Speaking to the BBC's Jeremy Bowen, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said terrorism would flourish everywhere if the US attacked Syria

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also told the BBC that armed groups backed by America - not Syrian troops - had used chemical weapons.

The US says it has evidence that Damascus used the nerve agent sarin in a deadly attack in August

Mr Mekdad told the BBC's Jeremy Bowen in Damascus: "Any attack against Syria is support for al-Qaeda and its affiliates, whether Jabat al-Nusra or the State of Islam in Syria and Iraq."

Jabat al-Nusra and other groups linked to al-Qaeda have come to play a significant role in the fight against President Assad's government.

The real question is who really used the chemical weapons -- ask who benefits, it certainly not the Syrian government. They may be "evil", but I don't think they are stupid. On the other hand, I can certainly believe that Al Qaeda is willing to kill their own people or innocent people to achieve their objectives - to goad the US into this war on the side of Al Qaeda.

Any American “limited strike” is a declaration of war and will involve the US in a much wider bloody conflict. Iran and Syria have said they will attack Israel if the US intervenes. Also it is not for nothing that Iran has been aiding Syria. Hidden in all that aid the Iranians have positioned state of the art short range missile manned by Revolutionary Guards at forward Syrian locations. Check! Until those batteries are pinpoint located and destroyed they are a grave threat to Israel especially if Israel decides it is necessary to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. Obama and Kerry are in way over their heads.
