RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- The National Security Agency's spy program targeted the communications of the Brazilian and Mexican presidents, and in the case of Mexico's leader accessed the content of emails before he was elected, the U.S. journalist who obtained secret documents from NSA leaker Edward Snowden said Sunday.

This Snowden stuff just makes me very suspicious.
This guy was able to pull this off and the United States, with all of its power and connections could not put this guy in jail?
I’m calling Bull. There’s more to this. Snowden is discrediting and pissing off every single country at The United States.
The result will be that we will lose respect and standing in the world. JUST what Obama wants.
In addition to that, at some point the U.N. will make hay of it and the United States will be told it is out of control, etc and that we need some sort of monitors, etc.

But when it’s put out in public.. it has a very negative impact.

I’m not concerned about the NSA targeting communications of foreign leaders.
But I am very concerned about them spying on American citizens. I’m even more concerned about losing our democracy because a leader in chief can spy on Congress, Americans, reporters, etc for political reasons.. As Huckabee said this destroys our democracy.

Exactly right. NSA has the mission of spying on everyone but Americans. Their lying about spying on Americans - either directly, or indirectly through “agreements” with other countries is particularly disturbing.
What this will do is galvanize countries to control their own communications infrastructure. Smart ones will do just that. Things will be less interconnected, and US firms will lose business as it becomes clear they are for the most part paid informants to the NSA.
I have to believe that some of the largest internet companies, and indeed, the growth strategy and architecture of the internet itself was directed to benefit surveillance.
Government can never control itself, and never will.
So to add to your point, yes, I’m very concerned about the spying on American citizens. I’m more concerned with how they were comfortable lying about it. I’m even further concerned by the lack of consequences for their admitted lying about it.
Why is Clapper not behind bars, for instance?
No doubt, NSA is involved in political activities. No doubt they have the ability to impact politics - and since government cannot restrain itself, no doubt they’ve used it.
So who goes to jail for this?
If it’s true our military spied on leaders of Brazil and Mexico, good, I’m glad they did. I’d expect nothing less.
Well, a smart phone can be a bug if its firmware has been altered.
The government has access to the source code for cellphones and smart phones...this is certain. The reason it is certain is that you must have that source code to modify a smart phone to add ECC/AES public key encryption abilities to the phone. With that level of encryption the phone becomes as secure as the older STU3 secure phones. You see government officials using smart phones all the time, even the president has one. These phones are secure.
Another thing you can do with access to the source code is operate a smart phone out-of-band. An encrypted smartphone moved out of the cellular bands becomes an instant satellite phone that can operate using the array of NRO satellites.
A smartphone is an incredibly complex and powerful device.
It is a combination of a powerful ARM based computer linked to a software defined transceiver with audio, video and data functions.

Brazil has been run by Marxists since Lula was elected years ago (and his successor is one too).
Everyone has wondered if he was giving aid to Venezuela and the FARC in Colombia. Perhaps the NSA can tell us if this was so.
