The Real Deal

August 31, 2013

Sometimes cleaning out Grandpa’s attic pays off. For an Ohio man, it paid off in the discovery of a more than 100-year-old set of mint-condition baseball cards. Appraisers placed the cards’ value at $3 million.

One key to the high value of those cards was the fact that they were well-preserved. But beyond that, the true worth of the cards rested in the fact that they were authentic. If they had been fakes or counterfeits—no matter how good they looked—they wouldn’t have been worth the cardboard they were printed on.

The apostle Paul had something similar to say about Christianity. He said that our faith would be completely worthless and counterfeit if Jesus’ resurrection were not the real deal. It took bravery and confidence in God’s plan for Paul to say, “If Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty” (1 Cor. 15:14) and “If Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!” (v.17).

The Christian faith rests on the authenticity of this story: Jesus died on the cross and was raised from the dead. Praise God for the clear evidence of Jesus’ death and resurrection (vv.3-8). It’s the real deal, and we can stake our eternity and our total dependence on God on its truth.

Lord, we’re eternally thankful for the truth
confirmed in Your Word and in our hearts that
You died and rose again for us. We love You, Lord,
and lift our voices in praise!
God is the only true God.

Read: 1 Corinthians 15:1-21

[Christ] rose again the third day . . . [and] was seen by over five hundred brethren. —1 Corinthians 15:4-6
Bible in a Year:
Psalms 132-134; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34

This weekend I’ll be covering Beethoven’s two Opus 14 sonatas. Both are dedicated to Baroness von Braun. As to whether she was a girlfriend or the wife of a wealthy patron, the biographies don’t record. After the Opus 13 Pathetique Sonata, Lou turned to something lighter, a trend he was to duplicate with his symphonies.

The first sonata in this opus, the Piano Sonata in E, Op. 14/1, is the first sonata of Beethoven’s that lacks a slow movement. In this three-movement piece, the middle movement is a minuet.

The first movement is a simple allegro in 4/4 time. The first subject is a beguiling singing tune that could pass for Schubert. It leads into a second subject in the expected key of B Major that dodges between bass and treble clefs. The exposition repeats.
At 3:56, it’s development time on the floor. Lou turns to A minor and C Major.
At 4:54, he completely re-composes his recapitulation by putting block chords in the right hand while the left plays arpeggios. His transition plays around with the concept of key to get his second subject in the correct key of E Major. He settles it down very quietly with utter serenity.

The second movement, the allegretto minuet, is in E minor and 3/4 time. It’s rather bleak, but the middle section is marked not “trio”, but “maggiore”. It’s in C Major and dispels the gloom. The opening returns, but drifts into a specially written coda that uses the middle section to gently lay it to rest in E minor.

The finale is a rondo in E Major, 2/2 time, with the direction allegro comodo. This direction does not refer either to a large lizard or a toilet, but means “comfortably fast”. Between episodes, you’ll hear that opening tune with the running notes a lot. The final statement of the theme puts the right hand on the off-beats, a favorite Beethoven trick, then puts the off-beats in the left hand. The end is simple and straightforward.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata in E, Op. 14/1
