI Some Kettering University students want to start a conversation about allowing the carrying of concealed firearms on campus.
And they've started a club to do it.
Kettering Students for Concealed Carry became an official university club Aug. 1, and members are taking the opportunity to get students talking.
"We believe that while college campuses are usually safer than other public places, we still think that anything can happen," said Kaity Huff, KSCC vice president. "Calling this a gun-free space won't stop a crazy person."
The group of roughly 20 active members out of the almost 900 students in their section wants to invite others to join the conversation.
A group of students has been discussing similar topics since 2011, but becoming an official club allows them to reach out to more students, club officials said. They want to dispel misconceptions about concealed carry in general and on college campuses, as well as promote conversation to change policy.
Changing policy is not to say that every student will be carrying a gun, however, Huff said. The goal is to allow those with concealed weapons permits to carry on campus, just like most public places.
Michigan law prohibits concealed carry weapons in all classrooms and dormitories. Kettering, like almost all colleges in Michigan except Michigan State University extends the ban to the entire campus.
"We recognize that university policy can't change overnight," Huff said. "We really want to promote discussion."
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, who is a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns which aims to prevent gun violence, said he agreed with the current university policy of prohibiting firearms.

I was there in 67 when the riots hit.
Our frat house was an old place located in a “bad” district.
My frat bros (who were mostly Ohio and Indiana farm boys) sprinted for home and came back with an arsenal that would have made Patton proud.
Well, but... Well, but... are college kids’ lives worth protecting? What a strange, radical idea!
I sense that their efforts are “pre-doomed”.
Doesnt Flint still have a socialist mayor etc.?
I’m not sure the mayor has any real say here. After all his city is open or concealed carry whether he likes it or not because state law overrides city ordinances.
At least we don’t have to worry about Flint going bankrupt.
Detroit bankruptcy won’t affect Flint, officials say
I grew up in Flint spending the first 20 years of life on Mackin Road.
I have seen recent photos of the house I grew up in....on a real estate site. a horrific experience.
Form the vast collection of photos Ive seen the city looks like it was victimized by the bubonic plague and nearly abandoned.
I wish “her “ well.
A few weeks back I drove past a house I lived in nearly 40 years ago in the sticks outside Munith and it looks almost exactly the same aside from a pole building out back and green trim around the winders.
It's had a socialist (or corrupt) mayor as long as I remember.
The house I grew up in was....at last look.... on sale for less than mt Dad paid for it in 1952! The house was not in the “ghetto”. Thats not a good sign for any CIty.
I remember driving past the DURANT HOTEL...during my last brief visit to Flint in 1989. The places was boarded up with a huge chain on the front door.
I no longer have relatives in the city so I wont ever have to go back for another visit.
I left flint in my early formative years prior to having developed any interest in or focus on things political.
“girls” and rock and roll were my major concerns at that time.
Those Hoosiers and we Buckeyes are like that. Don’t even try to intimidate us.
Go Green! Go White!
At least the home's still there.
when I was a Kid I could ride a bicycle from the westide to the far eastside of Flint ......Past the Buick Factory..day or night with no interference nor fear.
in fact I once rode both up and down Industrial...at night. This is not advised during the daytime these days.
