MIT professor: global warming is a ‘religion’
The Daily Caller ^ | August 29, 2013 | Michael Bastasch

Throughout history, governments have twisted science to suit a political agenda. Global warming is no different, according to Dr. Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Global climate alarmism has been costly to society, and it has the potential to be vastly more costly. It has also been damaging to science, as scientists adjust both data and even theory to accommodate politically correct positions,” writes Lindzen in the fall 2013 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.

According to Lindzen, scientists make essentially “meaningless” claims about certain phenomenon. Activists for certain causes take up claims made by scientists and politicians respond to the alarmism spread by activists by doling out more research funding. — creating an “Iron Triangle” of poor incentives.

“How can one escape from the Iron Triangle when it produces flawed science that is immensely influential and is forcing catastrophic public policy?” Lindzen asks.

Dr. Lindzen has spoken out about this for many years. He was featured in the 2007 British documentary "The Great Global Warming Swindle."

Credentials:

He is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

However, in the past several months, two professors have been fired from universities in Australia for speaking out about the global warming fraud: Professors Bob Carter and Murry Salby, who questioned the severity of man’s influence on the climate. See the excellent presentation by Prof. Carter at this link:

Global warming is the geocentric solar system model of our age.

The Church of Global Climate Change bible:

In the beginning, nothing created the Heavens and the Earth. Then, coal and SUVs destroyed it. The End.

I will remember Global Warmists for about 3 more years.

1. For their passion.
2. For their desire to make the world a cooler place.
3. For wanting to harness the sun and for tilting at windmills.

After 3 more years all bets are off and no-one will care.

Global warming is perhaps a religion to low-information voters imo. For corrupt lawmakers it’s a way to justify earmark spending.

Both Lindzen and "missing heat travesty" Trenberth but their teeth analyzing weather around the same time in their careers. The diverged with Lindzen exploring weather dynamics producing climate in the 90's while Trenberth fell into the dismal swamp of mostly static climate modeling.

It is still an interesting and open question how weather patterns might change when the earth warms a bit from CO2. Weather patterns might not change much at all, they might become more benign or might become more amplified. Lindzen basically recognized that weather dictates the equator to pole heat transport and therefor the global average temperature.

Meanwhile Trenberth was looking at nuances within models like Pacific ocean cycles (ENSO and PDO). Decades later those simulations still stink. Almost a decade after Lindzen pointed out the critical role of poleward heat transport in determine global energy balance, Trenberth was writing navel-gazing papers that end with "Of course, changes in planetary waves and storm tracks make an enormous difference to the climate locally, so this conclusion is not intended to diminish the vital role of atmospheric dynamics. But it does mean that there are important constraints, as noted by Stone (1978), which helps provide some justification for simpler ‘‘energy balance’’ models of the climate system."

Hence the now very famous depictions of static energy balances determining the global temperature. It is BS because the earth would not have maintained a narrow range of temperature without the dynamics that Trenberth ignores. The energy balance cannot stop any positive or negative feedbacks from boiling or freezing the planet, only weather can do that. As Lindzen put it "...such warming as may arise from increasing greenhouse gases will be indistinguishable from the fluctuations in climate that occur naturally from processes internal to the climate system itself."

I believe I'd be happier with the term "cult," or better still, "Marxist cult."

People still want to believe in something. With organized western religions on the decline they have chosen another religion.
