At vigil for murdered toddler, Mayor Mitch Landrieu describes 'a drumbeat of death'

In 1994, a 9-year-old boy living in New Orleans' Central City neighborhood wrote a letter to President Bill Clinton, saying that he did not feel safe: "I want you to stop the killing in the city. People is dead and I think that somebody might kill me." Two days later, on Mother's Day, that boy, James Darby, was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Darby's words rang out as loudly as ever on Friday evening in the neighborhood where he lived and died, when Mayor Mitch Landrieu told Darby's story to a large crowd in front of the home where another child, 1-year-old Londyn Samuels, was shot and killed Thursday night.

"This ... baby was taken from us. You can't ever replace that," Landrieu told the hushed crowd. "It's a drumbeat of death that is taking the precious from us."

Landrieu echoed statements he has made to President Barack Obama and on national news during the past two weeks, describing a culture of crime in New Orleans that he says constitutes a public health crisis. He listed the names of four children in the past four years who have died at the hands of gun violence in Central City.

"The reason we know it can stop is that it has not always been this way. This is not who we are as people," Landrieu said. "This is where we live, this is not where we are supposed to die."

It's a drumbeat of death that is taking the precious from us

It is not so much the drumbeat as the lyrics.

"The bitches and hos"

"Shoot dem muthahf***as!"

...and so on. It's the cultchah.

It’s interesting how the “drumbeat of death” can always be heard around the same group of people.

The “poverty is to blame” crowd can never come up with a legitimate answer why there are dirt poor whites in Appalachia and dirt poor Asians in Southeast Asia, yet no drumbeat of death.

The very same ones who tell everybody "Stop Snitchin'"

I admit I have never been to New Orleans.

OK.

But short of moving the crowd that terrorizes places like the French Quarter and the area around it you will never make the place safe.

Incidents like the assault on Allee Bautsch and Joe Brown are a good example. (several years ago)

That incident took place near Brennan’s Restaurant.

Thank you for admitting that you have no informed basis for what you are talking about. That takes honesty and courage.
There is no “downtown New Orleans”. Take a look at a map.
The French Quarter has a minuscule black population. There are blacks in almost every ward, so in order to accomplish what you suggest, the majority of the city would have to be depopulated. And the cattle cars should take between 250,000 to 500,000 people where? Will you build the concentration camps in Texas, or perhaps further away, say, in Wyoming?
Will your round-up include Stella Jones, the owner of an internationally famous art gmallery? What about all the black cooks who have made New Orleans one of the most important restaurant cities in the U.S.? How about the jazz musicians - you could start with the pianist Ellis Marsalis, the father of Wynton Marsalis, and work your way over to Fats Domino and the Neville Brothers - and don’t forget the clarinetist Dr Michael White, who teaches at Xavier University. Then there are the dozen or so brass bands, of older men who pass the traditional music onto the next generation. After the musicians, you can round up all the small business owners, then all the men who work on boats on the river and the ports, and the electricians, plumbers and carpenters.
Then you’ll have a nice, nearly-empty city - of course, there will be almost no services after you’ve made it schwartzer-rein - but I’m sure you have a solution for this.

New Orleans problems are deep, you described them well. Let me add a native’s POV.
There is a desperate mentality that prevails here. It goes across all races and cultures. It’s worse after Katrina because now everyone KNOWS how temporary life here is. Everyone is ‘live now, get what you want, the hell with the future’ because there is the realization that ONE more storm WILL end things.
It’s too old, too broken, too decayed. It can’t be fixed, nature is against New Orleans. Add the pervasive mindset that has survived from its piracy days to the illiteracy and thugs to the minority isolationist mentality of those who work and protect themselves as best they can, and you have a sense of the feeling here.
It’s a sense of doom, of everyone for themselves. The uptown elite think they are New Orleans with their galas and guarded mansions. The downtown criminals KNOW they are New Orleans and rule the streets with brutal, tribal mentality. Everyone else laughs at the delusions of the first group while trying to avoid the second.
Landrieu is a joke.
The city has the police force and the judicial system that the CRIMINAL CLASS MAJORITY has elected. Local tv has more commercials for lawyers and bail bondsmen than anything else.
This baby is dead because someone shot the woman carrying her in the back. I would wager intentionally. The perpetrators did not come from Mars- they came from black mothers who raised them with brutality and lack of all morals and feelings. Until that can be changed, the killing and crime will go on.

No matter how accomplished all those fine people you described are, the baggage that surrounds them is a killer for the city.

No thank you on Texas taking them. We got more than our share during Katrina, and most of them stayed in Houston. Brought their violence and criminal ways with them.

But many of the displaced do not like the way things are done here in Texas. The old tribal ways won’t work here.

So how would you organize your round up of blacks for transport, and how would you select who gets to stay and who is relocated to an “arbeit mach frei” camp?

God is still keeping the worst from happening, but nobody is believing it. Which fact ultimately actually works to get them to finally cast around desperately enough to find God once more.

When faith in a God of ironclad promises to rebuild returns, so will social confidence.

These senseless killings have been going on for years. Exactly why are guns available on the streets like toy squirt guns? Just where are all of these guns coming from? Are gangs selling them? With all of the corrupt cities that we have, it wouldn’t surprise me if gangsters were not getting guns from corrupt police and politicians. Something really, really smells about this whole thing!

Someone on televisions should do a montage of the funerals of these kids with the gangsta rap playing loud in the background.
