Gresham bakery that denied same-sex wedding cake closes
http://www.kgw.com ^ | september 1, 2013 | Evan Sernoffsky

A Gresham bakery that refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, prompting a state investigation, shut its doors.

On Sunday, KGW stopped by Sweet Cakes by Melissa and found the bakery completely empty. All counter tops, display cases and decorations were gone.

Hanging in the window was a sign from the Oregon Family Council that read "Religious freedom is under attack in Gresham."

As first reported in Willamette Week, Sweet Cakes by Melissa posted on its Facebook page, “This will be our last weekend at the shop we are moving our business to an in home bakery. I will post our new number soon.”

In January, Laurel Bowman said Sweet Cakes by Melissa refused to sell her a cake after learning it would be for a same-sex wedding.

So now they won´t pay taxes for cakes sold to the city, they won´t have any employees. This goes against the grain of getting everyone back to work in America. I wonder if the guy in the WH has any clue of how this all works. I´d say that there could be TWO cake bakeries in Gresham, ONE for the same sex people, and one who didn´t want to bake cakes for the same. LET FREEDOM RING:

Man, would you eat food that was provided under duress?

"Here's your cake. Keep in mind that I didn't particularly care for you to begin with, then you forced me to incur substantial legal bills, then tried to drive my family out of the business we've held for years, for no other reason than 'you could'. As a result of your actions, my family and I have suffered needless verbal abuse and physical threats from you, and hundreds of people just like you.

So......Bon Appetit!"

I'd not want to be within 100 yards of anything provided in a situation like that.

we have a bakery like this in our little city...

the guy renovated his garage into a kitchen, he has no store but supplies bread to various local stores and markets. It is the best bread you can get in town. His raisin bread makes the best french toast. And the biscotti are excellent.

It can be done, my guess is that they will do something like this, but will no longer take any orders, eliminating the sodomite problem.

Good for them..they refused to compromise...better to lose your business than your soul

This isn’t right. They should not have been forced to do this. Reading this today before coffee, but this makes me angry. More people need to take a stand against this. Religious beliefs are grounds enough to refuse service to a customer without penalty of (gasp) discrimination. I guess nothing will happen until they try this at a Muslim establishment.

True but you can probably figure a person involved in such a ‘controversy’ would be recording and if he/she stubbed their toe on the way out the door, in todays idiotic mood, you would be charged with (and from the sounds of this) and possibly convicted of causing the stub - at least of creating a situation that made ‘them’ nervous and ‘their’ toe was stubbed because of it.

It is this type mindset that ‘forces’ businesses to charge up front....A fast food joint doesn’t hand over the food until the money (or payment) is in THEIR possession.

Money first. We will worry about the quality later....

Granted you willingly walk into a MacDs and you ‘know’ the rules but imagine if your local Asphalt Driveway Contractor charged 100% BEFORE he started work?
Naturally it is your choice not to use him and the way things are going if you wanted ‘him’ to do your driveway all you would have to do is sue if you felt you didn’t ‘need’ to pay him upfront....AND probably win..

“”The truth be known, this is not about gays it is liberalism/pc gone postal.”

I agree entirely. This is about government control, and intolerance by liberals. I would not support a bakery that said it would not sell to gays, as a general measure. That would be discriminatory and way too diffuse and interpretable. However, forcing that bakery to make a cake specifically for a gay wedding forces the bakery owners to participate in an activity that is contrary to their specific religious beliefs. That crosses the line of individual choice and religious liberty.

That said, I would have no problem with a bakery that would not sell wedding cakes to non-gays. That's their right.

Let’s see: Jefferson wrote a letter stating that government cannot force your opinion, but only your behavior. Which the USSC then uses to hang its hat on dooming the Freedom of Thought ensconced in the Bill of Rights.

This letter isn’t part of our contract, the Constitution. Nor was it a part of the debates about the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. Yet, it forms the basis for the ruling.

Christ says that we are to behave as we believe. Jefferson isn’t the kind of Christian I’d want defending my beliefs. I’ll go with Jesus on this one.

Next comes the modern day where the curse of that 19th century ruling comes home to roost, mingled with a heavy dose of anti-commerce socialism. You can, as an individual believe what you want, but if you practice it you’ll suffer government sanction. If you’re a business practice you cannot even believe as you want, but must bow down to the new state religion of secularism.

There are 5 rules for good laws and they’ve been violated too many times. I suspect it’s time for a reset.

Even if they were forced to bake the cake and delivered it that couple would have found something wrong with it and sued the bakery. They could have even sabotaged the cake and claimed it was the bakery.

There mistake is Lefty Heaven Oregon was giving the reason WHY they wouldn’t make said cake and knowing it was against the law to do so. A simple “we are sold out” during that time frame would have sufficed, along with a suggestion of another bakery that may be available. They will still have to abide by the draconian pro-gay anti-business rules even if they work from a home business, so they best beware.

For normal, sane people yes. Remember we are talking about gays who are already mentally ill. Do you think they will catch that? They think they’ve “won” something so much so they will eat a cake full of negativity and not know the difference.

Good thing I frosted it with spray paint

As I learned from my mother, when the massive sheet caked she had just baked for a friend's 50th anniversary party came out in 6 jagged pieces.... "Frosting covers up a world of sin!". I also learned a number of new words that I'll not share here on the thread.

The cake was delicious. No one had a clue what it looked like coming out of the oven.

It does not have to be a “Christian” baker they offend. Could be any Bubba Redneck that just does not like queers. See my point?

re: “Americans have the right to freely exercise their religion. Forcing neutral exercise of religion or forcing liberal exercise of religion is NOT free exercise of religion.”

You are correct, but here’s the thing. The Courts have redefined “religious freedom” in the First Amendment as only applying to churches (for now). They have denied that individuals and their businesses have the right to religious freedom.

Therefore you, as an individual, may not appeal to your personal religious convictions to oppose doing business with someone who supports or represents something you disagree with for religious reasons. According to the Courts, once you do business with the general public, you have abdicated your right to religious freedom in the marketplace.

Somehow, if your business sells to the general public, you must now do business with whomever walks through the door. All of this goes back, of course to the anti-discrimination laws.

Once you give one particular group a special protected status, then there are going to be more and more of these groups added to the list. First is was about racial discrimination, then gender, and now same-sex marriage. Once the government got into defining special classes of people for protection, now we’ve got what we’ve got.

And churches are not far behind. If a church rents its buildings or facilities to anyone other than church members, they too will be open to charges of discriminating against gays if they refuse to rent to them.

With the exception of Seattle and San Francisco, no other city on the West Coast caters to the fags as bad as a Portland. For those that are not familiar with Gresham, it’s a suberb of Portland, Oregon, aka Sodom, as I like to call it.
