Longshore Union Quits the AFL-CIO

In a surprise move, the 40,000-member International Longshore and Warehouse Union announced its disaffiliation from the AFL-CIO yesterday. The news comes just a week before the federation is set to hold its national convention in Los Angeles, the nation’s biggest port and an ILWU stronghold..

The ILWU, known for its militant traditions and progressive politics, has been drawn into turf wars with other unions in recent years—particularly in the grain export terminals of the Pacific Northwest, where longshore workers have been locked in a high-stakes battle over master contract standards since 2011. - See more at: http://www.labornotes.org/2013/08/longshore-union-quits-afl-cio#sthash.WUvgy2OU.5GNjJk01.dpuf

Correct: The head of the AFL-CIO is RICHARD TRUMKA, not George.

Labor Notes is a leftwing publication along the lines of the old CPUSA newspaper “ Labor Today”. Lots of SEIU types writing for it. Suspect if you scratched deep enough, you’d find DSAers in it. Some names ring a red bell in my memory.

“So the AFL-CIO is not liberal enough for the Longshoremen?”

The same Longshoremen union in Long Beach that staged a 2-day strike because of the Iraq War. The same Iraq War that ended a year before. They’re most probably trying to money grab the union dues, that gets kicked up the AFL-CIO.

Wow, they announced this on Labor Day weekend? Isn’t that the unions most sacred holiday?

Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). An amalgam of former SDSers and their descendant New American Movement (plus other marxists who were not members of the Communist Party USA = CPUSA, or the Socialist Workers Party - SWP). When NAM fell apart in the late 1970’s, and the Weathermen were underground but with an above ground component, the Prairie Fire Organizing Committee, marxists decided to take over the old Socialist Party of Norman Thomas and the newer split-off, the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee of marxist Michael Harrington.

The result was a new organization, the DSA, with significant influence from CPUSA members who left the Party (such as Obama personal doctor and Obamacare creator, Dr. Quentin Young), from marxist academics such as Cloward and Piven, Saul Alinsky disciples (like Obama), some black marxists, and some Weathermen/SDS marxists who surfaced in the 1980s.

They remained in the background of American politics for a long time, but they operated like an underground fungus, spreading throughout the country, largely unnoticed by the political establishment. By then, they had gotten some of their members elected to local and state political positions, and then on to Congress.

With the decline in the old CPUSA, the DSA picked up the old reds and their kids, to give the DSA guidance from experienced, trained hands. Thus several DSAers (Young and ex-CPer Milton Cohen), were in Bill Ayer’s house (Weathermen) when they decided to give Alice Palmer’s Illinois State Senate seat election bid to Obama and the rest is history.

Progressives for Obama was a major DSA operation, and included Mr. Hanoi Tom Hayden, SDSer Marilyn Katz, and Maoist/SDSer Carl Oglesby.

Look up these organizations names at www.keywiki.org and www.DiscoverTheNetwork.com, and you will find out all about them from two very good databases.

You nailed Trumka perfectly. He comes from the UMW, which has always had a tradition of violence in their strikes. Coal miners are hard men doing a hard job, and they’ve used hard tactics to get their way in the past (on both sides). There’s been a fair bit of blood shed in the PA/WV/VA/KY coalfields under Trumka’s watch from 1982 to 1995.

Colonet is a small Mexican Pacific coastal village located approximately 150 miles south of Tijuana in Baja California. Historically, this area’s economy has relied on agriculture and tourism. For the past five years, excitement and speculation has centered on Punta Colonet, as the Mexican government has announced that it will build a new Pacific seaport at this site.

The scope of the project is enormous by world standards. According to Mexican government reports, the port will be designed to handle six million containers annually at final build-out. In terms of processing volume, it will be larger than the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach combined. When completed, the site is projected to encompass an area of more than 27,000 acres, or slightly more than 42 square miles. It will be the third largest seaport in the world, behind only Singapore and Hong Kong. It is estimated that between 90,000 and 200,000 people, a small city, will be needed to operate the port facilities.

..................

I thought this port was going to be further south with rail and Hiway connections up through Texas into the heartland and points east.

Trumka is a real, bonefide terrorist by today’s standards. The UMWA strike in southwest Virgina was a real terrorist action.

The ILWU supports a national single-payer health care system, while the AFL-CIO is “in lockstep with Obama,” Sundet said. He criticized the federation for being unwilling to discuss the shortcomings of the Affordable Care Act, which discriminates against union Taft-Hartley benefit plans and will impose a so-called “Cadillac tax” on generous benefit plans.

How can they be for a single payer plan and still want to keep their 'Cadillac' benefit plan?

Oh yeah, its like clockwork. I knew people that were in other unions, that were smaller and at least a little more responsible (laborers, electricians, etc), that hated the ILWU, because they felt they gave unions a bad name. Not that I’m a fan of ANY union, but when the other unions think you are jerks, thats saying something.

Dont know where you are now, but if you’re like me, the only thing you miss from SoCal is the weather and really, really good Mexican food. I grew up in Carson, right next to Long Beach.
