"Dunkin' Donuts recognizes the insensitivity of this spot and on behalf of our Thailand franchisee and our company, we apologize for any offense it caused," Karen Raskopf, chief communications officer for Dunkin' Brands, said in a statement provided to the Guardian. "We are working with our franchisee to immediately pull the television spot and to change the campaign."

The Thai franchise is not only standing behind its new ad; it said donut sales have increased by 50 per cent because of the ad. And, the report said, racial stereotypes in advertisements is common in Thailand. Not everybody in the world is paranoid about racism,
There is no greater crime than offending the perpetually offended.
“paranoid American thinking”...boy they have this right ! The Thais have little awareness of how ultra ‘sensitive ‘ the United Negro States of America have become . With Al Franken being a near resident of the White House guest rooms .
Kon Thai : enjoy your ‘charcoal donuts’ but then don’t forget to brush your teeth with your Darkie toothpaste
sorry , I meant Sharpton ( same smell)
This is how liberals waste our time. They repeat what the ad shows, there is no intelligent explanation of how this is offensive. The woman’s color matches the donut. Women wear bright lipstick.
"Time to make the racist donuts."
Well I’m offended that they apologized to the offended, looks like Dinky Donuts from here on...
Not at all. They need to protect their US market share, the black portion of which probably exceeds the entire Thai market by an order of magnitude. The point of advertising is to improve sales, not shrink them. No bedrock principle involved here.
Now, if HRW had said that the offending franchisee should be taken out back and garroted for his impertinence, obviously DD should tell HRW to take a hike. But this is just a matter of getting a branch to avoid torpedoing business at the head office. Is the HRW guy a publicity-seeking scumbag? Yes. But the cat is out of the bag. What shouldn't have been an issue could become one, and might be used as leverage in employment lawsuits in the US, as evidence of DD's "insensitivity" to members of the black community.
They are no longer going to refer to a particular specialty item as a ‘Donut Ho’.
The Thai population by in large has no concept of hypersensitivity to references to skin color. Thais openly discriminate due to skin color and think little of it. Skin lightening creams for women are advertised as a way to get a better job or attract that great guy. Neighboring Cambodians are of referred to as ‘daam’ meaning dark. The ad in question increase sales. The Thailand Dunkin Donut franchise is totally separate corporate entity from the parent company in the USA.
Things that happen like this in foreign countries should just be ignored.
The Thais do not understand that the professionally Racially Sensitives will remain racially sensitive as long as it is politically profitable to be racially sensitive.
Nobody was offended. Nobody in America even knew about this, much less be offended. It's just a bunch of liberals sniffing around looking for an opportunity to label an individual, a group or an organization 'racist' and make the case for their own existence.
Groveling and bowing down before the great god of PC.
Thailand has bigger problems to worry about. Like the invading masses of religion of peace warriors who bomb buildings and murder people.
I thought the ad was just fine, was not racist, and contained no racist stereotypes. Is it a racist stereotype to portray a “black” woman with dark skin? The American Dunkin Donuts headquarters is wrong to apologize for something that needs no apology.
Oh, it's just SO offensive! If she was made up in white, it would also be SO offensive! Actually, probably any color would be offensive, and exactly the same people would always be SO offended.
It gets tiresome.
