UK media, NOT U.S. National Media. Imagine that one, eh?
Every time I read one of these articles about a college student (usually male) being murdered it just strikes at my heart. It’s usually associated with a night of revelry. Parents, warn your college aged sons and daughters about the dangers of drinking too much in public places.
This is not to say that this young man was drunk, but that is often the case. So much promise, all for nothing. Pray for his parents. They’ll never get over this.
Sounds like some roughnecks brought in to work in the gas fracking fields around here. The college boy probably got drunk and began talking some smack and got more than he bargained for.
Alcohol + Testosterone is a deadly combination.
Too bad Old Sparky at the Moundsville State Penitentiary isn’t still running. Seems like a perfect solution to this type of problem. By the way, the Moundsville State Pen has really interesting tours.
Maybe that's the way it went down, and maybe it wasn't.
In either case let's be careful not to blame the victim. He was murdered.
Truer words...note, also, all of the young college men lost in the rivers in the midwest after a night of drinking over the past few years.
I would say the attackers - who were oil field workers - probably accused the guys of being gay or harassed them in some way and then when one of the students responded, they got mad and pounded him into the ground. I don’t think the students were gay, btw, simply that there is always a big town-gown conflict in areas like this and the oil workers were probably looking to pick a fight and just called out some insults at random. And without a doubt, alcohol was involved.
But there is no way this is the victim’s fault. I’m glad the attackers were caught.
So that's an excuse for murder?
Sons Of Barack’S!
Color me surprised.
I wonder if this wasn’t one of those fall and hit your head type of deaths, as opposed to a full on beat down.
Doesn’t change the outcome, but it does help rationalize it.
The surviving victim, who has not been named, described the attackers as three or four white men in their mid-20s.
Not an excuse for murder. But would not be the first bar fight where somebody ended up dead. (I knew a guy who was tried and acquitted for manslaughter after the guy he was in a bar fight with flew back and hit his head on a curb and died of a cerebral hemorrhage)
I graduated from this school back in ‘71 and knew those streets around the college quite well - and often quite drunk, to be honest. It was always reasonably safe in that area, although parts of Wheeling are very rough. The city was always known for illegal bars, gambling and whore houses, but not this area.
Though it does look like these two lied in wait for him and jumped him. So yeah, premeditated murder.

You need to work on your “jumping to conclusions without reading the article skills” for some FR threads.
