Ohio Transplant Victim Says Hospital 'Wasted' Brother's Trashed Kidney
ABC News ^ | Aug 30, 2013 | Susan Donaldson James

An Ohio man who had his kidney surgically removed to save his sister's life, only to see it accidentally thrown out by a nurse, said he lay "in a lot of pain" unable to help.

His sister Sarah Fudacz thought she was being given the gift of life as hospital staff wheeled her into surgery last August at the University of Toledo Medical Center, she told "Good Morning America" today.

Instead, she woke up to a nightmare: A kidney that was a perfect match was in the trash.

"Somebody wasted part of my brother," Sarah Fudacz, who was 24 at the time, said.

"I knew something had gone wrong as soon as I was being led out of surgery, because I lifted up my shirt and there was no incision," she said today on her 25th birthday.

"I thought this was going to be the end of it and I'd finally start feeling better," she said. "I remember just asking over and over again, what happened?"

Paul Fudacz, 21, was also shocked to learn of the accident. "What really made it clear to me was seeing my sister walking around fine, and I'm laying in bed in a lot of pain."

The siblings, their parents and four other brothers and a sister have filed a lawsuit against the UTMC, which this week denied all allegations of medical negligence.

I had to have a partial kidney removal last year (I had stage III kidney cancer). My doctor recommended the Cleveland Clinic, and I couldn’t have been more impressed. They were extremely professional.

Let’s hope stories such as those in the OP are the exception, not the rule...

I think the lawsuit is baseless.

The hospital arranged for a replacement kidney.

So the girl got her kidney. The brother suffered the same amount of pain regardless of whether it was his kidney or not used.

The only person who has a case to sue is the person who would have received the replacement kidney if the brother’s kidney had not been thrown out.

It is lawsuit madness.

Furthermore, tort reform has not been touched by obamacare as the democrats have been bought and paid for by the trial lawyers.

The brother wasted a kidney for the trash can. I would like to hear the evidence in court.

The unfolding of events that led to an item as rare as a freshly donated, matched kidney ending up thrown in the trash by a nurse reveals a systemic failure of the criminal kind.

In a just world, the people responsible would be lined up against a wall, blindfolded and shot.

Recovery from that hurts, doesn't it? I accidentally turned one of my kidneys into kidney puree and it and my spleen had to be removed. Worst pain ever.

Hope you made/make a full recovery. Prayers up.

She wanted her brothers kidney for good reasons and did not get it. The brother now has to live with one kidney because of idiots in the hospital. They definitely have a lawsuit and should bring it

Would you like to live with one kidney for no good reason?

Not quite. The man donated his kidney to benefit his sister.
Who donates a kidney to be thrown in the trash. His health can falter later and for what? No good reason. The sister now has a kidney, but the perfect match is not there requiring how many more anti-rejection drugs? There has been harm done, just not as measurable as you would like.

First time in my life I'd been on morphine, which worked wonderfully! I was flying high and feeling no pain...for the first 2 days. Then they stopped it and gave me something milder. I was crying within hours, and I'm not one to cry casually. The good news is:

Hope you made/make a full recovery.

My last C/T scan showed no trace of cancer. I missed 7 months of work last year, but I'm now back full time.

Prayers up.

Thank you very much!

The people were on FOX this morning. This young woman did not get another kidney and the brother wanted to save her by giving his own compatible kidney.

They have every right to sue. He put his own life on the line and incompetence ruled they day!

Wow.

Message to self: do not elect james c bennet to anything, not even dog catcher.

I want the responsible parties to be held accountable, but I’m thinking that execution might be a tad extreme under the ciercumstances.

Ever think of reading the whole story before condemning people who file lawsuits?

The woman(sister) woke up without an incision,i.e. no transplant.

Someone in the operating room threw away her brother’s kidney.

MUCH harm was done through careless and inattentive medical staff.

There is no good reason for these things to happen.

As a matter of fact,it occurs to me that such events were rarer in old times before the “improvement” in hospitals that replaced 2 nurses and three aides in a ward with three nurses. None of the nurses want to give the common care like bedpans ,bed-making,fetching a glass of water, or taking a few minutes to listen. They are busy “professionals” more concerned with status and paperwork and gossipping at the nurse’s station.(I have been in hospital and had friends and relatives enough in hospital to have seen these things.)

Of course the government and insurance companies that are more interested in denying treatment or payment because some damned form has the wrong code are much of the problem.

For example, after being transported by ambulance following a head-on collision that destroyed both cars,I had the full attention of two hospital people at my emergency room bedside while they filled out forms but then only the briefest attention from a nurse and doctor for my injuries.Which due to the body’s shock did not really hurt until hours after a hasty discharge.

The shift in recruiting from emphasizing helping people to high salaries has not improved patient care. That applies to doctors ,nurses, and every one else in health care.Nor has the increased number of administrative staff.
