Interesting that the homeowner left the house to call police. This could make sense if the homeowner did not know if there might be accomplices and there was no one else at home.

Journalism school would be a fun place to people-watch. Where else could a person write “shot the burglary in the chest” and get paid for it?

To judge by the quality of the "writing," I think we'd have to be awfully desperate for entertainment to want to watch purported "journalists."

Ayoob (I think) said that that was the best practice. Get the family out and into the car, drive a block or so away, THEN call the police, using your example of fear of accomplices. He said that when police approach a house in these situations, they have to assume ANYBODY there could be the bad guy, until they sort things out, and the last thing you want is to be seen moving about the house, whether you are holding a gun or not.
