Hill briefing: Uphill battle for Obama on Syria
Politico ^ | September 1,2013 | SEUNG MIN KIM, AUSTIN WRIGHT and JONATHAN ALLEN

President Barack Obama faces a clear uphill battle in swaying skeptical lawmakers of the merits of military action in Syria, as top officials were dispatched to Capitol Hill Sunday to make the administration’s case.

For example, Senate Democratic aides are drafting new language for an authorization of military force in Syria, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said Sunday.

The administration’s proposal is too open-ended — a complaint many lawmakers have — Leahy said after leaving the classified briefing. The current version wouldn’t garner his support, but he indicated that a more tightly written draft might.

“I know it’s going to be amended in the Senate,” said Leahy, who is the longest-serving Democrat in the chamber.

Aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Foreign Relations Committee Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) are overseeing the revisions to the authorization of force measure, which seek to narrow the scope for any U.S. military mission in Syria, Democratic sources said.

It is unclear when the revised proposal will be released, or what reception it will get from the White House. Obama administration officials drafted their own resolution that was sent to Capitol Hill on Saturday without congressional input, and it was clear from the moment that it was unveiled that party leaders in both chambers would seek to change it.

Clearly the plan is to blame Congress, one way or the other.

He simply will be a bystander

We have seen this movie in reruns for five years now...

Who cares what the polis thinks?
Be interesting to see what Obama’s resolution says.
No “day of infamy” I’m sure.

He plans to blame Congress for not involving us in a fight where Michael Myers is duking it out with Leatherface? I say go ahead.

Any Congressman voting for a “limited strike” on Syria is essentially voting a declaration of war. The firing of cruise missiles and bombing a foreign country for any reason is an act of war. It very well may ignite a much wider and bloodier conflict. The United States cannot then simply walk away and claim to be an innocent bystander. Any member of Congress who votes to authorize must be held accountable.

The content of the resolution matters little.
0bama has the shite Midas touch.

0bama will ensure failure of the military operation.
The killing (??) of Bin Hidin succeeded only because Barry was left out of the loop

Yep. It is now clear this issue has turned from punishing Assad, to saving face for Obama and America’s image around the world.
Face saving is NO reason to exercise American Military Power.

And BTW, who gets to say it’s a limited strike?
What if Syria and Russia decide to exercise a limited strike back on us?
It does not become limited then. It becomes WW 3 and Dr. Strangelove
all over again.

Stop the insanity. Let Allah sort it out.

Exactly, once you launch that first missile, events are beyond your control. It won’t be our call as to whether or not the war will be “limited.”

Vietnam started out as a “limited war”. Next thing you know, 50000+ Americans were dead.

No money to keep the White House open to citizens, plenty of money for military strikes in support of AQ, golfing and vacations for the Obamas. Is that the case?

It’s the easy way out for Obongo. He reflexively ran to the defense of his Brotherhood friends and shot his mouth off about “crossing the line.”

Then reality set in, by way of Russia, China, Iran and Israel.

Suddenly things got a lot more complicated. A clean litle cruise missle/drone operation wasn’t going to be all that clean.

O’bigears was learning on the job again...”Oops...you mean if I hit Assad then it might spread to a bigger conflict with Russia, China and so on and so on.”

“That could mess with my tee times. Let’s consult with Congress”

Commie Staffer, “But Boss, We never do that!”

“I know, but then I can blame them either way it goes.”

Commie Staffer, “But Boss, What about your statement about crossing the line. If we don’t act, no one will take us seriously. We loose credibility as a world leader.”

BO, “Ain’t it nice how things work themselves out!”
